Logan was really interesting basically throughout the 80s, then he kind of stagnated in the 90s for a while before he was refreshed in the 00s by writers like Jason Aaron.
I largely agree, but his interactions in the X-books with Jubilee are great, and he does leave the X-teams for a good three years or so, which was surprising at the time.
But good God he had his own ongoing, was guest starring in so much shit, and was just boring. 90s Wolverine has some good stuff in it, but a whole lot of bad.
I read a couple of issues of PAD's Hulk as part of my Fall of the Mutants read and that might be my post-Claremont deep dive
I didn't realize he wrote that book for, like, over a decade
Have you read any of his X-Factor runs? Both are mostly good, though have frustrating and/or objectionable stuff in both: the pretty racist Middle Eastern plotline (and crossover with Hulk) in the 90s run he had, and (in my opinion) the shitty ass baby dupe storyline in the 2000s run.
As a line-wide story it was...a little rocky. I think X-Factor came out of it best, as the Apocalypse stuff has been the best part of the book and they really got to put that front and center plus Archangel shows up for the first time which is fun.
UXM had some really nice moments and character beats but I just do not give a shit at all about Forge and Storm’s mystic powers and destiny and whatnot and that was a huge part of this whole deal so that didn’t really land great.
New Mutants ended really strong but man until Hodge showed up I was tuning the hell out. All of the Bird Brain and Animator stuff was both uninteresting and super bland and that was like 80% of it. But man
Magneto losing it when they tell him Doug died and lashing out at the kids was really, really well done. I just wish the rest of the story had been as weighty, even if it did provide a nice contrast.
I’m excited to keep going because I know lots of folks consider the Outback era/Inferno the best period of Claremont’s run so I’m hoping it lives up to the hype.
I've been reading the first couple trades of Powers; never read it before but it's pretty neat so far
it's weird how bendis has a pretty different voice; his marvel stuff tends to feel same-y no matter who he's writing and I assumed he just wasn't all that versatile about writing dialogue, but I guess it musta been a deliberate choice?
or who knows, maybe this was just written when he still had a fastball
it was the smallest on the list but
Pluto was a planet and I'll never forget
I remember Powers having a lot of the "grid of a bunch of different faces answering questions" pages that people always griped at Bendis about in Marvel at least
Bendis can be really same-y in tone, it typically happens when he clearly isn't super invested in in the story or characters and defaults to nothing but snarky banter. His GotG is probably the worst example.
But he can still write really well (his current run on Action Comics is the best Superman book we've had in ages) and the highlights of his Marvel work (Daredevi, USM and Alias) are all pretty different and fantastically executed.
PoX #6 supposedly leaked, judging from previous leaks it is legit.
Turns out ths Librarian and the 1,000 years in the future timeline is the 6th life if Moira X. All of the blue-skinned people aren't Mutants, they're machine-human hybrids having fully entwined together and formed a new lifeform.
The two "humans" on the preserve also aren't humans. They are the last two mutants: Moira X and Wolverine. The Librarian goes to them and reveals he is having doubts about being absorbed by the Phalanx. He initially offers Moira a chance to convince humanity, in another life, to avoid ascension but realizes that the enemy of mutantkind aren't machines it is, and always will be, humanity. The machines are a means to an end, so he rescinds his offer. Then Wolverine kills him, and, at her request, Moira.
Back in the X0 timeline, Moira says that the one thing that never changed in any of the lives she has lived is Charles Xavier. He always remained fully committed to his dream to the end. This is not a compliment. Moira showing all of her lives, spanning over a thousand years, ends up breaking Charles in ways we haven't seen and making sure that he is no longer the Xavier she has always known.
And in the end, just before Krakoa is fully founded and the Quiet Council is formed, Charles, Moira and Magneto meet and discuss the future. Moira wants to remain an active hand and stresses how important it is to maintain the facade that mutants are the future of Earth and never let them know that in every other timeline they have seen, humanity wins in the long run. Charles and Erik thank her for what she has made, but say her work is done and that it is time for them to take over.
The final scene is the party from HoX #6 where Magneto says "Look at what we have made" to Charles. With one additional exchange, in regards to the humans being scared enough to retaliate. Magneto says "Let them try."
them to reveal Xavier had been taken over or nudged in a particular direction by Cassandra Nova or the Shadow King or something to explain why he's now incredibly sinister and why all of mutantkind is acting like they're members of a quasi-religion all of a sudden. It's probably a hangover of reading too much Claremont that I was expecting the answer to be MIND CONTROL.
Spoilering this because even though it didn't happen knowing what doesn't happen is kind of a spoiler.

