Hey, nerds. I got a dinner party in a week, a Sonos system, and terrible taste in music. What tunes do you recommend for a nice evening of feeding stuffed sopapillas to mostly librarians?

Might I suggest Brian Eno? He writes 'ambient' music, it's beautiful and classy but also unobtrusive and meditative. My favorites are his pieces that give me a mental image of floating in outer space and visiting other planets.
Perhaps some piano jazz from a Japanese pianist essentially unknown to the West until the algorithm started serving him to people who listened to Plastic Love a whole bunch?

So, it's the tenth (a week after the OP), did you go with the Dire Straits, Jedoc?

Oh, hey. The dinner was on Sunday. My starting playlist was mostly The Decemberists, Bowie, and some quieter older Barenaked Ladies songs. I took that mess and doubled it with Postmodern Jukebox songs (a high point of the evening was one of my dinner guests putting down their forks and asking "Is this a jazzy version of fucking MMMBop?" ) along with several nice Andy McKee songs. Then I added a bunch more songs based on what the algorithm made of that whole situation, and paid cash money to include Wolf Totem by The HU, which was a real show-stopper.

Thanks, H&A! You are good people.
If you played MMMbop and didn't serve MMMhops ( Hanson's microbrew) you missed out on a big opportunity
( also The Hip would have fit right alongside the Barenaked Ladies !)

Oooh, that's a good idea. Have they done any covers of Mongolian throat-singing heavy metal?

A bunch of solid, vocal-less tunes that are warm and inviting, but nothing you'll focus on over conversation.

Good music, but a bit eclectic and high-energy for a dinner party.

I found about her when she opened for Ben Folds in Salina KS a couple years ago. She's real good. Love her sound.

Useful to you?
The guitarist is Andy McKee and if you start a radio station with him you'll get lead to a bunch of similar content.

That's one of my personal favorites. Though pretty much the entire gate's of gnomeria album is good to throw on for the background at a dinner party.

That's the first song from the album if I'm not mistaken.
Thanks, H&A! You are good people.
Always knew you were a classy gent.
