Don't be fooled by the trailer above though, while it may look like a standard beat-'em-up game, it has a surprisingly long list of assorted side gameplay that you'll go through.
The game has been getting universal praise for it's combat accessability and side-mission gameplay. Listen to Polygon's Chris Plante describe the game in his review:
"Astral Chain is an action game for beginners," Plante said. "The default difficulty mode favors story over challenge; the more difficult "Pt Standard" option, also available from the start, provides plenty of items to keep my character's health maxed and their powers buffed. Ever wanted to try an action game like Bayonetta or Nier: Automata, but found the difficulty intimidating? Astral Chain is the answer."
Key to this is an innovative combat system that pairs the protagonist -- a detective in a post-apocalyptic future under attack by chimeras from a separate realm -- with a "Legion," a tame chimera attached to you by a chain.
Plante added: "I don't have to memorize complicated combos that require precisely timed button inputs; my supercop delivers attacks with one button... The most intimidating move on paper -- controlling the two characters mid-combat to weaponize the chain that binds them together -- is surprisingly the most simple in action. It's like maneuvering two humanoid crafts in a twin-stick shooter.
"Which isn't to say that longtime action fans won't have enough to do. The game has depth -- just not at the expense of accessibility."

Wooooo! Gonna caffeine up and play many hours today.
Gonna try to play the game using only the doggo/big sword for combat. I know it's not how the game is meant to be played but I love playing specific set-ups in games and I don't want to use anything but doggo pal.
Seriously though, very excited for this one. Now I just need W101 ported over for the complete Platinum awesomeness package.

I just got it and I'm going to take a break tonight just to see this in action then finish it up real quick this weekend before coming back to this.
Just buy all the games. Best decisions.
Sadly, as it is my Switch backlog already extends to the moon, so I am limited to one game per month for the rest of my human existence.
But as soon as i catch some sleep oh man i am going to pet all the dogs.
Because honestly, it's hard to say which of the two I'd rather be forced to deal with.

You name the one you play and the one you don't play becomes the Akira of your game. They are not both supposed to be named Akira.

Woah. That is a really weird limitation.
I mean, I know, but that leaves both characters with Schrödinger's name. They may or may not be named Akira until the player chooses a character and the wave form collapses.
Pfft, not with that attitude they're not.
Meanwhile there are us galaxy brains naming our Garnet Garnet instead of Dagger.
Also \o/ that exploration theme music.
I will totally name my main charter Akira.

The Japanese cheat by loading two sounds onto a single character. They aren't very good at acknowledging that in international releases.
To be clear, the legion can get as close as it wants. It means the player character needs to stand back.
