there was a mage in my guild in the original vanilla wow who genuinely hadn't thought of the idea of starting a new cast as soon as the previous one finished. He would always wait until the spell hit the target, then start it.
this kind of thing isn't earthshattering on an individual level but multiply it across forty people and you've got a substantial increase in raid output.
even something like knowledge of just how significant consumables are is contributing right now - most of the dungeon groups I've been with everyone is carrying a modest supply of health and mana potions so nobody is entirely reliant on the healer to keep themselves alive, which means you can often just rush in and kill mobs before they kill you, even in a chaotic situation, rather than maintaining a carefully stable and safe pace of combat.
man i'm late to the party but regarding running around. the shaman water totem quest sends you back and forth between kalimdor and EK ...TWICE
The paladin level 20 weapon quest sends you to Deadmines, BFD and SFK. SFK in particular is pretty nutso since it involves running through level 30+ PvP areas. I thought I was going to hate it but it was huge fun. All the trekking around as a lowbie really does make it feel like a big scary world out there.

And more importantly, because open world combat is actually dangerous in a way, and slow, pushing through a multi-hour quest like the Verigan's Fist chain you refer to actually has a meaningful payoff, because that weapon is going to drastically increase your open world power for at least the next 15-20 levels, and because that 15-20 levels is probably 30-40 hours of gameplay, you'll actually get to enjoy it!
The same applies to running a dungeon and getting a cool drop like Emberstone Staff from Deadmines, or Sulthraze from Zul'farrak. The journey to max level is a long one, and open world combat is lengthy and involved, so you actually get an opportunity to notice the power increase and also enjoy it for a reasonable period of time.
Compare to retail where even if a quest like Verigan's Fist existed, why would you bother doing a quest for 3 hours at level 25 to get a really good level 20 weapon when in 3 hours you can already be nudging level 40? Why would you be excited about a dungeon drop when you'll get to use it for a couple of hours before its outlevelled?

Leveling dungeons were NEVER hard in Vanilla. You were just on average usually touting 2-3 outright terrible players (by no fault of their own, they were new to a new game). The average player in Classic is so far above what you likely had leveling up back then its incomparable.
Even back then I could see how the dungeons really were not taxing us as much as they could be. People stuck true to the roles and had tons of requirements, but in all honesty 2h warriors, shaman, and pets could all handling tanking with a shadow priest healer and it would be fine if they all just thought critically about their options. Pulling right helps too, often times the difference between a smooth and garbage run is if ANYONE in the group (doesn't have to be the tank even) can pull without getting adds or double pulls.
I think it takes till around 55ish dungeons to actually require some structure and legit specs to survive. Before then, in all honesty if you played right you could complete all those dungeons with zero talent points.

Got my first taste of Alliance blood today. Was running to Wailing Caverns with the level 19 Hunter in my group we we saw a 23 Warrior running out of the cave. Me, a level 17 Shaman and the Hunter could not resist so we set him to the graveyard.
I was kind of hoping we would find more Alliance as we were running to the instance.

On my undead priest there was a human mage trying to burn Brill down but it was funny to watch 4 guards and about 30 people in the single digits take them down

I feel like the bolded bit is underappreciated. Everything pre-60 is there as a training ground. There really aren't any gear checks or you-must-bring-this-perfect-party-composition fights. The dungeons just gradually teach you how to deal with mechanics.

Something does still feel off. I'm not sure what it is.
It's probably 15 years of playing wow but everything feels easy. Sure we still wipe in dungeons but I remember gnomer taking much longer than 30 minutes too.
I'm pretty sure this is pure and simple everyone just having gotten better at playing MMORPGs, like any video game you remember being challenging when you were younger feeling strangely easier when you go back to replay it a decade or two later.
I think this is where I am with this as well. Like I have multiple thousands of hours more experience in WoW now than I did 15 years ago, and even more if you start to include understanding games in general.
Latency and even discord are HUGE compared to the garbage we used to put up with.
I dunno. The Pagle Alliance discord is still garbage thanks to @bowen

hit 30 last night... the meat of the game for me starts at 35, I can't wait
i kind of messed up my leveling talents big time though and boxed myself hard into dual wield... so even if I got a nice 2H now, my build would totally squander it
but there's plenty of great slow-swing-speed 1H weapons in the lowbie dungeons right? (checks wowhead...) oh............ oh.........................

