It just occurred to me that that had to go through all of this nonsense about weight gain and hair falling out because they could never publish something simple like 'I missed my period' in a family newspaper.

I assume thats how doctors worked back in the 60's which is when Mary Worth is trapped, though my understanding is that as a woman going to even a modern doctor you stand a good chance of having your cancer/ongoing heart attack/rabies infection misdiagnosed as cranky fussy lady hysterics with an ibuprofen prescription

Oh no! Iris is letting her hot young boyfriend down by choosing to age normally and experience menopause! If she really cared about him, she would maintain her fertility and, by extension, her sexual desirability just by wanting it bad enough! Guys, I’m … I’m starting to suspect that Mary Worth may not be a feminist comic strip.

Not to belittle what women experience, but it's not entirely gender limited:
    Me: "My leg hurts."
Doctor: "That's normal. Get some exercise."
    [One year later]
Me: "My leg still hurts, and it hurts even worse after exercise. Like, for days afterwards."
    Doctor: "That's still normal."
    [One year later]
Me: "My leg still hurts. Like, a lot."
    Doctor: "That's still normal."
Me: "Out of interest, how would you go advise going about amputating a limb using household tools?"
Doctor: "Fine, we'll schedule a scan."
X-Ray tech: "Wow, your leg is really fucked up, you should have come in years ago."

Nobody remembers the singer. The song remains.

Yeah that happens. Also the sort of thing you'd want to get a second opinion on if your doctor is that much of a dick.

I'm happy to say my primary care doctor is usually down to have any scans or exams done that I want to have done.

"Well we called you back in because your blood work looks a little concerning..."
"Yeah, your staff didn't bother to tell me not to have coffee before, there's a whole quart of french vanilla in there. I've explained this to like three of your staff over the phone and in person."
"(blinks slowly, uncomprehending)...So yeah, definitely be aware of diet, cut back on sugars, need to be careful of pre-diabetic..."
"Did you hear me that there was caffeinated sugar in my bloodstream at the time? I mean, is there *still* a concern based on that?"
"...French Vanilla? Oh, well in that case we didn't even need to *see* you, bloodwork looks fine, maybe cut back on fats and sugars and get some more exercise."
"So I didn't even need to be here, or spend the week freaked out I was getting diabetes?"
"LOL guess not, that'll be $80"

I found a dentist by accident who was really great, for some reason doing a stint in a franchise dentist office I was going to at the time. Once I was married and we both needed to see a dentist (because we both had been ignoring dentists for years), I sought the guy out at his own practice. He remembered me! Still a great dentist, and has a great practice. Hopefully he never moves away from my area.

Oh, I have especially fond memories of dentists.
One managed to cut into my tongue while giving me a filling. She didn't mention it, so I didn't find out until I got home and the anaesthetic wore off and I noticed a lot of pain and blood in my mouth.
Another one gave me three unnecessary fillings while trying to find the cause of my toothache, then when he did find the cause of my toothache, gave me emergency root canal without telling me what it was. Or giving me anaesthetic. Then after I looked up what he'd done and asked about it, he insisted I wouldn't need antibiotics to keep it safe from infection while it was healing. When I went back a day later with a massively swollen infected gum, he drained it and gave me some antibiotics.
    tldr; Dentists suck.

Let me tell you one of the things that stands out about my great dentist: he cares whether his patient is comfortable or not. Like right down to, if your lips are dry he'll put a little lip balm on so they don't crack while he's fiddling around in your mouth. No dentist I've had before him noticed or cared about that. He also instantly stops the minute you make any sound like you're in pain, and asks if you're OK. He's amazing.

Edit: Next time I see him I should tell him that the lip balm thing was one of the reasons I searched for him when I needed a dentist, ha ha.

I've had dentists who have yanked my lips back so far it left them sore for days. Dentists who lied about if a procedure was covered by insurance and how much it would cost because I was on the fence. Dentists who claimed they couldn't give me an anesthetic as they literally grinded a very sensitive tooth down to a nub to fit me for a crown, which then fell off in less than a year because they didn't fit it properly.

Yeah, I had a dentist like that. Sadly he retired. My new dentist is okay, I guess but I still get the impression he's doing work just to pay for his third Yacht and not because I actually, y'know, need it.

If it's about the first story, no such luck. When I went back to ask about it, she insisted I must have bitten my tongue will it was anaesthetised.
I argued that to have bitten into my tongue where this cut was, I'd have had to bitten it clean off, but it was an impasse. It healed quickly enough, but these experiences have gotten me used to the sensation of swilling my mouth out with salt water to help it heal.

This is one thing I will always be greatful to socialised healthcare for.

Like how the hell can you trust any doctor in the US when they’re charging you? Isn’t it like when you go to a mechanics for a service and they always find something they claim needs to be fixed?

    depends

In my experience, as long as it's easily tested for (strep throat, ear infection, and similar) they're fine

If you have something difficult to diagnose or long standing, you'd better hope you're rich or a state/federal employee in a blue state or you're screwed

My experience with medical professionals has generally been good. I've only had to replace two doctors. One was fine, but so slow it was insane. The other didn't listen to me and would get me in and out of their office in like a few minutes.

Yes. Explanation from Burlew on his site:
Today's comic is the last for this volume, and as usual, I'll be taking a little bit of a hiatus before starting the new story. In addition to general planning and writing that I would be doing to prepare, I also need to take a little bit of extra care because this next arc will be the final volume in the Order of the Stick saga and I want to make sure I have all my proverbial ducks in a row for the big finale. Don't get too worried that the comic is about to end, though. The last two books took five years each, and this final book has the potential to be even longer than either one of them. So there will be years and years of OOTS left, even as the story is headed toward a conclusion.
