Besides, considering that you'll likely have to fight the same monster over and over again to get a particular set of gear, I like that you can get carried through the story levels, unlock all the monsters and their corresponding gear and then, once you have a fuller picture of what gear is available, make a more informed decision about who you want to go back and farm.
i'm on the cusp of MR 99 and just accidentally deleveled Wildspire because a bunch of jagras jumped on a downed odogaron and supercharged my swaxe amp combo
I know you can't specifically search for monsters until you've encountered them, but now that I'm MR70+ is it possible for me to just SOS and look for Brute Tigrex/Silver Rathalos, or do I need to just get lucky and encounter them first through other means first (like joining a higher level GL that spawns one)

Yeah, you can setup the SOS reqs, but I imagine those are all being snapped up within seconds (literally).
He dropped a savage jho investigation so I wanna see what kind of BS he's up to in MR.
I just did a Savage Jho capture tonight. The best part about hunting Jho is that he can’t I kill the monster you are trying to capture when he is the monster you are capturing.
Looking at the beginning, I was like "I thought GS was already hyper-aggressive and didn't use do the constant draws thing in MHW" and then I saw the slinger burst->TCS stuff and understood the reaction.
Coral Pukei Pukei. Now, apart from being an awful experience, the worst since the Sleep Mouse, which was the worst since they managed to make Tobis LESS enjoyable somehow, there appears to be absolutely no tell or warning to the jump/squirtgun combo. Which will one-shot you, since seems like the water does more damage at closer range.
This seems to be a problem when you're like, using a hammer, because why yes, in mid-swing he did repeatedly jump up and instantly cart me. Is there really no tell for that move, and also do the other subspecies actually get enjoyable to fight? Or am I stuck with "status effects, disables, and one-shots, combined with fucking off across the map every 12 seconds" until I get back to the new, presumably less-shitty, monsters?
Also seriously I have no idea how much HP these idiotic things have, but it's too much.
With a few sleep resist gems Sleepy Paolumu is just a different colored Paolumu.
I agree that Fulgur is super fun. Ebony Odo is a little different but they are both so jump crazy it's hard to notice. I had a blast with the mission that has you hunt both Odos. I'd like to see more where you have to get both variants at the same time.
Odo's fight is more about knowing where to dodge so that when his attack animation is done, you're in position to attack, so you have to wait for him to come to you. Chasing him will always be a fruitless endeavor.

Weird, I had the exact same thing happen, I wonder if it's something to do with Odogaron, or if it can happen to any monster Jho can pick up? Poor puppy almost got carried all the way down to the blue acid zone of the rotten vale before I resorted to flinching Jho with a slinger shot.

I think Coral is a good variant, as well as Tobi (As long as you carry poison resist). Sleepy Paolumu is the same boring fight but even worse.
Fulgur Anjanath is an absolute joy, Acidic Glav is very similar to regular Glav. Ebony Odo is also pretty much the same.
