Man, watching someone get drunk is fascinating; especially the transition between "fun" drunk to "making inappropriate comments" drunk.

I played wow classic for a bit, and enjoyed it a lot.

It is a game that I enjoy a lot more than modern wow.

    Naaah.

    Boring to watch maybe.

seriously the new raid is fucking intense when you're actually playing it

also I liked Patrick Willems's take on the Matrix sequels, which is that they're deeply flawed, but in a world where sequels tend to be quick cash-ins with plots that are basically the first film over again, the fact that Reloaded and Revolitions exist at all make them something to be celebrated and cherished

  • GustavGustav Friend of Goats Somewhere in the OzarksRegistered User regular
I'll always take a sequel that is a total trainwreck but interesting to think and talk about over a broadly competent one that leaves the ol memory in like a month tops

Reloaded is an okay movie that's so stuffed with cool ideas that it doesn't really have time to slow down and give most of them proper breathing room. All of the high level plot developments are the right call for where to take the matrix franchise but the execution isn't quite there outside of a handful of really good scenes

Revolutions is really boring and spends way too much of its running time showing the two big fights, and focuses way too much on characters introduced in reloaded that weren't ever interesting enough to really care about

I show the first Matrix to students on occasion, and it's really interesting to watch it with people who haven't seen it before. It consistently works, even with people who generally wouldn't see themselves as fans of whatever genres it operates in.

You do become overly critical of some minor details when you've watched it X number of times, though. The effects on the bug removal device. The exploding elevator door. The somewhat excessive music cues in the first half of the movie.

Which is, of course, all bullshit when you actually get paid good money to watch The Matrix in a nice private cinema. 'Cause it's a really good movie.

This Death Stranding discussion on the Beastcast sounds less like "Kojima got worse" and more "People realized Kojima makes unsubtle, bad stories"

I think there is distinction to be made between a well written story and something you can have fun with

Because the stories in MGS are deeply fucking stupid

Oh they are totally stupid, I just don't agree that that makes them inherently bad somehow.

Like there isn't much value to me saying that a story is "badly written" if the quality of the writing still gives me enjoyment then it has achieved its purpose regardless.

Metal Gear has a lot of interesting things to say and has a really good story.

It also has Kojima up his own ass sometimes and is exceptionally stupid.

    These are not mutually exclusive.

When I first played the first Metal Gear Solid, I thought that was one of the best things I ever played. Just everything ticked right.

Re-visiting it years later, I thought it was, indeed, a classic with some fucking awful writing holy crap. Extending monologuing, aggressive exposition everywhere, and everything with the subtly of a sledgehammer to the face. Why are characters now explaining their life story for ten minutes while they lay dying? That's just how it goes in Outer Heaven man.

I piped in the Death Stranding thread that the god damned launch trailer for the thing is like 8 minutes long. A launch trailer. My dude needed an editor to reign in his overly verbose proclivities like yesterday.

I think a lot of Metal Gear is an age thing. I was in my early 20s when a friend of mine showed me the end of MGS 1, starting with the Liquid fight. And I was like “Wow! This is fuckin’ bad, man.”

A couple of things for context.

How old was the game then, and was it the Twin Snakes version or not?

But also like, that fight is only super memorable after the context of the entire preceding game.

The whole bit about dominant and recessive genes was the funniest fucking thing.

PLOT TWIST! YOU HAD THE RECESSIVE GENES THE WHOLE TIME

    But...isn't Liquid....blonde?

According to the Metal Gear wiki that was all apparently a reference to the comedy Twins where Arnold got all the 'good' genes and Danny DeVito was left with all the 'shitty' genes.

Just imagining liquid snake sitting around watching later era arnold movies looking for one liners to steal but gets the ideas from twins stuck in his head for years.

Imagine if he had seen the other arnold/DeVito movie junior??.