First respec is a gold in classic, that's not cheap for a lot of players.
I would like some money because these are artisanal nuggets of wisdom philistine.
Yeah someone in our guild mentioned having 90 gold last night and that pretty much makes them the Warren Buffet of WoW Classic right there.
Like, gifting each other 8-10 silver to help out is a regular thing, because it's necessary. Sending items to each other through the mail, while using the C.O.D. option is also a regular thing, because you just don't have the money to send mail.
I am smiling while typing all of this. I love all of this.
Trying to make money on Auction house right now sounds completely un fun
Eh it's not too bad. I've got my tailoring up to 250+ by buying cloth and then making bags to resell. I've made a profit or broke even on everything. I'm just two levels away from my mount so I need to make like 60 more gold before that happens.
I think I'm up to about 18g at level 30.
I made about 5g through the upper section of 1k needles, especially killing (and pickpocketing) centaurs for the quest and selling just about anything that I don't need. The centaurs are pretty rich in greys so it makes for some decent grinding. The fact that you have to kill over 2 dozen of them for a quest is just icing on the gravy. Really only convenient for Horde, of course.
I just hit level 40 and I've got my mount! I was actually a little short on gold, but my friend gave me some. He's playing warlock, which apparently means he gets mount for 1g.
My memory was that it was cheaper than 1g, but I would say 1g should be doable by the time the allocation of your talent points is actually making a difference, unless you've been blowing it on the AH. Should be especially doable if you take some of that cloth you've been picking up, or the leather/ore/herbs you've gathered, and sell a bit on the AH.
Some may not have it naturally, but you should be able to get it and it'd be worth the effort if your talents are the difference between "ugh, this kinda sucks" and "oh, this works!"

I’ve been auctioning green drops I don’t need, or need the DE mats from, but I’m barely breaking even or making small profits after the AH cut. I should just vendor them and move on I guess.

even if I perfectly AHed everything I ever got, I don't think I would be close to that amount. MAYBE 10g. maybe
Dont make attempts to corner a market unless you have the capital to make a play for it.
You need to be able to hold a market for about a week to make the market shift and accept your price.
With that one player putting it up for 1g40s, but it and put it up for your price. When it sells, you still made 60s minus mail and auction fees.
I could write an economics course on wow auctioning....
I know this, I just assumed with only 2 on the AH, it'd be relatively easy to reset the market price, but then someone put up like 12 of the things and that's too big a risk for me to try for at the moment.
I just don't understand why people cut the price so ridiculously hard. Retained memory in an addon from last time? Just saying to themselves "nah that'll never sell" and picking an arbitrary lower number? I don't get it!
The AH on horde Fairbanks is a mess. Do people not look to see how much something sells to a vendor for and how much it costs to list something? I've finding a ton of stuff i can buy and sell to a vendor at a profit. I mean...i'm not doing it on everything because i get that sometimes people list things as a way to help others but its crazy. I had some gems that i would have to list at 2 silver under what i could sell to a vendor to get them to move...this is insane!
Is there an add on like TSM or whatever that will actually scan for underpriced stuff to flip? I’m using Auctionator and I haven’t found such a functionality in there.

I never bothered buying gear on the auction house in original vanilla but I’ve had pretty good luck checking in occasionally to see if someone has massively underpriced a green drop. Yesterday I bought a 15% increase to my armor, 15 stamina, and ~5 strength and spirit for about 90 silver. Buying the exact same pieces from other sellers could have run me over 3 gold.
Is there an add on like TSM or whatever that will actually scan for underpriced stuff to flip? I’m using Auctionator and I haven’t found such a functionality in there.
It's not quite that, but Vendor Prices adds the vendor price to tooltips of items and you can see it on items on AH.
If there’s something that can find stuff that vendors for more than the buyout, that’s gotta be easy money. But then it just takes one person to lock that whole racket down.

I am on Mankrik but have AH'd very little. I've only gotten a handful of silver from auctioning some Tangy Clam Meat and nothing else significant that I can recall.
I could be misremembering on how much I have, but it's within a couple gold of 18g I believe. I've also been really stingy on learning profession recipes (only the required ones for skillups) and class abilities (I still have 8-10 I haven't learned); only buying them from UC for the faction discount. I did have to drop 4.5g on artisan skinning, which stung at the time (I have been holding onto all of my leather though).
I don't really feel like I've been doing anything special outside of pickpocketing most humanoids I kill though. Maybe I have been lucky, or just happen to have focused a lot of mobs with deep loot tables.
I've been all over leveling and doing dungeons as I go as well, so that may have something to do with it.
