Nostalgia definitely plays a factor, but there's a some legitimately good actors in the first one. Raiden and Johnny Cage were definite highlights, and of course Shang Tsung was a decent bad guy. The other movies all kinda blur together for me but the original had some charm to be had, under all the hammy special effects. The Goro fight in particular I remember looking bad even as a kid.
It's better than say, the Street Fighter movie, which is pure camp. But watching any of the MK films as an adult is tough, they're clearly for kids (ironic, considering the controversy at the time).
Mortal Kombat is fine as a campy kung-fu movie. It's memorable in regards to how enthusiastically it embraced the source material instead of being embarrassed by it.
The movie references in MK 11 are awesome. Sub-zero asking Liu Kang what he was chatting with Kitana about and him going a Pail of water was priceless.

I'm not saying I don't enjoy the first MK movie, but the new one doesn't have an enormous mountain to climb and could potentially be as good or better. It could even have b-b-b-blood in it.

Ooohhh, nice attention to detail with her fatality. When you finish off Kano with her standard one that ends with her pushing a blood sickle through the back of the opponents skull and their eye coming out, it varies with him. Should you be standing at the end of a round so that when performing the fatality the blood sickle goes through his cyber eye, an eyeball doesnot appear coming through the back of his skull.
Anytime I see Kollector I can't help but hear "I pick things up, I am the collector. Big things, little things, that tend to accumulate." being sung by Mr Reznor in my head.
Like I can’t figure out what relic lure is for. It does less damage than his other combo ender, and for meter it does even less damage but pops them up to... no follow up because it doesn’t link to anything. He has a command grab with tiny range that you can’t combo into. His mace is useless and every guide says “don’t use this”. His projectile absorb is useless and should have its meter function by default.
He’s still usable but it’s just hit confirm into meter burn bolo/disk* do his one combo, repeat. Most of his tools have no purpose.

People keep talking about how bad Kollector is but he is one I consistently struggle against in towers. Him and Scorpion are continuous pains in my ass.
Then again I don't fare too well in general much past Medium difficulty. So maybe I just suck.
I think he’s solidly mid tier but only because no one knows how to fight him and he has weird tricks. It’s not that he’s bad so much as he has a bunch of useless tools.
I decided to take on the Gauntlet towers. Got up to 24 or 25 so far. The one I'm on currently has poison gas on the ground, land mines on the ground, and the CPU's attacks do poison damage. The konsumable to removing ground hazards did not remove the gas or the land mines (land mines are what was killing me). I literally got knocked back into a land mine, which popped me up into the next land mine, which popped me up into the next land mine, which popped me up into the next land mine during one match.
Additionally, points earned during the Gauntlet towers do not contribute to your actual Tower point standing, so don't worry about trying to Mercy or Brutality them. Kind of dumb.

At this point I feel like they could use the story modes from the game and have the basics for a movie mapped out.
Like, Injustice would be a better movie than DC has managed with the Justice League.
I feel like it is possible that MK9 can be done as a movie and still be coherent. The reality is that if mk9 were given the movie treatment it would be catastrophically bad though
The overall plot would work, but they'd need to do a little more work on justifying the fights:
"Hey, could I talk to you?"
"I'm a little busy right now, can it wait?"
"A challenge! FIGHT!"
Nobody remembers the singer. The song remains.

Also the cringe-inducing ‘Johnny Cage is so intent on protecting Sonya Blade on Shang Tsung’s island he kicks the crap out of her’ scene in MK9.
I managed to complete all 30 Gauntlet towers yesterday. Not all in one day, obviously, but the final towers were wrapped up yesterday.
They definitely did them last / put them through QA last. Rewards were wrong (it would list 50 time crystals and give me 100 or vice versa), the wording on some of the challenges for the towers was wrong or horribly vague (looking at you "5 Krushing Blows" towers!), they spelled Gauntlet "guantlet" for one of the konsumables, and once a Konsumable didn't stop what I'd presume it was designed to stop (i.e., konsumable says it removes ground hazards, WHY AM I STILL RUNNING INTO LANDMINES?). Hell, all the points you earn for the tower completions? They don't contribute to your weekly running total!
Not that that last bit mattered, I was already in the 0.1%, but the point is....
Tower 24 (or 25) was the hardest for me due to the aforementioned landmines / poison. There are a ton of cool skins and unlocks the Gauntlet gives you, though.
Now I am curious how the DLC characters skins / gear will be acquired.

