If we have another ask Tube thread again this year I'd love to know if the forums or growing or shrinking. Certainly we see far fewer bannings in the ban threads than we used to. Either new folks are figuring it out, or just not coming anymore.

i would assume that broadly speaking the forum would trend downwards in population just due to age

how many people are there who A) still want to post on internet forums but B) haven't yet joined the internet forums of Penny-Arcade, a 21 year old comic

There is something I keep getting stuck on about 'ACAB'. On the one hand, as a working assumption for anyone dealing with the police, it is 100% defensible and supported by a massive body of evidence. No question in my mind.

On the other hand, if I was in a conversation with someone where the topic of police trustworthiness came up and I was like 'yeah ACAB am I right?'

and then there was an uncomfortable silence and they went, 'What, including my Dad? And my Grandad?'

I cannot honestly say I'd be capable of explaining yes, including your Grandad whom I've never met, and including your Dad who got third degree burns dragging someone from a wrecked car in the line of duty, without coming across as a complete prick

or, alternatively, explaining that I didn't literally mean 'all', yes I know I said 'all' but I didn't mean 'all', without sounding like a back-pedalling idiot.

The whole reason that systemic abuse exists is so that it doesn't matter how good the individuals that make up the system are. It doesn't matter whether individuals are good or not, it's the system that is corrupt to the foundations. ACAB isn't really about "every single cop is a horrible person" it's "every single cop is part of a toxic and carcinogenic cycle of violence and abuse that victimizes the vulnerable and the innocent"

So this is when it's important to think about how the necessary participation in a late-stage capitalist society compromises us all in different ways, and how our individual choices compound that

You got hearthstone on your phone? Great, you're supporting blizzard's suppression of voices attempting to bring a spotlight to the struggles of their country

You watching football this weekend? Cool, you're supporting an industry that happily abandons its players when they're retired and breaking down physically

I'm compromised because I had a brief and disastrous stint with naval intelligence, even if I'm a big DSA Veterans Working Group supporter and subscribe to About Face

Someone who chooses to be a cop is additionally compromised by participating in a system that gives far too much power to a group of people who cant and won't answer to anyone in 99 percent of cases

None of these things make us bad people in theory but they do make us subject to completely fair judgements from people who are unable to tolerate those compromises

My dad is a retired cop, so is my uncle. I have a cousin who is currently a cop. It's taken me a little longer to see some of the larger problems with the police as an institution as a result. I don't...necessarily like stuff like ACAB, but I think that's mostly because it feels like it's turning into a meme than because I disagree with what it's trying to get across.

Everything is more complicated than these big blanket statements or gags or phrases, obviously. My feelings on it are complicated because I'm...close to it. There are cops out there who are fundamentally good people, sure. I don't think my dad is a bad person because he was a cop for nearly twenty years, and I don't think my uncle is a bad person for serving longer than that, and I don't think my cousin is a bad person now.

    But.

There are real fucking problems with policing in this country, and a huge reason that they don't get solved is because the police do not want to solve them, and actively fight against it. For every cop that wants to do the right thing, there are plenty of others who are either content with the status quo, or who actively fight to make sure change doesn't happen. And there are systemic problems that have much deeper roots in this country's history, too. So I guess...I dunno. I'm probably not gonna be running around yelling ACAB or whatever but...I mean, I'm not gonna begrudge the people who do? My positive experiences don't outweigh the current shitshow that is modern policing, nor do they outweigh the history of policing in this country.