Honestly the "Moira kinda broke Charles and now we have no idea what he will truly do" thing has a fair bit of nice symmetry with what Zdarsky is doing with Namor over in Invaders. He revealed that Charles tried to help Namor with his PTSD from WW2 and ended up making everything MUCH worse. He is responsible for Namor's wild mood swings and instability and also tried to cover his tracks and buried all of Namor's memories of his involvement.

Neato. So is
Xavier responsible for amnesiac Namor around the time of his origin?

Yup.
Namor was brought to Chuck by one of his WW2 buddies who tried to help. Chuck was starting to form the idea of the X-Men at this point and thought Namor would be a great first recruit and tried to fix his brain but made everything much worse after an encounter with a mutant who could forcibly change living beings into other species and when Xavier realized what he had done he tried a sloppy job of plastering over the cracks and left Namor amnesiac and confused

James McAvoy would act the shit out of this scene.
all of the Year 1000 stuff? Moira's mystery sixth life.
She and Logan were in that human game preserve, trying to figure out what the deal was with the post-humanity blue dudes/Phalanx merger stuff. Once they find out, she gets the ol' sniktbub and goes on to life 7.
Also Xavier and Magneto sound pretty frickin' ominous when talking to Moira and I'm wondering if they put her in stasis or something.
Also also Magneto serves the best tea. Brings a pot and a giant metal ball and then shapes them into tea cups on the spot.

There is another journal entry in PoX that makes Charles and Moira...pretty fuckin horrible
They came up with the Resurrection Machine idea decades ago but had never (even in Moira's lives) encountered any mutants with the necessary reality warping powers.
So Charles and Moira found the people they were most likely to produce a child with such powers and did the deed.
Which means Proteus and Legion's whole tortured lives are directly their fault.

For some reason, I feel like there might be a few mutants who have issues with eugenics

Yeah, I don't see Magneto, even in his current "no matter the cost" mindset, super excited about this. Moira mentions that despite Charles' and her's talk of NO MORE SECRETS they have hidden stuff from each other and I imagine that is one that Erik may not know about.

I don't quite follow what's going on here.
The Moira's journal entries are Hickman tying various events from past X-stories into what he's doing.
In this particular case there was a story in the Claremont era (but that actually happened in Defenders) where Magneto got de-aged into a baby
and then in the 90s there was a retcon that said that Moira tampered with his DNA while he was an infant - in her explanation, his powers were having a degrading effect on his mind so she was strengthening his nervous system to better handle it. Magneto found out, got pissed.

Gutter trash is such a cutting insult.
The phonoaesthetics of it are just a stinging barb dripping with contempt.

He wrote Young Justice!
I just didn't realize how long it was!
(you can hear the Looney Tunes music.)
"Ain't I a stinkah?"
I realize its the Red Skull and so there's an obvious answer but that second to last panel has me straight up channeling Jason Mewes
"What the fUCK happened to that dude's head?!"
Actually, no; different guy.

Oh okay so it's not Red Skull and that's why. Neat. I thought Hulk was just calling Red Skull a Madman.

Oh shit I completely forgot that happened, where can I find it? Wasn't it like a Playstation exclusive or something?
Yes, free if you have PlayStation plus

I'm sure there's a flowchart that explains it
So Charles and Moira found the people they were most likely to produce a child with such powers and did the deed.

The entry in regards to falling out with Magneto slots into the actual events of that story very well in a way that feels natural.
