Was Sinister always goofy like that? The only version of him I ever encountered prior to Gillen's run was the 90s cartoon.

I also really don't remember any Sinister aside from 90s cartoon. Can someone tldr what his deal is since the X-Men from the past got brought to this time?

Originally, he's a mastermind scientist who was way into mutant genetics and manipulated Cyclops to have him conceive a super mutant kid

Wasn't a Sinister plotline where we originally got the "3rd Summers brother" thing that lasted like a decade?

Sinister definitely was hinting at it in the 90s.

It started with Sinister though. The speculation began when Sinister told Cyclops that there was a third Summers brother, and then like ten years later he was actually introduced with Deadly Genesis.

    Oh, fair enough I guess

It was originally supposed to be Adam X, but Fabian Nicieza left the book before revealing it and it got dropped.

It was also supposed to be Apocalypse at one point, and Gambit at another.

Part of the thing is that, between his name and his character design, I've never been able to take "Mr. Sinister" seriously in the first place. So making him a figure of outright farce is not that much of a stretch, for me.

The thing is, he has had good character designs too

But they're not "comic book villain" designs, they're the ones where he is just wearing a suit

Like, white skinned dude wearing a suit named Nathaniel Essex who is an immortal mutant and kind of also Dr Frankenstein ain't a bad angle

Fun fact: The original concept for Mr. Sinister is that he was a psychic projection created by a kid that Scott used to be friends with at the orphanage where he grew up.

Has it mostly been Hickman that is showing Apocalypse as a more heroic type in the past? I feel like maybe he's quietly putting in the groundwork for something there.

He has, yeah, there is a big Apocalypse revelation in this issue in particular.

It also looks like, between this and his MC#1000 story, that he is going to be introducing
the original Four Horseman that Apocalypse had back in ye olde times

Apparently Robert E. Howard's estate is happy with the Conan deal with Marvel, as they have entered a new agreement that will bring other Howard creations to Marvel Comics including Solomon Kane and Dark Agnes. The latter of which I have never heard of and has a very funny name.

Re Sinister and Claremont's intend for him to be a mental creation by a kid: Originally there was also supposed to be a heroic counterpart.

It's one of those concepts that Claremont has been desperately trying to include in comics like the idea that hero X is not a human with animal powers, but an animal turned into a human (his original idea for both Wolverine and Spiderwoman) or the idea of a separate strain of human evolution that is not the X-Men and their usual cast.

The rights to Conan and Howard's other creations are not controlled by Howard's estate (if there even is such a thing left, he had no children or spouse). The way the rights to those characters have been passed on and on from his father to friends to family of friends to different companies is a pretty fascinating read.

Oh dang the article I read painted it as such but yeah at the end it says the rights are apparently held by a company titled Conan Properties

Reading Invaders this week, I definitely think that the HoXPoX theory that
the villain of the books is Charles

In Invaders it was revealed a while ago that Charles tried to help Namor back in the day and made everything worse and then tried to cover up his mistake

And now it has all escalated to a gigantic multinational disaster and Charles is blamed for it by like 3 different heroes

I don't think editorial would have signed off on that if they weren't already planning a heel turn for him anyways

I am real bummed to report the issues I had with Gwenpool Strikes Back #1 are just as prevalent, if not moreso, in #2.

I've liked Leah Williams work quite a bit in the past but this book is just unfiltered Very Online Bullshit at full blast with an extra layer of fourth wall breaking meta commentary and it just doesn't work for me at all

Which sucks, but oh well it definitely feels like Williams is telling the story she wants to tell and I'm happy for her on that level at least even if it ain't a story I like
