ugh the official translation of this thread sucks

A trap is for fish: when you've got the fish, you can forget the trap. A snare is for rabbits: when you've got the rabbit, you can forget the snare. Words are for meaning: when you've got the meaning, you can forget the words.

I saw the One Piece movie

It was good! Just a big dumb romp that doesn't even remotely work with the canon but that's fine because who cares

It was nice to see basically everyone, there were lots of great gags and it has almost none of the Gross Shit that the series has had

Only complaints are the CG on the big baddie was real dodgy and they maybe could have trimmed some fat in the third act. Even for a shonen anime, maybe a few too many instances of LUFFY SAYS HE IS READY FOR THE BADDIE AND ATTACKS BUT GETS CRUSHED.

Which OP movies are worth watching?

I've only ever watched Strong World, which was rad (and presumably fits into canon, since I remember like...a set-up chapter? Special?)

edit: Ah, apparently Strong World is also the only one written by Oda.

He's written basically every one since strong world on.

    One sentence reviews.
    * One Piece: The Movie - generic and forgettable
    * Clockwork Island adventure - fun "early arc" sort of movie
    * Chopper's Kingdom on the Island of Strange Animals - I seem to recall this being rather boring
    * Dead End Adventure - great concept, silly enemy power (in a good way)
    * The Cursed Holy Sword - not bad, but kinda weird
    * Baron Omatsuri and the Secret Island - slightly odd art style, but excellent movie
    * Giant Mecha Soldier of Karakuri Castle - I genuinely remember nothing about this one despite watching it. I think it was okay?
    * The Desert Princess and the Pirates: Adventures in Alabasta - retread of the arc at light speed - not terrible if you're familiar, probably nonsense if you're not
    * Episode of Chopper Plus: Bloom in the Winter, Miracle Sakura - "what if they meet chopper after everyone else?" Honestly kinda eh
    * One Piece Film: Strong World - excellent movie, all around.
Straw Hat Chase - never watched
    * One Piece Film: Z - also excellent, but this (and Gold) hit the same beats a bit too much, so the first one still feels superior
    * One Piece Film: Gold - see previous, but with more style
    * One Piece: Stampede - Fanservice: the movie, and I loved it.

    Tiers:
-Everything from Strong World on (minus chase) and Baron Omatsiri
    -movies 2 and 4
-movie 5 and the recap movies
    -everything else

It's weird to me how often I see 'sutairu' translated as 'style', even in official translations, when it's blatantly being used as 'figure' and the 'style' translation is sorta nonsense.

It makes me curious about what mistakes are just as common, but I don't recognize what's happening and just move past in ignorance.

so because i was in a cyberpank mood I watched

    Ghost in the Shell and
    Ghost in the Shell: Innocence

    yesterday

the dub versions of those movies are not good, innocence's dub was better than the original, but suffers from being an over indulgent bit of cyberwank philsosoophy

I love some of the concepts in those movies, but dear lord do they like to have characters just spout philosophical gibberish

GITS: Innocence is very far up it's own ass. So much so that it's easily my least favorite part of the franchise. I watched it back when it first came out and never felt any desire to watch it again.

yeah I was not particularly keen on Innocence

the original is still super fantastic though and I actually still like the dub for it well enough

the GitS:SAC dub is monumentally better though

    it's really weird

it's a lavishly animated movie, like they spent a ton of money on some really-hard-to-animate scenes, and technically a lot of them are smooth and they do a good job of integrating their hand drawn characters into their CG backdrops

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OFxvkVLPpio

but man it's just... hard on the eyes

color choices, character designs, amount of detail, it's all kind of fatiguing to the point where the full two-hour run of the movie feels like an endurance test

I think there are two versions of the original dub

    7OIh4Jq.jpg

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AzovpBgscGk

the major's voice actress just sounds like she's struggling with trying to say these very profound lines while also trying to convey that she's completely uninvested in them emotionally

I'm not sure if the second dub does a better job

    more talking about chihayafuru

i guess a big part of the appeal for me is how much it reminds me of my time playing chess. there are so many 1 to 1 analogs.

also most of the cast are varying types of lovable idiots. even the smart characters are idiots.

  • Options
    KanaKana Registered User regular
The thing I always really liked about chihayafuru is that it's about a game no one cares about

Like, most manga/anime based around some other game are extremely "Hey kids, you know what the COOLEST GAME IN THE WORLD is???"

It's sort of like how world-ending threats inevitably make RPG motivations boring, because yeah, of course you're gonna fight if the alternative is nothingness.

And like, of course you're gonna play yu-gi-oh, it's the most important game in the entire world and if you're bad at it you literally might die from your own uncoolness.

Point being, it's great to have a series like Chihayafuru where they're spending enormous amounts of energy and time all for an activity that will give them no real reward and nobody else outside of their small competitive circle gives a fuck about.

It's all about just like love for the game and pure competitive spirit, and that gives actually interesting character motivations. Especially when the lead is female. Like how many other shows - not even anime, just like shows, period - can you think of which is all about a girl who's motivated by competition?

A trap is for fish: when you've got the fish, you can forget the trap. A snare is for rabbits: when you've got the rabbit, you can forget the snare. Words are for meaning: when you've got the meaning, you can forget the words.
