It means it is used in two different answers (such that you can use one answer to confirm the other)
So US crosswords are like that? Huh. So do they not have many blank spaces then? I feel like getting that many words to match up when designing a crossword would be complicated.

It's a different challenge, in a way, because you gotta make everything interlock. They're definitely tough to design, and that's why you see stuff like epee and oboe and Eire showing up all the time, as you're often in some sort of vowel shortage.

They often have really obscure clues that are 1-2 words and require you to go back and forth over them getting a couple more with each pass until you can fill it all in at once. It's just a different kind of challenge.

I am rarely able to finish NYT Thursday-Sunday (without resorting to looking up any of the clues). They're tricky. Today's is actually one of the easier Friday ones they've done in a long time, the last few months have been just a death march.

basically it can be filled either horizontally or vertically. One clue acts as a 'check' on the other. American crosswords have a thing about having all squares be 'checked' so if you get stumped you can always get it from another angle.
I got like 4 answers. But I really suck at crosswords.
I prefer codewords, where you don't have any clues but each letter is marked with a corresponding number. So it's about knowing the structure of words rather than deciphering how somebody else thinks.
I can usually do the Monday NYT puzzle in less than 10 minutes, sometimes less than 5. Tuesday usually takes a bit longer. Wednesday, maybe a half hour. When Thursday hits, I start to struggle with how long it takes.
