After the garbage fire of an ending that was Lost, no one spent the next year railing against JJ Abrams. No one claimed that is career was over or that he had lost all credibility in the industry. This attitude of pop culture outrage is really getting tiring. This is the same shit that's happening with Star Wars.
I mean, Lindelof et all did not exactly get showered with praise after Lost ended or even leading up to that. And that show kind of disappeared from the public consciousness immediately after it ended and, at least from my impression, had already kind of faded as it went on as it became obvious there were no real answers to any of the mysteries.
Is still impressive to me how Season 8 of GOT squandered so much goodwill so quickly
I was starting to fade on Benioff and Weiss near the end of season 6 and that went into hyperdrive over the last 2 seasons. The last 11 episodes of the show just brought into sharp focus what started to appear around the mid point of season 5, they are decent adapters but suck as original voices.
Pretty much everyone I've spoken to in person, not all supernerds, hated the ending of the show.

The final season of GoT wasn't nearly as bad you people are making it out to be. The backlash on the internet in NO WAY is representative of the general public's view of the series. This insistence that D&D are somehow tainted or have lost their credibility is embarrassing and fucking cringy. Watching angry internet nerds harass them on the internet makes me ashamed to be associated with their kind.
I certainly bode them no ill will or actual hate as people (and I certainly don't agree with those that have gone overboard with such vitriol online), but I feel that (a lot like Lucas on the Prequel Trilogy) when given full creative control and not needing to cleave closer to the known plot skeleton of the books they seemingly stopped gathering the same amount of input from the rest of the writing team that was not them on plot choices, dialog polishing (probably my biggest single complaint over the last 10-15 episodes, the flow and feel, especially of Tyrion and Varys' speech was down right mangled at times), and overall pacing.
I won't have major trouble going back and rewatching seasons 7 and 8 on future revisits, because while I'm not a huge fan of some of the huge geographic leaps and seemingly non-existent measuring of time in universe, and big narrative jumps that seemed to be missing more intermediate steps than a plan by the Underpants Gnomes, they are still above average TV with sky high production values and the same level of design and craft that the series had maintained since the start. And really, everyone wound up in places that made overall sense for their character arcs in the show version (save maybe
Bran
, which seemed the biggest stretch) of Westeros, even if some of them got there in the most convoluted or head-scratching ways possible.
I mainly find the way they stuck the landing on it a lost opportunity and lament what could've been. In context and comparison from the highs of the first 4 seasons, some bits of 7 and 8 certainly hit trash fire proportions, but overall all I'd consider both of them around a 6/10, save The Bells and The Iron Throne which I'd peg around a 3 or 4/10 at best.
I do feel that at this point I wouldn't trust them with a lot of money if it's an IP they've come up with or would have absolute control of production, but I think they could still be decent at doing adaptations or being project leads with someone else there to help cover their seemingly demonstrated weakpoints at interstitial plotting and dialog.

I remember Lindelof publicly apologising, disappearing for a year or two then starting to get back in saddle again with puff pieces from the media. Lost became controversial to the fandom and public, also kind of a joke except the hostility didn't rival GOT's in aggressiveness from my recollection - but that's not happened with D & D. They both got it worse from the fandom, I can't recall the media reaction to Lost's final season to compare the two, and they moved onto other big projects as though they were King of the World. Fascinating how the landscape has been altered.

I didn't watch GoT at all, so the fact that everybody I have personal contact with who watched the show made some kind of comment about how disappointing and bad the ending was is a lot more than just some nerds shouting on the internet. That's not a crowd that's going to see the phrase "by the makers of GoT" and want to see that, it's a crowd that's going to remember how they got invested in a show for years and it got run into the dirt.
At best, they'll just ignore the content and move on. If the new stuff catches any of their attention, it'll be of the variety where they discuss how much GoT ended up sucking. I haven't run into anybody that seemed in any way outraged, but nobody was happy with having that much of their time wasted.
The thing is, there were tons of people who had HBO subs only for GoT and dropped it when GoT was over. When I called to cancel mine, the person on the other end said it was a tale she'd heard many times before.
So, if Netflix can get those people who dropped HBO to come over, then its worth it. That's the bet they are making.
People act like it was the last few episodes of GoT, but it took a downward turn the second they caught up with the books. It's clear without a scaffolding they don't know what they are doing.

