Hey, how do you guys go about cleaning dust off your toys? Sometimes I'll run a swiffer around them, but I feel like that doesn't get all the nooks and crannies.
Does compressed air work well? My stuff is getting dusty as well
In my experience, no. It'll blow off some of the dust, but it tends to go everywhere and it doesn't get enough of it. I have cleaned a lot of lego models, gunpla, and transformers with an old soft pastry brush from our kitchen.
I clean my various models twice a year, because even though we live in a wet climate (Houston), our dogs tend to bring in a lot of stuff from outside.
Have a terrible photo (Shouldn't have gone for the low angle)
Thoughts
-Mothra is TINY, which is a little galling given she's the same price as the other two. (Originally she was going to come with a Larva figurine, but Toho appparently nixed it). She's so small I was scared to try and get her out of the plastic she was wedged in. Articulation isn't as good as I'd like (wings don't rotate or go back/foward) but the figure is so small I'm not surprised. Otherwise she's pretty great, though I wish her stand had a hole so I could put it on the stands I got. Feels tiny bit flimsy otherwise, with those huge ass wings.
-Rodan is pretty cool, I don't have a LOT to say about him, though his wing joints are the tightest. Also I wish he was able to posed in walking mode, but ah well. Comes with an alternate, closed-mouth head instead of an articulated mouth, probably due to size issues. Also I could not get that display rod to stand straight, for the life of me.
-Godzilla, surprisingly, had no joint issues, they were all able to be bent pretty easily out of the package. I was surprised. You can do some stupid stuff with the articulation, but he kinda only has the one viable pose unless you want to use a stand. I wish his tail curled more given how many joints it has. Also the mouth doesn't look that stupid in person, I swear!
Overall, Godzill and Rodan are pretty good. Had Mothra been a like $15 instead of $22, she's be great too, but as in she's a lot of money for not a lot of plastic, especially compared to Godzilla's bulk, or that bigass base that Rodan comes with.
Sad Ghidorah is apparently just too big to justify making. Curious if they'll ever get to the US-made titans. I'd love a toy of that spider squid.
I just got this in today, so had to transform it to make sure it isn't broken and free of defects. It is really awesome and I have to say worth the money. The amount of folding, twisting, turning, etc. is insane! It is not even close to any previous Masterpiece I own. I'm going to take more pictures later to share, but wanted to post this now.
Yeah it is really crazy. This was the first Masterpiece that I had to watch a video to figure out how to transform him. The instructions were somewhat vague in spots that confused me. I'm honestly afraid of transforming him back now since there are so many things that could go wrong. Plus forgetting a fold here or there.
That said, it really is awesome to handle it in person since it looks like an action figure in robot form. Apparently it has a ton of flexibility to allow him to be posed in a bunch of positions.

Yeah, there were so many tiny pieces moving on tiny joints. I think I'd never want to transform this without following step-by-step instructions. It also makes me wonder what the longevity of something like this is. How will the plastic hold up over time? How will the little metal rods in the joints hold up? Certainly a model that sits on the shelf forever would have a very different lifespan from one that gets handled and posed all the time, but still - we live in an fallible physical world where entropy is the only law.
This nihilistic post is brought to you by boxes of ruined childhood toys that I had to throw out while packing for a move last week. I had to throw out so many favorite toys from the 90s that my heart ached. Literally everything that had that rubbery soft plastic could just immediately go in the trash can, because by this point it was sticky at best, soft at worst; the skirt on my Ronin Warriors Ryo actually had beads of some liquid on it that I was too afraid to investigate in any detail. This was in a box surrounded by other toys (which didn't have the liquid on them), so I have to assume the plastic broke down enough that stuff started seeping out of it.
All the Transmetal 2 Beast Wars toys had chrome that was flaking to a greater or lesser extent. The Transmetal 1 toys were mostly fine, strangely, but poor Rattrap, one of my all-time favorites, couldn't be saved.
Every one of my TMNT Mutations toys (the transforming ones: Mutations, Road Ready Mutations, Mighty Mutations) either had sticky rubbery plastic, hard plastic that felt greasy, or both. I loved those so much.
To be fair, I didn't exactly take the best care of them in the last ~10 years; they pretty much just sat in cardboard boxes that weren't in climate-controlled rooms, and NYC summers can get pretty hot and humid. I don't really know how much I could have done to preserve them for longer, short of expensive climate-control. My guess is that inexpensive children's toys aren't really engineered to last for 20 years, but I keep wondering if it's my fault that those things got so degraded.
How do you folks store your little plastic dollies? Do you take any special care to shield them from the elements, or do you just accept that one day they will have to be tossed?
To be honest I think this guy will actually stand up to being transformed and posed a lot. Nothing compared to the mainline toys of course, but it should hold up. The plastic feels the same as my other Tomy Takara and Hasbro Masterpieces.
I currently have all of my old Star Wars figures, Transformers, Machine Robos all bagged in sandwich baggies so they don't touch each other and in boxes in a bedroom closet that doesn't get that hot. I haven't looked at them in about 8 years or so but I'm guessing they are still safe. The rest of my childhood toys are still at my parents' house so no idea if they have degraded. I do know that my poor GameCube controller is going gummy along with my old PS1 controllers. Which is hilarious to me since my old Atari 2600 controllers are fine.
Fair enough - but a creeping growth, mindless and omnipresent, without intent but with direction, consuming the very sunlight to live, sounds even more Lovecraftian to me.
Gonna go with the Predaking. My desire for the Rainmakers has to do with wanting to collect the full seeker set, and until I can source Red Wing (without shady shit or opening credit cards) I can pass.
Omega Supreme is in my pile of loot... To ship now or wait for other stuff to come in...
I luckily decided to hold off on picking up Omega Supreme for now. Which is a good thing since it seems that I have non-stop toys showing up at my house lately.

I watched a video review of Omega Supreme, and wow is he a big boy. The rocket part was maybe 3/4 the length of the reviewer's arm.
Omega Supreme is one of those toys that I've always dreamed about, but getting the original was basically never a possibility. This model looks like a really awesome modern version, but I absolutely do not have the space for him.
I currently have Fortress Maximus, Predaking and Trypticon standing on the floor in front of my shelving where all of my Transformers and Star Wars stuff is on display. They are all just too tall to display on a shelf. Luckily I have Devastator on the top shelf with my Masterpieces since he sort of fits with their scale. I'm planning on Omega Supreme joining the floor crew as soon as I pick one up.

My melting toys reminded me of this Twitter thread (spoilered for length of 7 tweets):
I'm not saying that action figures are a vector for a distributed Lovecraftian horror, but.

On yours, maybe.

I have the Predaking. It is neat, but man is it huge.

Though Omega Supreme is out soon.
Won't they both be hard since the Rainmakers set is a Target exclusive?

Predaking is older and will likely be harder to aquire in the future.
How to take a George Carlin skit and make it eye-rollingly Millennial in a mere 7 tweets
It never crossed my mind either. However in hindsight literally everything else has millennials attached to it, why not this?