Most of the servers I belong to are relatively small. Are big ones like this doomed to just devole into twitch chat? Obviously they can moderate (if they bother) but if there are several thousand people constantly talking the whole chat room thing seems silly
From what I've been seeing, the characters who are considered low-tier have a couple of things in common: firstly, weak crushing blows. Secondly, no overhead mix-ups. The second one is the big one, because against say, Kung Lao, you can just block low all day and he can't do shit.
The high tier characters like Geras just have a lot of tools and can very easily get a ton of damage off a crushing blow.
I went and joined that Discord and the first thing I saw was a guy complaining that they reduced the size of Skarlet's breasts and noped right the fuck back out again.

There’s a pretty concerted effort to complain that the female characters aren’t dressed like porn stars because NRS caved to the PC brigade and so it’s the worst MK ever or some shit.
It made me actively avoid any discussion on the game outside of here.
I went and looked up what Skarlet looked like in previous games and I would legitimately have been too embarrassed to play as her. Sonya was even worse! It looks like she forgot to put on a shirt under her tactical vest.
Look up Deadly Alliance Sonya if you want to go all the way down this rabbit hole.

The inherent sexism of the female MK9 outfits and the violence you then inflicted on them made me legit uncomfortable. The dialogue shouted at Catwoman from Arkham City was just as bad.
I cannot express in words how relieved I am that NRS changed track with regards to their portrayal. Now the main issue for me in 11 is Rousey. Both her as a person, and her "performance."

Given the sexism going on behind the scenes, I can't personally give then a thumbs up even if I appreciate having the ladies dressed apropriately.
Edit: changed to sound less inflammatory.
Wait I knew about bad overtime stuff, what’s the sexism stuff?
The mismanagement and toxic environment seemed to be more keenly felt by female employees, who shared experiences as far back as 2015.
Former QA analyst Rebecca Rothschild worked on “Mortal Kombat X” and “Injustice 2,” and explained that she had 90- to 100-hour workweeks on both titles. She left her job, uncertain that she wanted to continue to work in the gaming industry, despite not all of her experience being negative.
“At the same time, I have never been more aware of my gender and insignificance at a workplace,” she told Variety. “I left with scars and fear of an industry I am deeply passionate about. I don’t like being a news story. I have nothing to gain from this professionally. I just want management to at least consider the other side and try to be better.”
Rothschild recounted to Variety her experience working at NetherRealm as a female developer.
“As far as being aware of my gender, it was a lot of things,” she explained. “The small amount of women working there, the even smaller amount of women who were full time or had any kind of real influence. Being given a disgusting nickname I won’t repeat by a set of co-workers I never spoke to.”
Another source stated that all of the women in the office were given nicknames by male developers.
“Sexist, transphobic and generally toxic behavior was rampant, likely due to the fact that people were working 80-plus hours a week for months on end and there was no accountability for such behavior,” the former female employee told Variety via email. “I heard from multiple people that a cabal of male [developers] had nicknames for all of the women in the office, including ‘Silver Fox’, ‘DB’/’Dyke Bitch’ and ‘Morph,’ in reference to a trans employee. A co-worker once jokingly called an ‘Injustice Mobile’ character who did bleeding damage over time ‘Time-of-the-Month Wonder Woman’ in the presence of two leads, and referring to women as ‘bitches’ was commonplace.”
This mistreatment seemed to extend to women’s experience trying to get raises or promotions while working at NetherRealm, according to Rothschild.
“I was on my third contract and before I could even try and negotiate I was told the hourly pay rate was non-negotiable,” she said. “I heard the same from a lot of women I worked with. However, I heard from men working on contract that they were able to negotiate and get a higher rate. Same thing with promotions. The studio would create positions for specific people — all men. That meant no one else got a chance to interview or even hear about these positions. If you were adjacent to executive friend circles, which were almost all entirely male, you had a much better shot at job mobility. If not, you had to get real comfy, because you weren’t going anywhere.”

Street Fighter is a timeless classic.
Looking at his intro where he throws a bag down and a head rolls out, I'm pretty sure it's Hsu Hau's head.

I forget. Is that when she had the thong riding high on her hips, or just the tan line of her thong riding high on her hips?

Thong on her hips (in a way I'm not sure would even work,) a belly shirt that might as well be painted on, and a spiked collar for some reason.
