So, my G29 arrived yesterday, but unfortunately the stand is not meant to get here until later this week or early next. :(

I plugged that sucker into the PS4 and had the wheel on my lap while just testing it in Dirt Rally 2.0 though, and man, definitely going to need a stand. :)

  • GnomeTankGnomeTank What the what? Portland, OregonRegistered User regular
Yeah, you need a stand, or at least something to attach the wheel to. Pedals as well or you'll just push them away from you.

So F1's into its summer break, but fear not, we have the W Series finale on Sunday (unusually for a W Series race, which have otherwise all been on Saturdays, bar the non-championship reverse grid race last time out). The fantastic Brands Hatch should be the perfect location for it as well.

I hope you guys are going to be able to see it, I know it's been getting problematic for some of you with broadcaster shenanigans.

UPDATE! Stand will be here today, a whole day earlier than expected at the earliest. Woo!

I may have bought F1 2019 and Gran Turismo Sport in anticipation...........

I still suck at this game.
I feel myself rushing or pushing too hard and also I can tell afterwards when I've made a mistake on a driving line but I can't seem to get it when I need to.
Does this come with just practice and knowing the circuit or should I turn on the driving line assist for a bit and train myself?

I wish each track had an instructional ride along video or something. Like, I struggle with figuring out how best to take corners and stuff, and the driving line just makes me dependent on it, which is super bad.

When I was trying iRacing, my friend and I did practices on one of the circuits (Can't remember which) and he taught me braking points. And within a few laps, I was racing competitive with him, no driving line needed. But I needed someone to teach me the braking points on the course.

So it'd be nice if there was a ridealong video doing that.

  • AridholAridhol Daddliest Catch Registered User regular
Yeah that's exactly what I need for each circuit like a passenger in my car saying "break now, take this line, power now, etc..." so I can learn it and practice.
The game is super fun and super frustrating at the same time.

In previous versions, I would always leave the braking lines on, so I could learn the brake points. After enough goes, I mostly just ignored it now, but still keep it on... I feel I know Australia, China and Bahrain like the back of my hand.

Now of course, moving to a wheel is going to be a big learning curve for me.

The driving/braking lines in F1 games are super conservative too. You can find much better times by learning braking points by landmark, like the distance posts on the side or other things, then learning where the best place to apex because a lot of the time you don’t want to cut the corner as close to the edge as possible because you can carry more exit speed slightly off the center of the straight apex which gives you a higher top speed on the next straight.

Sometimes. It just takes practice really. Like actually doing the full time of practice sessions for a race weekend really helps.

i don't know how F1 2019 plays, or how realistic it is but

some years ago, I grinded the hybrid McLaren F1 really hard in iRacing, and I ended up getting a pretty reasonable pace... the lessons I learned boil down to....

    * You can always go faster than you think you can. This is the gift of insane aero
    * When in doubt about a corner, try taking it at a higher gear. Engine braking is extreme in these cars, and it will impact your handling. If you're not sure if it's a 3 or a 4 corner.. try to make it a 4 before resigning to 3rd gear
    * You want your wheel and pedal work on ENTRY to be as smooth and consistent as humanly possible... if you get your entries right these cars practically glide through the corners
    * You can probably give it more wheel than you think on entry... push those fronts to the limit

and try to turn off the racing-line aids... its a hard adaptation, but those lines fuck with your instincts.... I would argue they almost shut them off completely. Just learn one track without the line markers... it will take days. But it translates really well to other tracks

I've only messed around in GT sport but using the distance boards tends to give me a better idea of how the car decelerates and is more of a consistent measure then the lines

Austria is a really, really good track to learn how to play without the line. All of the major corners have boards and good reference points, all of the corners are relatively intuitive single-apex corners, with no tightening or widening corners to worry about, and it's a really short lap so when you make a mistake early it doesn't take long before you're back at that corner to try it again, unlike longer tracks where you honestly forget about what mistake you made by the time you get up to it again.

I'd say Chadwick has the edge there because she's actually won in a F3 car there, but never say never - could be a wet race then all bets are off.

The weather this weekend in the UK is supposed to be all over the place, so a wet race is a definite possibility. Although BBC Weather currently has Sunday as looking very nice at Brands Hatch. Still, it's the UK, so who knows

Visser has the harder job, definitely. If Chadwick doesn't have an issue, then she's definitely got a big advantage, being 13 points ahead. She doesn't even need to beat Visser on track.

Watching W Series seems to be a bust again. It's broadcast on Channel 4, but not on the live stream service from what I can see. SBS have dropped the ball again, predictably enough

Yeah I searched for like an hour and couldn't find anything :(

On a positive note I am getting better at F1 2019 and @davidsdurions was right that doing the practices for a circuit helps a lot.
I have done three races so far in my career and qualified 9th, 7th, and 7th, in each with ok finishes 11th, 9th, 7th which I think is not bad.
I am with Renault and have failed both my downforce and my powert upgrades hah.

What level do you have the AI set to?

  • oldmankenoldmanken Registered User regular
So, this wheel is great, but it is very much me learning how to sim race again. I have always been decent with a controller, so feels like a step back at the moment. Most difficult thing to get used to are the pedals, how much pressure to apply, and doing the whole two footed pedaling.

