I have never owned a truck, I have never towed a dang thing

but a basic understanding of physics tells me you don't want the force applied to go from zero to fucking lots instantly as a slack line snaps taut. Best case scenario, the line breaks, worst case... well that.

It also helps if you strap things to frames and not body panels.

If you get under most vehicles there are plenty of spots to tie ropes and straps to on the frame itself.

That was strapped to the frame - if you turn audio on, he had it attached to a tow hook

"did it shear my whole frame?"

    "yeah"

The clip has audio, they said he did strap it to the tow hook, and sheared it out of the frame itself.
He had installed it correctly, he was just a dumbshit who gunned it and broke his frame.
At least the dumbshit damaged his own truck instead of the one he was trying to help.

Yeah, you have got to watch that one again with sound. It's much more entertaining if you can hear the white truck guy say "That's what you do with these straps, you hook them up and just go".

I feel like I see people go more vigorously (though still nowhere like this dude did) with elastic straps, but with stiff straps you absolutely go slowly, barely a crawl.

In rock climbing, one of the first things you learn is to never, ever climb above a static line, for that exact reason. Taking even a short fall onto a line that doesn't stretch can crush your pelvis.

Even with a snatch strap you still load it relatively slowly - putting the car in reverse and gunning it is definitely the wrong thing to do in every single situation.

At this point in my life if I say I am gonna go do something and someone pulls out a phone and starts recording I am going to carefully reconsider whatever it is I was doing because chances are I’m an idiot about to do idiot things.

Yeah - "why are you recording me?" would be the first thought that popped into my head, and out of my mouth.
