I'm not sure what the rules are for in-line images, but Apo once said "anything that is not porn can be put behind a NSFW link."

If he really said that, he's wrong. It's expected that people will exercise some common sense as to what's acceptable on a 13+ forum, regardless of a NSFW link.

I don't think I've seen one in a long time, but they are definately NSFW in a way. They don't really deserve to be banned, but I can't think of a rule that doesn't kill them.

Yeah, seriously. There's a catch all against being a fucking tool. You can't do something fucking stupid and then say "but there's no rule!", because there's a rule against doing things that are clearly the work of a dick.

I'm sure there would be a better way to deal with "what mod's are online" in the next version of the forums. I'll save my suggestions for the thread mentioned in the first post.

It's just that I went a week with it without a single mod (or any other forumer for that matter)in SE complaining about it, but I'll remove it now, then

See, and this is obviously my misunderstanding but, it looks more like you're agreeing with everyone that's derailing the thread and that is essentially what the lock does. Those people that are wanting to discuss .hack are basically boned, especially the new guy who got his thread locked.

But dicking on new threads from new people is still really common in G&T.

I forgot to add, the other bit of consistency in G&T that's really missing is films of games. For some reason halo film discussion is ok, but others get shifted to D&D.

More than 50% of the lock reason was the OP being a horrible unreadable travesty. Those people that are wanting to discuss .hack are free to start a new one.

Stuff like this happens all the time. I have to ransack myself and think real hard about what to jail for and not to jail for and shit did I jail for that before and should I jail for it again god damnit.

Sure, I'm not consistent. But I know it. Ideally I should have posted something about "OP sucks, write a better one and study the rules where we require at least a basic attempt at punctuation" etc instead. Hindsight is 20/20 and so on.

I'm more interested in moderating skills than posting skills. The two are entirely separated.
Mods should lead by example. Be pillars of the community.

I'd also argue that you cannot govern a group of people you don't understand. And you can't understand people you don't talk to.

You also need to do this to earn respect among the forumers. The D&D mods are in general well liked and respected in their community because they participate in it.

I would contend that you cannot understand people that you don't listen to. Small distinction, but significant.

Some random thoughts on various topics.

Making the mod forum public would be pretty terrible. The mods need somewhere to talk about mod issues in private. I imagine its sort of like a teacher's lounge where they get to blow off steam too.

Standard Rules: Some rules being standard is a good idea, but not all the rules. We've got different communities and cultures in the subforums, and the rules need to acknowledge that. SE couldn't be SE with D&D rules and vice-versa.

Spoiler Tags. I'm fine with the rules on these, but theres nothing in the post screen that actually lets new people know how to use them. Ideally, the next vesion of the forum will have a button for them in the post screen. In the meantime, why not update the BBCode explantion page to explain them.

I put it to you that listening to someone doesn't make you obliged to agree with them. I've read every post in this thread, and disagreed with many of them, and explained why. The G&T mods are listening to what goes on in the splinter forums, and from what the forumers are saying here, but that does not mean that they're obliged to to agree, or act upon such things. Sometimes we're right, sometimes it turns out that the guys complaining were right, but that's how it works.

A big problem is that people aren't going to be listened to if they're rude, snipey and unpleasant. If you act like a dick, I don't care what you say any more, and your voice will go unheard. Not you personally, y'know.

That had more to do with a lack of alternative measures than anything else. And anyhow, PA is a business now, very unlike the way it was run back then. If it's a choice between reverting to the M2 status-quo and shutting this place down, you can be damned sure Robert will simply pull the plug.

Well, that's a matter of how things get enforced. When you see that happening, if it's a thread you're convinced has merit, try PMing the person who locked it and ask them to split off the stupid replies and unlock it. Most of the time that's not happening because the moderator would assume that there isn't anyone who really cares about holding a discussion in it, and they don't want to have to do the same thing 15 minutes later when the same crew, or even a different crew dogpiles it into something that needs to be locked again.
