From the Japanese trailer, I hope the boss-fights aren't just the blinged out blobby monsters from the Upside Down. Also I'll wait for better eyes than me to "179.5 Things You Miss"'d for this trailer, but is it me, or does Riggs gun look like it's loaded with blood?

I don't mind the FRAGILE name as it's obviously not her full name and who knows how badass she'll be (second to Military Cliff, she's got the best character design I think). Sure the justification for Quiet's outfit was beyond silly, but I still think she was a fun character and I brought her along on most of my missions. As for Paz, she isn't the only kid to have it rough in that game. Hell she isn't the only person to have it rough.

. . .I have higher hopes for this game than I did MGSV (and I had no hopes for that game after IV until I started to see the previews and realized it was going bonkers). I like the idea of getting in on weird shit at the ground floor.

I still don't get why people are so hard on 4 considering it has the most gameplay out of any of the core games, and solidified the over the shoulder system 5 used. It just has an even longer story. It should have been an RPG. :D

"The most gameplay" isn't necessarily a great selling point. Same with "an even longer story."

    also, "long" =/= "good"

just look at A Song of Ice and Fire (and YES, book stans, I am including the books in the long =/= good calculation)

(conversely, one of my favorite games of all time is Transistor, and it's not actually that long)

Because the gameplay is also really good? I'm not sure how you can argue MGS3 has "better" gameplay when 4 is an evolution towards what we see in 5, and based on what we've seen DS.

I haven't argued that MGS3 is better gameplay than 4 or 5. But MGSV had the best gameplay by far.

I swore that I wouldn't make fun of Kojima's naming schemes after learning of the existence of Chad Warmington, but damn if he doesn't make it difficult.

One thing this trailer has, along with the opening of MGSV, is extreme weirdness without the barest hint of an explanation. I almost hope that he doesn't bother to explain anything about WHY the world is like it is; learning what the dangers are and how people manage to survive among them is interesting enough.

One thought I had, and this is probably extremely uncharitable of me, is that Kojima really really wants to be thought of as an auteur film director, but instead of making arthouse movies he goes and casts his favorite big-name directors in his new game so they'll let him into their club. But that's better than casting himself.

Oh gods, he's going to do that again, isn't he...?

This is a really neat dissection of the trailer from an art/3D modeling/technical perspective, from an Insomniac character artist:

Some of the things he's noticing are surreal.

Sadly, no. Hot Coldman was my measuring stick for a long time for how stupid Kojima names could get.

Chad Warmington is a real person and the head of an oil and natural gas company. I figured that if real life is going to be this dumb and unsubtle, Hideo gets a pass for the foreseeable future.

While I think MGSV is probably the best MGS, definitely from a gameplay perspective, the intro commits what I consider a mortal design sin: Forcing the player to move slowly.

Now, I get it it. It's an immersion technique, especially if used well. And it was used well in MGSV. But it's also super fucking annoying. And the annoyingness is worse than whatever immersive value it has.

So dear god please don't put any of that in Death Stranding.

(I'm 100% sure there will be elements of that in Death Stranding.)

    That twitter thread is amazing.

I really hope Kojima isn't working people to death. I don't think he is, because I don't think I've ever heard of any accusations of a hostile workplace with him.

I think he's just the right amount of insane passion/creative genius that folks who sign up to work with him are the best in the biz, and are genuinely excited to spend 3 week rendering a rock covered with moss.

    It’s a game of ladders.

More specifically it’s a baby carrying ladder game about climbing through the social strand friendship combat stealthless system wasteland diamond dogs.

I hope that clears everything up.

    The player is the baby.

I'm calling it right now. That's how the "bridges" between players works, it'll be explained in-game as some sort of psychic connection or whatever.

I was thinking - with all the biomes and stuff we’ve seen so far...

What if this social strand thing means that you literally are unable to make it across the country without help.

The blurb said it has asynchronous multiplayer where you can leave things at safehouses or whatever. What if you start at one end of the country and have to walk to the other. And when you get to a place that can’t be crossed you use your ladder, or leave behind your rope or whatever, and the next person getting there has them there.

And if you die, since there is no “game over”, it tosses you into the upside down to kill a few hours - allowing other players to maybe beat what you got stuck on or leave you health or gear - so when you’re revived you’re now a little better equipped.

I just hope every character trailer is literally adding another layer of weird questions on to the Mt. Fuji sized pile we already have. From the release date trailer, I thought his character was about to get murdered when he's being dragged away from the surf, but looks like that might be him getting "reborn."

Non-story related, those character models are off the damn chain. Even Reedus just sitting there and the expression on his face as Heartman comes back. Really hoping BL3 and Fire Emblem make the wait for November easier.

Man, the lore stuff being revealed in this Game Awards footage is incredibly fucked up.
The babies carried around are all born to brain-dead women kept in the Big City (whatever the proper name is) and they are disposed of after about a year of service because it becomes too difficult to maintain the illusion that they're still in their mother's womb. All of this is necessary in order to "bridge the gap between the world of the living and the dead"or whatever.

Jesus Christ Kojima, wish you could include even the mention of women in your game without it being problematic as fuck.

So not a fan of Handmaids Tale huh?

EDIT: I'm loving folks on the stream and forums (like ResetEra) losing their shit at the cutscenes and "boring" gameplay. I mean this could entirely fall completely flat in execution but I'm willing to allow for a little breathing room between now and Nov. for the full experience to start forming.

Yeah this batch of stuff was the very first time my hype levels nosedived.

Not because of gameplay or anything, that all looked good.

But because that baby backstory really made me uncomfortable, and not in a "oh creepy David Lynch" way, but in a "thats very lazy 'shocking' storytelling and its gross" way.

I am hopeful I don't "get" it yet and there's more to it, but I am extremely doubtful.