Marc Decascos and the guy from the Raid makes me think it'll be right in my wheelhouse, but was wanting to know whether I should hit it when I get home tonight, or if it can wait for a bit.

Completely disagree. I was surprised at the number of people in my daily life who thought the last season, minus fireplace episode, completely sucked.
Whatever people think about the writing in GoT, they did a hell of a job on casting, direction, sets, location-selection, and costumes/makeup.
I've happily watched a lot of stuff with shittier writing than GoT so I'd totally be down for a Netflix series with the look and feel quality of GoT.
And it's not like the writing is going to be worse than, say, Another Life, which I watched a whole season of for no obvious reason.

This casino in GLOW really doesn't feel like a casino, I remember that Las Vegas show on NBC a decade ago kinda made the casino seem hella small and only working across like 3 aisles (like the Buy More on Chuck) but they actually did make it feel like a casino for setting up shots.
Just got to episode 2 of Good Girls on Netflix, and I'm loving the tone of this show. Mrs Rhesus walked in during (Episode 2 spoilers)
Christina Hendricks' gunpoint speech about how their deaths would be more trouble than they were worth
so it took a bit of convincing that there was comedy in the show as well
Also, new Preacher on Prime! Still going strong, and I'm kind of annoyed that all of my close friends would probably be put off by whatever the hell you explain this show to be. Even to explain the new season's credits, you've got:
A preacher who can control people thanks to accidentally absorbing the offspring of a demon and an angel and also kicks several kinds of arse
An Irish vampire with substance abuse issues and who had sex with...
The preacher's girlfriend who also kicks arse
A dead cowboy who is now a bounty hunter for the Afterlife, and is searching for the preacher with...
A small-town kid who survived a self-inflicted shotgun to the face, only to be sent to Hell by a poorly-worded command from the preacher, only to escape
The sadistic head of a secret organisation that influences all religions and nations
Adolf fucking Hitler, who escaped from Hell with the small-town kid
GLOW season 3 is still good, but I feel like it's a step back from season 1 and 2. Additionally, it feels like every character who isn't Ruth has come to a satisfying endpoint.
Self-righteousness is incompatible with coalition building.

I thought that was perfectly done. I saw the setup, and I'm like no. She's gonna shot talk the astronaughts. Then she started in in the teacher. I had to explain to my gf was was going on. The look on the others girls face as the scene continues and it happens as Alison brie is still going on. Perfectly done.
Finished Stranger Things 3, it was okay. It had a few standout moments but I think it was overall weaker than 2, even with that one episode we all know about.
Yeah, so. We watched Fleabag on a whim, and it's the perfect level of sarcasm and awkwardness. This should be a fun run for my wife and me.
I'm also slowly working my way through The Expanse. I absolutely love the hard SciFi in the books, and the show is staying surprisingly close to them.
The pacing needs some work, though, because the books are very meaty and contain some side exposition for bit characters. If they want to try to keep up with the books, the show needs to get through more than one book in a season.

It's good to see an episode of Grand Designs where the homeowner actually sort of said it wasn't worth it, all the headaches and trouble they had to go through (the clifftop house with the exRAF pilot, S15E1 to Netflix). Not in any schadenfreude sense but someone not trying to put up a brave face to save face.
But that modern deco Roman/Japanese house with all the maple inside (S15E4), man that's just perfect. Absolute moneysink and bureaucratic nightmare but it almost makes up for it.

I finished 'Orange Is The New Black' after seven long, hard, harrowing but emotionally uplifting seasons. Started watching in 2014, with my sister, and now we're finally at the finish line.
Difficult but wonderful, and most of all, important, television. Oh Captain my Capitan, Janeway/Red! "I can't make any new fucking memories anyway!"

Megalobox is great, it's Real Steel and Rocky but with an 80's cyberpunk aesthetic and classy new retro wave, and it's ingenious to draw the animation in 480p 80's style as opposed to wasting resources making things cleaner than it needs for the setting. More shows should copy this technique in order to save resources and frames while not taking away from the end product.

Patriot was really really good. I just binged season 1 and 2 and I just don't know how to describe this show to friends and do it any sort of justice.
I'm a little sad there won't be a season 3, but I think they ended the arc perfectly.
