honestly i can't really stand Arena because at the end of the day magic is a social experience for me

the rapport over the game as we play it is essential
Turns out soullessly grinding at leaderboards is an unfulfilling experience.

Yeah but in arena I don’t need to spend 300 bucks to make a deck I like.

Humor can be dissected as a frog can, but dies in the process.

All the decks I like get rolled in Copper though.
At least in paper I can talk with my opponent whilst they crush me.

Basically arena just finally forced me to come to terms with the fact that I basically only like dumb, bad deck, kitchen table Magic.

i use arena to practice paper when I am not at paper events which makes it extra frustrating when you are stonewalled by lack of rare wildcards

I dunno, the shitty brews I come up with usually can get me to gold at least.

Yeah, arena is where i will build a $bant$ deck. Paper will probably be mono red or something until i can get a hold of some questing beast, brazen borrowers, or murderous riders to mess with something else. Im kind of thinking i should make some GB monstrosity with assassins trophy and casualties of war and just blow up everything. Just need some way to get then back.

I understand blue/white/black forms of control are fun to PLAY and probably good for the game as a whole but jezzy creezy are they unfun to play against. I don't know if it would be better in paper where I could at least talk to the person I'm not really playing magic with or not.

It really depends on the deck. Most mid range decks you are a dog in that race and there’s not much you can do about it but man I love ripping my opponent to pieces with an aggressive deck while they waste their time.

field is just not fun to play against, like a lot of the cards in the format

i can't interact with it in any way so there's nothing i can do to change the board state once they have it out. they're inevitably just going to get a free zombie every turn forever and i have to deal with that

Yeah, the thing with Field of the Dead is that the FoD decks don't need to split their cards between "create threats" and "setup things". Damn near all their cards can be Grab Land Put Land, because the very act of ramping also gets them the board presence they need to survive. So while I may have a Flame Sweep or a Legion's end, it's two or three cards in a deck of sixty, so when I draw it I need to be able to finish the game right there, or next turn there'll be four zombies back in the field and I won't have more answers to them.

    Steam ID: Right here.

I’m kind of just killing time in Arena waiting for Brawl to launch, that feels more my jam than Standard. I really enjoyed the brief Brawl event and playing around with building different brawl decks around various commanders seems fun (and also cheaper as I tend to have a lot of 1-of rares, it’s crafting 3 more that kills me.)

What, who'd wanna talk to a Blue/White control player? :P

I think my ideal arena format would be one where its just pure precon deck vs precon deck

Edit mostly because I'm very lazy and I have the most fun in magic when the decks feel like they're on par with each other

On the other hand, nothing but precons could get me to uninstall and never look back. Making decks is what magic is to me, playing is just how you test your creations.

The power level issue is a big one for me, because there is just no way to enforce things. You need a safe space to try janky decks like making as many copies of seven dwarves as possible, but equally you need a place to test pilot your new Spike pile to optimize your play for ranked, and you can't make 2 queues for that as people would just cheat it anyway so you shuffle those people together and they both waste their time half the time. And that's also the place to go to bust out some quests, which at least ups the jank a little. Meanwhile ranked is srs bzns and that's fine. But events give the dual message of "silly fun with alternative rules!" And "pay an entry fee and try hard to win prizes to recoup that value, because wtf is fun even worth if it's not a progression system!"
All built on the back of a fundamentally gambling based model.

All in all it reminds me why I like single box board games so much, but the addictive loops and level of personal choice involved in MTG will always have me coming back from time to time.

(Disclaimer I realize the above is really me working through some things about how I play things and as someone who also dabbles in destiny and Diablo I'm well aware of the hypocrite I am.)

Yeah usually when I have a good game against Flash it’s when I have good instants to play on their turn and make them spend their counter mana. A card that says “here’s how many spells I’ll be casting this turn and btw don’t worry about your turn, I won’t do anything” must be like easy mode for Flash.

I just want it as a mode, deck building is absolutely the core of magic I just dont usually feel like putting in the energy and I also don't enjoy feeling like I'm getting blown up

This is me as well, but mostly what that means is grinding gold in an ever evolving format to scrape together funds for limited and hope to go hot. Then you have a format I kinda like get "solved" by weaponsmith and pull that or get crushed by it.

Typically you don't even get to that part of the game. After landing an early threat they waste several of their turns trying to land a Fires which you bounce/counter several times in a row.

Golos and/or route seem more likely. The last time they banned a land, it was 5 at once.

My guess is they're not 100% committed to banning Field (or something else in that deck) but will have it ready to go if MC results are what we expect.

Something in Paradoxical Outcome. What specifically depends on whether they want the deck to continue to exist or if they want to take it out back.

paradoxical isn't even an issue in modern, it is going to get restricted in vintage though
astrolabe is likely on the chopping block in modern and pauper if anything

yeah, I'd guess they're waiting, but I think it'll be circuitous that eats a ban

I'm in favor of aggressive experimentation with banning on mtga before paper, so they can very easily collect shitloads of data to determine greater effects

Banning it in standard won’t affect brawl.
