It almost seems like an independent agency of chaperones or care providers that dont report to the organization but directly to the state is necessary to escort athletes in these types of sports. It seems medieval but when dealing with this much corruption...

No, the answer is to believe women when they tell you that they have been assaulted, and to create environments where they feel safe in doing so. Women don't need chaperones, they need people to take sexual assault and rape seriously.

Yeah, but like I said I hadn't considered it. And I wouldn't be surprised if purely statutory stuff isn't more common(and not reported) than the straight up assaulting Coughlin was doing.

If you take a hotel and fill it with 13-17 year old boys and girls, some shenanigans will probably happen. Fill it with 18-24 year old men and women, aka dorms, and shenanigans will almost certainly happen. But with skating and gymnastics- maybe there are some other sports I'm not thinking of, but those are the two with the big peak age gaps - you are filling that hotel with 14-20 year old girls and 16-24 year old men. Debating the exact combinations that are okay or not okay isn't really important, but it certainly make a fraught situation. Especially when you add alcohol, not that I or anyone I know ever got drunk in a hotel room as a teenager.

While I agree about chaperones, I feel Void Slayer is correct in that you need a body that both cares and also won't let greed and corruption override their caring. It'd be nice if schools/organizations would just do this but I think we're long past trusting them on this.

Yeah, part of it is that when they are informed something did happen, action must be taken

From the very first post in this thread:
14 different MSU employees were informed of Nassar's behavior over the course of 20 years, and nothing was ever done.

Without the school covering for him, Nassar could have been stopped a decade or more ago, and that's the problem. You need an organization that will take accusations seriously, and prevent reprisals. If you have that, the next Nassar won't operate for decades, because his victims will know they have someone they can talk to.

The big thing we're going to have to change, in the end, is the idea that winning is not the be-all end-all result in any kind of sporting event. How long ago would have all these abusers- all these scum coaches and trainers- been tossed out on their asses if winning didn't matter in the end? I mean, think about it- would Nassar have lasted this long if we were more concerned with athlete safety rather than not trying to dump toxic individuals even though they were really good at winning us stuff?

Yup. This isn't just about believing women. It's about having someone keeping an eye on these things who had no stake in the success of the team/organization/school/etc.

One of my wife’s co-residents went to MSU DO school and she told my wife that Strampel was a giant creep. She also confirmed to her the anecdote about him ordering salads for the female students as that actually happened to her co-resident.

And in Ohio State scandals, we get some resolution with their former diving coach getting 4 years for assaulting an underage diver:
Former Ohio State diving coach William Bohonyi was sentenced to four years in prison on Monday on two counts of sexually abusing Estee Pryor, a diver who trained with the Ohio State University Diving Club when she was underage.

Bohonyi had pleaded guilty to the two counts of sexual battery back in May. Judge Michael Holbrook handed down a two-year prison sentence for each of the charges against Bohonyi, with the possibility of conditional release after one year. He will also be listed on the sex offender registry for the rest of his life, according to Columbus news outlet 10 TV’s Bennett Haeberle.

And MSU opens mouth, inserts foot:
That tone took a sharp turn Monday as the school's legal team took a battering ram to 37 lawsuits, representing more than 100 Nassar survivors, telling a federal judge the university had no legal responsibility for anything Nassar did to any of the women. The filing sets the two sides up for a nasty, long court battle.

"Although Nassar’s actions were repugnant and merit the heavy criminal penalties imposed upon him, the law does not support Plaintiffs’ attempts to hold the MSU Defendants liable for his wrongs," the university said in a court filing of more than 100 pages, backed by nearly 900 pages of exhibits.

In the sweeping motion for dismissal of the suits, MSU's law team repeatedly bashed the survivors' legal arguments, saying there was nothing those survivors said that rose to any liability from the university. MSU's lawyers said the suits weren't filed at the right time, the survivors had no standing to sue MSU and there was no way MSU could have known Nassar was a sexual predator.

...what the fuck? It's been shown repeatedly that MSU only had to just look to see what's going on.

Meh, actually that is just how defense lawyers work. You file lots of motions to wear out plaintiff's money and endurance. What's frustrating is not so much the arguments that their lawyers are making and more the fact that MSU seems to think fighting is worth all the negative PR they're getting.

Speaking of holding MSU accountable, guess who got hit with a $4.5M fine?
This announcement follows the conclusion of two separate investigations by the department. The Federal Student Aid office oversaw the Clery Act investigation, which requires universities to post crime statistics and to communicate danger to the campus community in a timely fashion.

FSA officials say this is one of the most important Clery investigations the department has ever undertaken, given the breadth of abuse and length of time over which the abuse took place.

The fine is the largest in the history of the Clery Act, and it’s nearly twice the $2.4 million the department had levied against Penn State, following its investigation into the 2011 scandal at that university involving the assistant football coach. Previously, the largest Clery Act fine was the $350,000 paid by Eastern Michigan University in 2008 for failing to disclose a murder on campus.

In unsurprising yet revolting news, uncovered communications by the MSU board reveals that they intentionally killed a truly independent investigation:
A group of Michigan State University board members — including one elected based on a reform campaign — used months of behind-the-scenes emails, texts and phone calls to first stall a true independent investigation of the university's handling of the Larry Nassar scandal. Then they killed it.

The death came behind closed doors last week even as the federal government was issuing a scathing report of MSU's actions that both levied a record-breaking fine and still left dozens of questions unanswered.

The decision was a complete betrayal of Nassar survivors, a trio of survivors who had been working with the board said Monday.

