I've seeing exactly as Athenor describes above on the main forum page. If I click on any of the subforum links, I'm logged in when it takes me there.

    Chrome in Win7.

Same. That happens on Firefox on Windows 7 and on Safari on iOS 12.

Wow. I had the weirdest bug right now, where the "sign-in" popup didn't format properly and I couldn't see the fields for username or password. I tried manually entering them using keyboard commands, and got taken to the new user signup page. I cancelled that and was then logged in.

I didn't capture a picture. If I see it again, I'll attach it to this.

Edit: That was easy to recreate. I closed the tab and re-opened it, and it showed me as logged off and had the same broken popup.

Private browsing window seems unaffected (Which is where I'm posting this from).

A refresh and a ctrl+f5 refresh on the normal browsing session does not help. A reload right now brought me to the page as if I was logged in.

I'm getting this too (Win 10, Chrome). I get logged out and can't get to the login popup. Not consistently though. sometimes it's fine, sometimes not.
It's usually happening on the main page and has me logged in when I got to a sub-page, but not always.
Either way, just navigating around seems to fix it after one or two tries.

I got that, but noticed Chrome said "not secure" up in the URL box. For some reason I'd gotten the unsecured HTTP page, instead of the HTTPS one. Once I retyped the URL as "https://forums.penny-arcade.com" everything worked fine.

We've been in the process of switching up our DNS, so it might be that process causing the issue.

    It's not DNS
    It's always DNS.

That said, it's been 4 days and I'm still seeing the issue. Typically DNS takes 48 hours to propagate, so it might not actually be DNS.

    (it's probably still DNS somehow)

Now it seems to be happening a lot more often?

This has been happening to me for a little while, but the frequency does seem to have increased.
It happens both at home (Windows 10, Waterfox), and at work (Windows 10, Chrome) almost every time I visit the site (minutes or hours apart).

The workaround I've figured is that if I click "Register" it immediately recognized I should be logged in and I'm all good from there. No idea if that's helpful from a debug perspective, but it's much easier than trying a bunch of refreshes or tabbing through invisible text fields.

Yep, click register, click on your portrait, then into the forum from the top left.

It seems to be an http/https issue. Going to just forums.penny-arcade.com shows me as not logged in, and the Sign In link produces the tiny, unusable sign in box. https://forums.penny-arcade.com shows me as logged in, and the Sign In link produces a usuable sign in window. Since all the links on the main page are https links, starting as not logged in from the non-https main page and clicking any of them switches me to logged in.

this is happening to me a lot.

If you click sign in and the little box comes up, hit return (assuming your creds are saved) and then clicking on any link it remembers you are signed in.

It seems to be an http/https issue.

Yup, I believe this is exactly what it is.

The non-secure version of the main landing page doesn't redirect to the secure version but all other links seem to redirect which is why clicking a link (any link) logs you in.

    *Edit*
Hmm, not, that's not entirely true either. Sometimes it redirects, but not always.

The forum button the main page is sending me to http instead of https pretty consistently. When this occurs, I get logged out on the main forum page. If I click on anything, it brings me back to https and I get logged in again. Or I can change to https by hand and be logged in again. I'm not sure why the forum link is sending me to http though.

Yep! If I change http to https, I get logged in again. Or if I choose an actual forum, it goes back to https and I get logged in again.

Huh, yeah whenever I'm logged out it looks like I'm on http version of the page.

We force Https on our end and it should always redirect, but pointing all your links to it might help. That button pointing to http is on the main site in the screen cap is on the mainsite, I flipped the ones I saw in the theme over. If its sending you to http by any other means, can someone point out their specific navigation?

Usually just clicking the "forums.penny-arcade.com" in my history popup thing in chrome would occasionally send me to the http version, but I haven't had it in a while. I don't frequently get logged out when I load up at home from when I was logged in at work as often as I did. And clicking a subforum seems to always log me back in when it does happen (it's only the main page that's not logged in?)

Hard to collect evidence on this because of how sporadic it is.

I was also having this problem on occasion, but I just checked my bookmark and it was http. I tacked on the s, so I'll see if it keeps happening. For what it's worth, said bookmark was also directly to G&T.

My 'bookmark' is most definitely out of date and pointing at the http site.

My bookmark is pointing to "forums.penny-arcade.com" and I get sent to the http site, where it shows me as logged out. I get the weird broken popup that others are seeing if I try to log in here.

Manually directing my browser to "https://forums.penny-arcade.com" sends me to the https site and I am logged in.

i just reacted to a post, scrolled down three posts, and reacted to another post but it wouldn’t let me with the second because i was suddenly logged out without reloading the page

not sure if related. refreshing or moving to a different area of the forums didn’t show me logged back in like with the other logout bug. i had to actually sign back in

never seen this particular thing happen before

This is happening to me again.

https link to the main forum page. Refreshing does nothing. Clicking a link to a subforum usually logs me in.

For the last half hour or so, I had been been caught in a loop on the mobile version where logging in just immediately dumped me back on the log in page. It seems to have cleared up now, hopefully.

  • IrukaIruka Registered User, Moderator mod
I talked to some folks about this and there are multiple factors at play, We have some patches on the back burner that should ease this issue but it'll be a minute before we deploy them, I'll probably check in in a weekish.

Sorry, didn't come back to this yesterday, and I didn't try clicking on subforums. I would be in my bookmarks and clicking threads and it would log me out as I got to the thread.
