Ran into a guy a couple of times tonight in MWO that was going off and hiding in a corner, or suiciding.

He was doing this in a Marauder II. Like...why?
We had a Spider running a single small pulse laser that would hide in a corner of a map and shut down. Just, why dude.

Wow, so the trolls are back? Easiest thing is to report them and hope that PGI actually does something.

But today is Thursday, so everybody knows what that means right?

No, it isn't Senior Discount Day at the local supermarket (although that might be true). It is OOSIK NIGHT! So dust off those keyboards and get ready for some shenanigans. I'm going to plan to be on like usual and try out some really bad builds. Or at least looking forward to it till the big kids kick over my sand castle and then I'll take them down with my normal mechs.

So do I need to launch the game to get the MW5 preorder Marauder II? I haven't had time in a fair bit to play. It says "redeemed" on the website but I dont have it in my bay on the site. I might have time to log in tomorrow. Always looking for another free Assault that I'll never finish skilling up...

Some people were having problems with this, this thread over on the mwo site had some tips:

Just figured this out, because they made it hella confusing.

you have to go to https://mw5mercs.com/profile and login to your MW5 account. From there, you'll see a bunch of redemption codes to redeem on https://mwomercs.com/profile/redeem
I redeemed the first code back in january because that's what was in the order email. I didnt realize there was 3 other codes in there, and they did a real bad job of telling people.

I've got all 4 redeemed. I'll have to log into the game itself to see if that's required, since the list of owned mechs on mwomercs doesn't show me as owning it. Overall I wouldn't even be that upset, it looks like it will be similar to the Corsair? Or something. I almost never drop with Assaults, only for challenges and if they have 2x XP bonuses.

I kind of want to try an AC2-LPPC-Rocket build with the Bushwacker...

I'm a little disappointed that the Atlas II didn't have a custom model or geometry, but commanding that lance was fun. Also, it surprised me how useful a team of MechWarriors with Multi-target were; I'm not sure if that holds up though once you have a custom lance that gets rid of the mixed weapon loads so many of the canon builds use.

Multi-target is pretty useful for holding agro on missions where you need to defend something. As long as you touch enemies during a round, I found they'd ignore objectives to attack you. Otherwise it's insanely difficult to protect anything, you have to distract them.

I also used multi-target a ton to split autocannon/lrm/srm fire between targets to deal the tipping blow to unstable targets, knocking three mechs down at once for those juicy pilot injuries while trying to catch rare, shiny mechs.

Towards the end of the campaign I was actually lamenting I didn't grab it on more of my pilots.

This was the mission that made it occurred to me that multiple targets can be great, and the reason that mech hardpoints are all over the place sometimes.

And yes, you do need to log in for the mechs to get added. Logging in is when the game injects the mechs, mechbays, camo patterns, titles, premium time, etc... to your account.

The base defense missions in particular are where I find multi-target to be useful. Convoy defense my main issue is typically that the damned convoy is going full speed ahead, and you need a medium to make time on it. So instead of being an escort my workaround is to figure out where the convoy is going, station 3 of my mechs most of the way there, and leave my fastest/longest ranged mech behind to ferry the convoy on up.

Of course, this all comes to naught when hostiles spawn in shooting range of the convoy at the dropoff point and immediately wreck two of the APCs

but at least that doesn't happen very often

Yep. Also useful in certain late game scenarios when you're lobbing indirect fire at multiple mechs and you want to get full damage value. You can fire 3 full damage salvos at three targets using breaching shot rather than losing 20-60% of damage from all of them at one target.

This last career I had two pilots with Bulwark/Sensor Lock/Master Tactician and everyone else with Bulwark/Multi-target/Breaching shot.

It's definitely a tradeoff between dealing max damage and taking one hostile mech out of the hostile lance earlier so you take less incoming damage.

Bulwark is a must, Multi-target is nice, but Breaching Shot vs. the heat venting option is a tough choice.

Also, I like making aimed shots as much as possible, which reduces the usefulness of breaching shot unless it's like a single AC20 shot instead of an AC20, an SRM6s, an LRM10, and 2 MLas++s...

edit: the long ranged mech with an AC5++dam and a pair of ++dam LLas and LRM15 ain't a bad one either for doing aimed shots--though lower probability of a single salvo headshot kill.

Heat venting damages the pilot, though, right? Is that damage soaked up by damage reducing cockpit mods? I'd pretty much written off heat venting as something that would sideline pilots in medbay.

Nope. Just nets you an extra 26 heat every 4 rounds. Pretty fuckin' nice. You don't have to overheat to fire the ability.

Yeah this ability is incredibly handy on my brawly Orions, they run a bit hot, so the ability to get them 1-2 more turns of shooting to finish off their targets is very useful.

It did cause a pilot injury in the 1.3 beta version.

Do high Guts pilots still have a chance of ignoring injuries? I think that was a thing that could happen, even without a fancy cockpit.

Guts reduces your chance to die when incapacitated by 5% per level. Starting from a base death chance of 90% if downed by wounds or 140% if the cockpit is destroyed.

Cockpit mods can absorb wounds, but if the mod is destroyed by a critical, it will not protect against the wound from that same attack.

And of course you still die when the head gets blown off. I’ve had that happen once, so these days I eject anybody who has a head that is getting down to the structure.

