Ugh, sometimes this game's lack of quest breadcrumbs can be agonizing. 2nd Island:
I'm building the gold bar, and I built my first 50 blocks, after which the villagers are supposed to be building the rest. Well they aren't, and I know I was supposed to get red dye, which I did and I dyed some light/lantern blocks, but there's no quest npc to tell me what I'm supposed to trigger the next step. Anyone remember?

That desert across the sea is where I got the dye...I think. I know I went over there and fought the guy, and I built a few red light boxes.

Oh, duh. I parsed what you said completely wrong, I thought you were asking where to find the dye because you might have wasted it. Once you make the red light boxes, you're supposed to set them in the bar yourself.

So on a non-builders note, I hadn’t ever really played many early DQs aside from 5 so I got 3,4, and 6 for my phone. I lost interest in 3 a bit after getting the boat (its great for what it is but its still a very old-school 8 bit rpg), so I tried 4.
I have to say I really love the idea of introducing the party members in their own little 2-5 hour adventures. Its such a great change from the usual RPG convention of meeting some random person, having a brief conversation, and them dropping their lives to become your bff party member forever.
Torneko's (Taloon's) chapter might break you of that. It depends on how long you're willing to play shopkeeper. When I originally played it on the NES, this was my favourite chapter, because no other game really let you be a shopkeeper. Now? There's a few dozen apps for that, and countless Steam shovelware games.
The shopkeeper gameplay in DQ4 is the barest of content handling, but there's only one reason to keep up with it - you can get a Cautery Sword (best weapon for his chapter) really early on, but you need 3,500 gold to afford it. You can either keep working for commissions, or hope you get a bunch of lucky drops from random monsters to sell equipment to make the money for it. I usually work, but I won't lie in saying that you could fall asleep doing it because it's such a braindead way of doing it.
Eh I just skipped the cautery sword. By the time it truly becomes relevant you can just buy one in Mintos. The biggest issue I had with chapter 3 is that they never hinted that steel broadswords and iron armor would be important later, that would have probably saved me a good 30 mins of grinding because I had sold a lot of them for cash by that point.

That's what I figured, and yet light boxes are not a part of the gold bar blueprint. So I don't know if I'm blind, or if I'm wrong about it being a light box to dye, or what, and it seems so out of character for the game to have no quest character to ask to confirm what I should do.

Ugh, figured it out. The villagers put their blueprint supply chest floating in the air so they couldn't do anything.
Did you guys use any fortifications on the “monster” side of Khrumbul-dun? I’m hoping the hammer doods can’t smash iron blocks...
I ended up making an iron wall with a gate. Worked well. Before that it was an adobe wall with a bramble moat. Monsters just ran into the moat and bashed the wall/ground/everything.
I do kinda miss how the first game had more of a focus on base defense. I've done the first 2 story islands and so far the only things I can do are build a wall or dig a trench.
I also felt like minecarts were more convenient in the first game.
I really hope the inevitable third game further redefines the QOL improvements of DQB2 but revisits some of the things the first game did better.
So this is fun. I seem to have gotten myself permanently stuck in Buildnocular mode. Clicking L3 will not toggle back out. It persists through save/reload/game restart... I even swapped controllers to see if there was a mechanical problem. No dice.
It's R3 to go between 1st and 3rd person. L3 to toggle Builder's Eye on and off. But I've actually tried mashing every button to try and get out of it and nothing works.
Is that on the PS4 or Switch version? We should be getting a patch soon with the August 20 update, so you might get a fix on it soon?
If there is going to be a DQB3, I hope they expand on interactions with some individual items.
Also, casino. I want to make a casino themed room/building. Let us build slots, a poker table, maybe a tombola wheel, or Treasures and Trapdoors. Yeeeessss...

Barricades work well, you can collect them across the map.

Did the update fall everywhere, or just to PS4 yesterday?
Just wait. I really hated the long sequence between islands 2 and 3. It seems to be a really antiquated representation of the worst aspects of JRPG story padding.
I just assumed the miners were closeted gay men. They keep talking about how hot Babs is to keep up appearances of stereotypical masculinity, but they really just want a big group bedroom for all the guys to share, a place for them to hang out and work on their physiques together, and a room to rub each other down after a hard day.

Yeah. The "relaxation room" that had to include a bed and a towel pretty much sealed the deal for me.
They actually specify that the group bedroom has to be small enough that they are forced to rub their muscly bodies against each other. That was good, as was Babs's dad eagerly volunteering to wear the fishnets and do the dancing so that she doesn't have to, and being really bummed that he won't get to wear them when she says she'll do it after all.
That doesn't really change how gross I find the incessant drooling over Babs. Whether it's genuine shitty masculinity or performative shitty masculinity, I still have this shitty text in there. Even the golem drools over her.
Well, I'm honestly not the biggest Dragon Quest fan, largely because I just don't like Akira Toriyama's art style all that much, but I've heard tons of great things about XI so I just downloaded the demo and also used my last remaining coupon to buy the full version. Pleasantly surprised the full game is only about 13 GB.
Dragon quest is great. I’m not a fan of Dragon Ball at all, so I didn’t even know who Toriyama was when I first played DQ5 on DS. I never really thought the art was anything but charming.
I’ve liked all the games I have played (though I still haven’t had the patience to finish 1-3 because they are pretty old school and barebones on story), but DQ 5 is right up there with Chrono Trigger and FF6 for me.
Wasn't there supposed to be an update that added "hairstyles" and more save slots?
For DQB2? Yeah it was yesterday. There's a few more hairstyles, 3 save slots, and a bunch of other stuff.
Weird. It says I'm on the latest version, but I still only have one manual save slot, and while I heard the hairstyles would be treated as hats, I can't find any at the dressing table.

On the Switch it is live at least, dunno about PS4. Should be 1.7

Maybe I need to be further in the story or something.

I don't know what's happening with your save slots but everything else from the new update is deep post-game only.
Hm, I'm actually not sure if I'll play the demo right now. If I play it now, I'll probably have forgotten a good deal about it by next month. Also, more importantly, I simply don't have time to play it right now. Ideally, I wanna finish my second playthrough of Fire Emblem, Astral Chain and Link's Awakening before DQ 11 comes out, which is already gonna be quite a challenge, even without putting 5+ hours into the demo.

that's also an okay approximation of old-timey small mining towns