Will say though, my runs in Dirt feel far more in control. Something about the forgiveness of the wheel compared to the stick is far better.

The main advantage of a wheel over a controller, i feel, is greater precision when trying to hold only a small amount of steering angle

I got immediately better at fast corners with a wheel than I was with a controller

    Dhalphir on
  • oldmankenoldmanken Registered User regular
That is what I have noticed as well, the increased turning precision. The pedal work is just catching me out at the moment.

Honestly, the driving school in GTS is very helpful in that regard, because a lot of the lessons are based around brake and throttle control.

And I've only just seen that apparently talks are underway for F1 to have a race in Saudi fucking Arabia as early as 2021.

How do I check this? I think it's probably on easy or the default. I'll look at increasing it as I feel better about driving and if I start winning easy.

In the settings/options, available from the loading screens etc. Once you're in a session it's locked for that session, but you can hit Start/Menu and change it in-between sessions. (IIRC.) It is also, AFAIK, mode-specific so you might need to change it more than once.

Mexico is staying until at least 2022. Also next year's F1 calendar is expanding to a record 22 races.

Looks like the W Series final race is going live on YouTube in an hour? Not sure if that's just for the preroll but I've got to head to bed all the same. Worth checking out for those still in limbo. I also figured out finally how to watch the race at Assen on Channel 4, and Brands Hatch too presumably when I get back from work. If anyone would like to know how, PM me

Weather at Brands Hatch looks good, but still a little windy.

    Quali spoiler:
Experience definitely counts on it, it's a tricky track, so it's not altogether surprising that the top three spots on the grid are occupied by British drivers (including a significant season best for Hawkey).

Well done, Jamie, champion! And well done Alice Powell, superb move to take the lead and ultimately the win. And Emma Kimilainen for being so opportunistic and fighting Powell all the way. And Visser for the podium.

    Good stuff!

  • JazzJazz Registered User regular
Really cool to have a separate podium ceremony for the championship as well as the usual one for the race.

I think we can put this whole series down as a huge success. I'm going to miss it until next year. And there's quite a lot of the drivers I hope we see return. The top 12 get invited back automatically; the remaining 8 can re-apply, going through the application process again, but I suspect there will be even stiffer competition for those spots for next year than for this.

They're already talking about having more races next year too, which would be awesome.

Damnit, I am thinking about buying a wheel and stand as well. I've had Project Cars 2 and GT Sports for nearly 2 years now and only ever played with a controller. But I think a wheel might be better. Especially since I plan on buying F1 2019 as well at some point.

Also, I went to the Nürburgring this weekend for the Oldtimer Grand Prix. Funnily enough, it was my first time at the 'Ring - which is odd, since I only live about 125 km away and have been a motorsports fan for most of my life. Anyways, it was an absolut blast. They had a variety of races - vintage sports cars, vintage formula 1 cars, formula 1 cars from the 70s/80s, classic DTM cars and lots more. And jeez are these things loud. Even supposedly small cars like an old Ford Escort will blow your ears off. Not to mention those Formula 1 cars from the 70/80s.

I took about 500 fotos and will post a few here tonight. This was definitely not the last time I was there. Now I only have to check the "drove on the Nordschleife" box for my bucket list.

But wasn't Red Bull saying "nah, we won't replace Gasly mid-season" the whole time?

Albon is bloody good, but I hope he doesn't suffer the same fate as Kvyat and Gasly, being dropped into that car too soon.

I felt bad for Koyama, that really was a shocker; but I felt even worse for Hawkey - after that excellent qualifying, where she could have easily cemented herself a place in the series for next season.

Agreed that Gasly losing the seat was inevitible. Seems not being anywhere near useful in Hungary may have been the final straw. It is a concern that they might be rushing Albon to a similar fate though, and it seems it's mostly down to their junior program being a bit bare. I'd suggest that they ought to at least consider hiring somebody experienced if need be and give their juniors a bit more time to grow, but they won't do that. Either way, hope that Albon is at least in the same general area on pace and manages to survive the Red Bull grinder.

  • DhalphirDhalphir don't you open that trapdoor you're a fool if you dareRegistered User regular
I definitely didn't predict Albon, but I have to say that it makes sense when I think about it now from Red Bull's perspective.

Yes, Kvyat coming back would be a great redemption arc, very good PR and all that, and yes, he's beating Albon this season and gave TR their first podium in Germany.

But Kvyat is, if not a veteran F1 driver, at least quite experienced, with multiple full seasons under his belt, and Albon first drove a Formula 1 car in February of this year. Kvyat SHOULD be beating Albon on experience alone, in fact he should be crushing him, so the fact that he's only barely ahead of Albon suggests Albon's raw talent and potential eclipses Kvyat, which may be what RB is banking on.

On top of that, Albon actually arguably did better than Kvyat in Germany. He came sixth, which is a fair way off the podium, but he also didn't benefit from the gamble on to slicks that Kvyat got, because they pitted him one lap later than Kvyat. He was actually leading Kvyat until very late in the race, which is bloody impressive for his very first ever wet F1 race, especially considering the practice sessions and qualifying were dry and thus no opportunity to acclimate to a wet Hockenheim.
