if I remember right the bethesda conference seemed like they specially mic'd up and and filmed only the front row, which was coincidentally filled with bethesda employees trying to pretend they were regular audience members.
There's this roller coaster at Universal Studios, themed around The Mummy. At the ride's conclusion, all of the ride operators applaud you for having made it through. The ride is three minutes long. In an hour, they have to applaud twenty times. A whole shift, hours upon hours, of feigned enthusiasm to pay your rent.
Anyway, capitalism is a grim hellscape.
Hey, don't sell them short. It's a three minute ride, but there are multiple cars running at a time. They probably have to applaud around 40 times an hour.

Some people think these kinda "jokes" are the same as anti-italian or anti-irish humor
i.e. these groups are essentially wholly assimilated into western whiteness and so derogatory references to their culture of origin are permissible
though a) these kind of put downs are never used against WASPs, which helps maintain a low-key awareness that these later European migrants are still considered "second class" white people, despite them enjoying, cooperating with and perhaps fully buying into the american racial hierarchy
b) jews, as always, remain an exception. Even though jewish assimilation into american culture is largely successful, their perception as actually "belonging" is conditional in a way which other ethnicities that have integrated into the upper echelons of american society are not subject to

I haven't listened and Steve has fucked up before but he's generally a good guy who does not throw slurs around (he will not say gypsy) so I have to believe it was at the very least it was an ill informed dig at racists and not an out and out malicious attack