Glitch finally has her own heavy: an LRM-45 Orion.

So, yes, I have 3 Orions and a Grasshopper for my main combat lance. Not quite what I had in mind but I'm not going to complain.

  • OrcaOrca Also known as Espressosaurus WrexRegistered User regular
Orions are fantastic. They're my go-to mech until I get my hands on some Assaults.

  • NobodyNobody Registered User regular
Oh yeah, I'm not complaining, my brawly Orions just munch through anything that gets within AC/20 range and the first mission I had with Glitch out in this mech had her stripping a Catapult and Quickdraw like a pack of Piranhas.

I'm not 100% happy on Decker's Grasshopper though, he can basically salvo the PPCs once, and then duck and run until he can cooldown. Granted, when he's salvoing it's almost always to precision shot something off of an enemy mech

  • OrcaOrca Also known as Espressosaurus WrexRegistered User regular
I'm not a fan of PPCs personally. Have you tried a 3x LLas instead? Costs you 1 ton more, but you get 20% more damage (albeit spread across 3 shots instead of 2) for 77% of the heat.

  • FiendishrabbitFiendishrabbit Registered User regular
PPCs are too hot for a grasshopper. 100% MLs and machineguns is the way to go.

A dedicated sniper could go 4x LLas with 8 heatsinks, with a net 18 heat per alpha strike. Or you could give up 3 heatsinks and replace them with jump jets if you want the maneuverability.

Or turn into a partial brawler by giving up 1-2 of the LLas, fitting an SRM4 in the head, adding a medium laser or two, and maxing out SLas, flamers, or MGs. With 28 tons free, you can do quite a bit.

My heads are always taken up by cockpit upgrades. But then I used the grasshopper as a pointman, max jump jets, mgs and ml lasers and just jumping in behind them and absolutely wrecking them.

I would ordinarily suggest going full brawler, but it sounds like that role is already ably taken by the Orions :D

An Orion kan be a brawler, a sniper and a firesupport mech.

Orions are great. And since they sit happily at the top of their weight band with a range of useful hard points, I'll usually run an Orion over a 'low band' assault like a Victor, Zeus or Battlemaster.

Obviously in campaign/career you take what you can get. These days, though, my lance progression takes a fairly stable path from the starter 50/55 tonners and friends through Jagermech, Orions, Highlanders and King Crabs. I'm not turning up my nose at any Thunderbolts or Grasshoppers that sneak in there, but that's sort of the default path. (Esp. the LRM Jagermech, which I adore.)

I thought I was free, but this talk of heat venting not causing damage has me starting another campaign. With 8 pieces salvage. 25+ missions in and I finally bring home a Panther (after it already being obsolete from the first story mission rewards...) (Also missing the elite cheevo for campaign by only 10k instead of over 100k is chafing...)

    What is wrong with me...?

Pretty sure the fact you picked eight salvage for a whole 'Mech.

I mean, everyone should find their fun, and I'm not yucking your yum if that's how you like it...but that sounds completely unbearable to me.

Also, add me to chorus of Orion fanboys. They're fine in TT, but in BT they're fantastic and flexible. I've got four and counting in my playthrough.

I've got two Dragons, and despite kitting one as a straight-up physical combatant (MGs and Punch Mods) and the other as a short-range brawler (MLs and SRMs), neither feels particular good.

It's a similar problem to the Cicada: it's a heavier 'Mech pretending to be something lighter than it is. It's fine but it loses something in the translation to BT.

IIRC (I did the math at one point but don't have battletech open right now to check) the Dragon has the same or less free tonnage as one of the better mediums. So all you're getting is higher structure in exchange for slower speed, lower initiative, and heavier jump jets.

Pretty lame if you ask me.

Jaegers aren't that great, but at least they can fit more than a medium. They make passable snipers.

  • NobodyNobody Registered User regular
Decker used to have a Dragon in my run, it worked well as a heavy scout and flanker.

A medium probably could have done a better job, but probably wouldn't have been as threatening in melee or had as much armor.

    Dragons are simple.

You know how, for the Urbie, they said, "What if Assault, but on a light?" Well, for the Dragon, they said, "What if Jenner, but Heavy."

I really dislike the Dragons in the BT game. The only real purpose they served for me was to act as the first heavy (for whatever reason that's one of the first heavy's you can reliably get) in your lance, and I found they don't even do that well since there's a bunch of mediums that outperform it. I've tried using it as a scout/damage soak but it just doesn't put out enough damage to justify the tonnage, it's too easy to strip off it's valuable weapons, and likewise too easy to lose valuable melee mods.

  • OrcaOrca Also known as Espressosaurus WrexRegistered User regular
I find Dragons pointless for all the reasons you articulated. Thanks, I'll stick with my ShadowHawks, Wolverines, and Kintaros (if I can get my hands on one).

There is enough tonnage on an Atlas to fit 6 SRM6++s and an AC20 with a useful amount of ammunition!

...granted, the thing runs hotter than a damned default Kintaro. With two double heatsinks and a 10% exchanger it still nets 41 heat per alpha strike

    but

each alpha strike does 540 damage (I have one SRM6 that's the +2 damage variant instead of +4)

    That is LUDICROUS.

JK also has a Stalker variant that counts as a heavy and not an assault. It's stupid OP.
