The Wheel of Time adaption had the chance to work. I heard they canned it because the script writers wanted to take out huge parts of briad tugging and sniffing, and Robert Jordan refused. This resulted in the projected episode length being too long for viability.
HBO still has Curb and The Wire. And The Wire is the best tv show ever made, but it is on the last season now (just started).
But Showtime has Californication, Weeds, and Dexter. Plus the L word, although I've only watched one ep of that, seems decent though.
I wish there was a TV forum, just so I could go talk about The Wire for weeks on end.
Also, I was really looking forward to this series. If there was a group of people that had the ability to not cock this one up, I'd say it was HBO.
You should make a post on The Wire, then. Fill it with links, info, and pictures, and maybe you'll score some converts.
I've only ever heard good things about The Wire, but I didn't tune in because I didn't know what the fuck was going on every time I flipped past it... it just looked a little like The Shield without the awesomeness that is Vic Mackey.

I'm in the same boat as Drama - I want to watch the Wire, but I haven't had the wherewithall to start at the beginning. I'm sure I will some day.
I've got the first season of the Wire and I've a few hours to kill in the campus center before my friend gets out of class and we go see Juno, so I might watch a few episodes.
The Wire seasons can actually be watched independently from each other if you need to, but you definitely get more out of it if you start from Season 1. I watched Season 4 before I saw anything else and I thought it was the best season of television I had ever seen.
The general consensus on the awesomeness of seasons tends to be: 4 > 1 > 2 > 3
I'm really excited to see what happens with bubs this season. And lots of other shit of course, but it's the last season, so I'm expecting good things.
This thread is totally off course, but The Wire is an excellent show because it isn't just a cop show. Sure some of the main characters are cops, but depending on the season they aren't the main focus at all.

These are the guys who flamed The West Wing into the ground because every comment the show made was "about TWoP and our staunch criticism of the show."
It is probably the most self-absorbed web-based community I have ever seen. Even more so than ours.

Yeah, I seriously would never point someone towards TWOP. You know, unless I hated them.

All the same, their posters are detail observant and they have a fairly high level of writing quality, which I appreciate. Their attitude does suck sometimes; that's why I haven't made an account.
Honestly, it's hard to find a better place for learning miniscule details about a show you like, and maybe a few snarky quips. Official show forums tend to have lowest common denominators as posters.

Given Aaron Sorkin's noted superiority complex, and not really having any context beyond what's presented here, I have little trouble imagining that he did indeed add little digs at TWoP.

The L Word might be the most watchable bad show of all time.
Seriously, almost nothing on that show makes sense and the showrunners basically admit that the whole thing is fanservice. People get together and break up without a lot of logic, and they get some pretty serious preachiness in (the last season introduced a lesbian soldier, which opened the door to quite a lot of anti-Bush rhetoric, for example). It suffers from a lot of the same problems as Queer as Folk (US).
That said, the show is still watchable because there's really nothing on TV like it, the actresses are appealing (and diverse, they give a job to deaf actress Marlee Matlin, which I give them mad props for), and some of the softcore porn (make no mistake, it is...) on the show is hotter than direct-to-video sex stuff.
Now that I think about it, Leisha Hailey from that show would probably make a good Cersei Lannister. Unlike Julie Benz, I wouldn't give Jack or Shit if she left her current show to do it, either.
Yeah I love the L word, and not just for the delectable sarah shahi.
Also corroborate the people saying The Wire is awesome, because it is. I'm only partway through the first season and I'm already loving it. I don't think it's addictive like 24 but it's damn good.
Instead spend every waking moment at www.georgerrmartin.com, reading his not-a-blog, like I've started doing. Seriously, I'm about ready to add it to one of my Opera sessions just so I don't forget to check every day.
Martin says that readers of his website will be the third to know after his agent and publisher.
While I am generally in favor of writers taking the time they need to get things right, there comes a point where the guy should just sit down at his damn typewriter and pound something out. What's he got to lose by just choosing a path and going with it? He can always go back later before its published and change, and he might come up with something he likes by accident.
Then again, the guy's published more than I ever will, so I suppose he doesn't need my advice.
Every time someone says The Wire is the best show ever made (and that happens quite a lot), I just can't believe them. It's a fucking cop show.
I clearly need to watch it to prove myself wrong.
This is exactly how I had felt about it too. One of my friends was all over me to watch this. Usually he just like quirky stuff. But I had been hearing increasingly high praise for it recently so I gave it it go.
I actually started on the third season. It really blew me away. I immediately went back and watched the prior two seasons. It just makes every other show out there seem so small and insignificant. I also recommend that you try and watch 3-4 episodes at a time, if possible. The story arcs can be complex and seeing it over several episodes at once helps a lot.
I'm just a bit over halfway through the first season
The Wire is amazing.
And I loved the bit in one of the early episodes where they're investigated the dead crime scene, and eventually find the bullet in the fridge. It takes them like seven minutes and the only word they say during the search is fuck. And they talk constantly.

So did I, actually. There would be an episode before every new episode of Deadwood, so I gave it a chance. I was completely lost for a lot of it, but I'm so glad I did. Even with it being so complicated, and me not knowing two seasons worth of backstory, it all came together at the end of the season in such a beautiful way.
Despite some things being spoiled, I'm almost glad I started there so I could see just how damn complex and wonderful it got, since that season added the Carcetti/political viewpoint.

Oh, and Heath Ledger for Jaime Lannister.
I am reminded of the special features on Hot Fuzz, where Kevin Smith was at the Jersey showing, and took part in the Q&A afterwards. He said he was just telling them to power through, because they were going for like two years on the script. "Just power through man, just sit down and do it!" And then he makes Jersey Girl...and they make Hot Fuzz.

No other progress has been made.
If you cut out all the fluff, it would have been an episode.
Okay maybe that's not totally fair. 3 episodes. Tops.
Awesome show. And another reason why Showtime is awesome.

I second that. I haven't made an account for the TWOP forums, but I do enjoy reading their views of the shows.

And Omar is the most baddass character ever.

Last time I browsed TWOP forums I grew breasts from all the estrogen in the air. That was embarrasing.
Munch is going to be in this season. (Allegedly)

So, when is Dance supposedly to be released?

Man Heath Ledger would have been cool.
Oh well.
