My biggest issue with this movie
Godzilla wins the final fight via a few Deus Ex Machina nuclear blast attacks that we'd never seen before and probably never will again. Compare that with him fucking executing both MUTOs in 2014 in brutal, graphic fashion. I know I walked out of 2014 a lot more satisfied.

    He's also never been
directly nuked in such a way I can remember before. And Shin Godzilla actually had something similar.

The Half in the Bag guys were mostly positive about the movie. Their biggest problems were the family drama and the fact that it had been so long since the previous movie that they forgot all about what happened in that one (one of them didn't even know Kong: Skull Island was part of the franchise). They didn't even mind the comic relief character. Plus, they recommend Shin Godzilla!

I can’t remember if it was in the first movie or in outside media produced for it
That was what all the nuclear testing was in the South Pacific, they were trying out bigger and bigger bombs to try to kill him.

It's pure fan service. Which if you're not a long watching fan, I can see why you'd like one better than the other.

I just finished the final film in the Rebirth of Mothra trilogy. The last two really stink! I liked the first one a fair bit for what it was but it all goes downhill from there. At least King Ghidorah got one of his best designs in part three.

When your old roommate sees Godzilla and texts you asking if Godzilla has always been this weird. And you just prepare for the long inhale.

Watched the Netflix trilogy. Going in with zero expectations after hearing how bad The Planet Eater is, found it surprisingly decent. That weird ass version of Ghidorah was great. Overall it is bleak as hell tho.

I wish I liked it more personally. And the animation wasn't that weird cgi type thing that gives me a hard time every time. Because there are a lot of really cool ideas at play in it.

I really, really love the first movie.

The second movie has some good stuff in it, especially
    its take on Mecha Godzilla
but I'm not a huge fan of how it ends, mostly because
it kills, like, one of the only major female characters just to make the male lead very sad.

And the third movie is Gen Urobuchi leaning into his worst tendencies, so I kinda hate it as much as I love what they tried to do with Ghidora.

    Third movie also
Reduces the lead female character to a literal prop.

Honestly there is a much better script here somewhere that keeps the fun of the movie while still having forward momentum but still has a stronger handle on themes and doesn’t feel like such a reversal on the previous Godzilla. (Which I’d say 2014 is a *better* movie even if this one has a lot more of the bullshit I like)
I just fundamentally don’t think the villain plot works. Honestly open with Ghidorah awakening from climate change melting his ice hold is the easiest structural fix. You have the folly of man starting it still without the eye roll worthy overpopulation myth stuff. And since they hint at Ghidorah effectively terraforming the world to eradicate humanity, you don’t need the extraneous stuff with the human bad guys.

Make Charles Dance a XILLIAN or some bullshit and swing for the fences too

I just saw this and I’m trundling through the thread now. I wanted to say that I though the people plot was better executed than 2014, but I think what Gustav wrote here is probably the stronger narrative rather than what we got.

So I've been listening more to the soundtrack

Obviously Godzilla and Motrha's themes are lifted from the Toho movies

What about Ghidorah and Rodan? I had some trouble tracking down their themes, and so I had some trouble comparing them

  • Options

IIRC, the credits only mention those two in regards to old Toho music.

It's been awhile, but I'm pretty sure they just flat out use Rodan's theme as Ghidorah's theme, even in films that Rodan isn't in.

Yeah I was having a lot of trouble remembering what Rodan's classic theme was and looked it up and I thought it was Ghidorah's theme this whole time.

Yeah there was a period there in the late 60s/early 70s where they were putting out a movie every year and they were cutting budgets and it was just stock footage and reused themes all over the place

And some of those movies are my favorites!

sfdebris has continued his review of Godzilla films with King Kong vs Godzilla. I'm only a few minutes into the background video and man, did Willis O'Brien (the guy who lead the team that brought Kong to life in the 1933 film) got done dirty by hollywood and life in general. :(

Yo, thanks for posting this a while back. I watched the Heisei-era Godzilla vs. Mothra tonight and the quality was excellent. The film itself... not so much! But I'm stoked to have all the Heisei films easily available.

Finally got around to watching the original Return of Godzilla after seeing 1985 a thousand times as a kid. This one always has a weird feel to it, with the lack of Ikufube, the experimentation with the shiny state of the art 1984 cgi, and the relatively serious nature combined with stuff like the Super X and random unexplained Maser tanks.
In terms of differences with the American version I'm not surprised to find that the Soviets come across a lot better in this, but out of all the things to cut out, why would you take out the homeless guy threatening Godzilla with a rock? Fucking gold.

Also this ending song - "Goodbye now Godzilla, my old friend" - just classic.

But aren't those weird tech alien guys volunteering? It doesn't seem so bad, even if their philosophy seems wacky