"We are deeply disappointed and disgusted once again with the recent conduct of Trustees Diane Byrum, Brianna Scott, Melanie Foster and Joel Ferguson regarding their decision to block the pursuit of an independent investigation into Larry Nassar’s sexual misconduct," said a statement from Rachael Denhollander, Sarah Klein and Sterling Riethman. "These four trustees have continually demonstrated a complete lack of moral conviction to pursue the truth and ensure that what Larry did to hundreds of women and children never happens to anyone ever again on MSU’s campus.

One step forward and two steps back for MSU.

June Youatt resigned as the provost 9/5 after:
Investigators found that she knew about complaints involving Strampel and failed to act and called her out — along with former president Lou Anna Simon — for not responding to reports claiming Strampel's behavior was "potentially creating a sexually hostile environment for students and staff."
But now she's researching for 6 months and then taking a 6 month sabbatical and then returning to the faculty after making the big bucks of $480,000 for her off year. When back as a tenured prof she'll be making $280,000 a year. No one has started the process of trying to axe her tenure and there is no indication anyone will. MSU's new president did the no comment thing. And finally, MSU is paying for all her legal bills with the civil cases against her regarding Nassar.

I bought Denhollander's book on Friday and accidentally stayed up til 4 AM finishing it last night. She's a really good writer (surprise!).

Parts of it I don't understand (evangelicalism is creepy), but everything else is really compelling. The story of how she met her husband (it involves Xanga, of all things) is particularly amusing. The important thing is how it details the thought process of a survivor and why not reporting seems like the best choice a lot of the time.

In "about fucking time" news, the Feds are investigating USA Swimming:
The Wall Street Journal reported today that several federal government agencies are in the process of investigating USA Swimming, the sport’s national governing body, over a variety of alleged misdeeds, following a report last month that the U.S. Department of Justice was investigating several U.S. Olympic organizations. Prosecutors will look into “allegations that the organization stifled athlete sexual-abuse claims, concealed its assets, and improperly reaped hundreds of thousands of dollars” in an insurance scheme.

The Justice Department’s money-laundering and child-exploitation units, as well as the Washington, D.C. U.S. Attorney’s office, will be investigating USA Swimming. One aspect under scrutiny is a system for reporting sexual abuse allegations that witnesses told the Journal “stifled the reporting of abuse allegations, while protecting the organization’s bottom line and reputation.” As part of that system, accusers had to include the victim’s name in formal complaints and speak to a lawyer who was presented as impartial, but actually represented USA Swimming. This system was phased out amid the widespread sexual abuse scandals of the past few years.

Dear Texas: What the everloving fuck?
A fifth suspect will avoid jail time for his alleged role in the mass rape case that victimized 10 high school boys and has for years roiled the tiny town of La Vernia, Texas, just 30 miles southeast of San Antonio.

Robert Olivarez, Jr. pleaded no-contest to a felony charge of unlawful restraint on Monday and was sentenced to five years deferred adjudication, which often includes community service and probation but does not involve jail time, the Texas Attorney General’s Office confirmed on Thursday. Unlike a guilty plea, a no-contest plea is an acceptance of the court’s punishment without an admission of guilt. So far, none of the former students who were allegedly involved in the mass rapes have been sentenced to time behind bars.
Four other teens pleaded no contest and were sentenced to probation earlier this month for their alleged roles in the mass rapes, which were reported by The Daily Beast in March 2017. That month, 13 La Vernia High School students—many of them varsity athletes on the football and basketball teams—were arrested over allegations that they sodomized their younger teammates using deodorant bottles, cardboard rods, flashlights, soda bottles, pipes, and baseball bats.

The assaults became so routine, according to mothers of purported victims and court documents, that boys who were promoted to varsity teams began showering with underwear on in an effort to deter their assailants. There was so much ripped, bloody underwear shoved down drains that it clogged the pipes in the locker room, two La Vernia mothers told The Daily Beast in 2017.

Allow me to repeat myself: what the everloving fuck? Oh, and if you're wondering why they thought they could get away with it:
In the weeks after the arrests, students at the school, many of them athletes, were calling the victims “rats and snitches,” The Daily Beast previously reported. At least one student even expressed support for the accused boys by wearing a T-shirt to school with Robert Olivarez Jr.’s face on it.

Jim Jordan may have bigger issues than impeachment to deal with, as a new federal lawsuit by a collegiate wrestling refereeasserts that Jordan and the other coaches knew about the abuses the wrestlerswere suffering:
In a federal lawsuit filed Thursday, a referee alleges that Ohio State wrestling coaches, including now Republican congressman Jim Jordan, were aware of the sexual misconduct of disgraced former Ohio State doctor Richard Strauss. The suit, the latest of more than a dozen suits filed against the university, says that Strauss masturbated in front of the referee, identified as John Doe 42* in court papers, in a shower following a wrestling match in 1994. The ref said he then alerted the team’s coaches, then–head coach Russ Hellickson and assistant Jim Jordan, about Strauss’ behavior, but they shrugged it off, saying: “Yeah, yeah, we know.”

USC has come to settlement terms with Tyndall victims:
A federal judge approved a $215 million class-action settlement between USC and thousands of women seen by Dr. George Tyndall, the former longtime campus gynecologist.

The university will pay about 18,000 former patients, regardless of whether they've accused Tyndall of misconduct.

Former patients will receive a minimum of $2,500. Those willing to provide further details about their allegations could receive $250,000.
