Now I’m watching all of Bong Joon-hoo’s catalogue. I love in these movies that when people lash out in anger, they never just throw a punch, it’s always a full-on flying kick to the chest

memories of murder is my other favorite but it is blllllleak

(every frame a painting has a couple other bong joon ho focused videos but they're spoilery)

Developed a massive crush on a painter and wanted to impress her with art, but I'm colorblind and bad at art. So I thought, "I like to talk a lot, maybe I can write." I couldn't, and she wasn't impressed, but I had fun and stuck with it. Writing is a good hobby when you are broke, because words are free.

Wrote prose for a while, hated having to write the word "said" so much. Got into screenplays because I liked the formatting. They just have name, dialogue, no muss no fuss.

These are both deeply stupid motivations, but they absolutely delight producers and executives because they are simple and honest. You can only hear, "I was practically raised by TV" so many times in one staffing season.

I'll be honest, that has definitely been an appeal of screenplays to me.

I've dabbled in creative writing from time to time (even got my second B.A. in it for some dumb reason), and boy do I have a hard time writing literally anything that isn't dialogue.

it is extremely common for writers to either love or hate dialogue

That was me for a good long while. I learned to get around it by trying to make my prose more conversational. It's grammatically "incorrect," a lot of the time, but I didn't go to college so who gives a shit.

I like a block of action that's, like, Denny doesn't want to hear this shit. Can't. He doesn't mean to pick up the knife, but he's not surprised to see it in his hand. And he remembers what knives are for, yeah.

Put quotation marks around that and it could be some grizzled stickup artist telling a ghost story to a green wheelman over cups of stale coffee. The difference between "dialogue" and "action" can get pretty blurry, if you need it to be.

Yeah, which is why an aversion to action needs to be overcome in most mediums

Or you could write a book like Kiss of the Spider Woman, which absolutely kicks ass

I did go to college - got a degree in this stuff - and I can absolutely tell you, one, most people don't talk using proper grammar; and two, if you're a writer and not a journalist, then your writing style will often not follow proper grammar either.
That said, IMO, it's good to know what the rules are before you start breaking them, so you know where and when and how to do so.

To discuss how I feel about those accents, I wanted to reference Allison Brie's Russian wrestling persona in GLOW. I thought I remembered it, but I did a quick Google to doublecheck.
Turns out, there's a very popular fleshlight varietal with the same name as that persona! And it also turns out, there's a really robust fleshlight review ecosystem! Learn something new and vaguely upsetting every day.

Hm, nice idea for a movie.

A better Black Widow movie would be set after her death. Don’t tell me that doesn’t work. Comic books people!

Today I'm watching Iron Man 3 for the first time. I never bothered with it before because I didn't like 2, but since I started listening to the Blank Check MCU episodes I've been rewatching the Marvel films I like and catching up on ones I've missed.

It's pretty good, much better than 2. Ben Kingsley is brilliant.

Probably going to watch Age of Ultron next because I'm ill and want something to fall asleep to.

Iron man 3 is better than two, but still feels a bit bloated and it was a big part in me starting to not care about the mcu.

The whole "rewatching all my favourite MCU films" has made me realise how many of them I don't actually care about. It's basically Iron Man, Ragnarok, Homecoming, and the actual Avengers films. Maybe Black Panther, I still need to watch it a second time.

The best Black Widow movie is two movies, one pre-Avengers that's aping Mission Impossible and one post-Winter Soldier that's aping Jason Bourne.

Anyway it's hilarious how much that trailer highlights ScarJo's refusal to ever do an accent

They need to bring her back to be a girl-version (or however that works) of Groot's species.

I think Endgame broke me and I just don't really care about more MCU movies, and this is coming from me, the person who genuinely liked the rest of the MCU. I mean I'll still probably go see it mainly for David Harbour and Taskmaster?
