A Rogue Squadron series is literally all l ever wanted

Rogue Squadron would be perfect for a tv show. The A-Team with spaceships and lasers.

I've said it before but I just want them to copy and paste Battlestar Galactica into Star Wars. Give me a fuckin gritty drama about an old frigate during the GCW trying to complete a mission with limited supplies and cut off from reinforcements.

I want the whole stern but compassionate captain, and the hot shot ace pilot with discipline issues who's too good to let rot in the brig when shit goes down, I want the alert fighters scrambled and all crew to report to action stations, and the crew chief to yell at the squadron commander about how careless the pilots are being with his fighters.

Yeah it's formulaic and shit but the fact that it hasn't really been done in Star Wars is a travesty. Put Hera in charge of a Nebulon B and make some shit happen damn it.

Yeah well as someone who doesn't have access to Disney+ it's not fun for me. Me using Twitter is a choice I make and I suffer for it, but I still don't see why that means people should just post it all up in these threads without spoiler tags or anything.

If you think that isn't a big deal, well, would you feel differently if people were posting gifs from big audience enjoyment moments from Episode IX outside of spoiler tags and you hadn't seen the film yet?

I wasn't really trying to comment on that situation. I don't use Twitter and I'm sorry you do. People are always gonna be dicks about spoilers, especially on sites like Twitter where people take great pleasure in trolling others. Idk, it was a funny tweet because the Baby Yoda memes have gotten to me on Instagram, but not in a serious enough way where I felt I was being spoiled.

According to JJ about the Rise of Skywalker:
They are going to go into Finn's backstory and Poe's which I don't think is necessary. Finn was kidnapped as a child and brainwashed into becoming a Stormtrooper and Poe's family was in the Rebellion. Why are we going to waste time on this?

I'll be honest, I'm actually getting excited about it thanks to the promos and stuff (rocket trooper catapulting motorcycles notwithstanding). This, despite thinking "at least it didnt have Jar Jar" about FA and TLJ making me want to disengage from Star Wars entirely.

I've got no problem with mining their backstories for material, but it's something that should have been introduced in TFA or TLJ at the latest. Kidnapped, brainwashed, child soldier and trying to live up to the reputation/expectations of your parents (or whatever it is they'll do with Poe) aren't things you can just dump into the last movie in a trilogy and then hope to resolve out in two hours. Not without a lot tighter writing than whats been in any of the ten other movies.

Shut up, Mr. Burton! You were not brought upon this world to get it!

I’m pretty in favor of any backstory being discussed/explained. Considering the brand new capital planet of the new republic was destroyed within less than 20 seconds of being introduced, and never factored into the consequences of the plot in any way at all, if we learn Poe has a space-gluten sensitivity and Finn has a twin sister who has been searching for him since he was taken by the First Order, great.

Because my god we need some stakes and consequences for the payoff of this trilogy.

If Abrams can get my decrepit human husk to experience the emotions evoked when Rey pulls Anakin's saber to her hand in TFA, a ROS ticket will be money well spent.

My expectations are for a satisfying conclusion to the Skywalker story. I'm not sure why we're spending any time on Finn or Poe's backstory in the final movie of a 9 movie arc. That should have been handled much earlier than the last movie of this series. There's just too much to wrap up and 8 set up almost nothing to work towards as a conclusion in 9. So 9 has to set things up for its own story and then conclude that and the entire 9 movie arc if they are going to make this last movie be a good bookend for the series.

    imo

Well they went back to him after their original director choice made such a bad movie it made a Disney exec cringe so they were desperate. I hope he respects Johnson enough not to shit over TLJ but I'm not expecting much from him

We only find out about Luke's backstory in Empire, and then Han's backstory is fleshed out with Lando in the same movie. Or the quick shot of what's under Vader's helm. Not to mention the slightly awkward scene in RotJ where Luke and Leia talk about their parents. There's nothing wrong with them touching on their backstory, and i doubt it's gonna be long flashbacks or anything. Probably just... Characters talking. Like the OT.

Also, people are mad about the new Empire, aka the First Order. The EU had this happen MULTIPLE times. Grand Admiral Thrawn has a reborn Empire that pushes the galaxy back on its heels as does the Reborn Emperor.
This feels like a bad take on the Thrawn trilogy. The point of Thrawn in the trilogy is that the Imperial Remnant he comes in and takes over is down and the underdog. In every book he's expected to lose and doesn't because he's MF'ng Grand Admiral Thrawn. HIS side is the underdog, not the New Republic. Comparing it to the First Order feels all sorts of wrong when it's never shown they are the underdog / they have resources Thrawn could only dream of having / The New Republic folds immediately.

As stated above, Thrawn is in no way comparable to the First Order. Hell, they even have a scene of him encouraging / sparing a crewmember when they learned from their mistakes whereas Vader would've killed him / Snoke or Hux or Kylo probably would've. They definitely wouldn't encourage learning!

Additionally, using the EU to try and defend the new trilogy feels like a mistake in and of itself given that the main bits people like about the EU seem to be Thrawn, Rogue Squadron, and then Mara Jade to an extent....none of which imo have analogues in the new trilogy or used in your examples.

You're using a lot of examples that most would say are shit and then saying, see, it's in the new ST..!

Also Thrawn fixed cloning tech and used a hidden ghost fleet to suddenly have more manpower than the Republic could deal with.

And he only lost because he was assassinated.

He didn't even get all the Dreadnoughts, he was partially foiled there....and it was WAY earlier in the series if you're comparing it to these new Star Destroyers.

It was also an intelligent use of clones (we're ignoring C'Baoth or whatever, right?).

Betrayed and assassinated by his own bodyguard, no less.

Otherwise Thrawn legit would have won the day. And TBH, his Empire probably wouldn't have been nearly so evil as Palpatine's.

Things Disney should look to do post Episode 9, a sad fans list:

    - An "Indiana Jones" franchise featuring an unknown character. Set it in the post Episode 3, pre Episode 6 era. Classic Antagonist (Empire), centered around a lone protagonist. Non interlinked stories. Pros are you only need to work around one actors schedule (rotating support cast) you're not limited to a three movie Arc and you don't have suspense neutered by dealing with a known character.

    - A post Episode 9 trilogy, developed by one creative team

    - An out of era trilogy, developed by one creative team

-One shots helmed by whatever talent you want to get involved in your sandbox but doesn't want to commit a decade to your corp.

Yes, but IIRC it wasn't so much a brutal subjugation. More like hoodwinked into thinking that the Empire, Darth Vader in particular, saved their homeworld from the ravages of a galactic war and that they now owed him fealty for their salvation.

Thrawn got fucked by Vader and Palpatine's stupid evil nature. They didn't save the planet, but instead just had a bunch of droids that were pretending to clean up the environmental devastation because they figured they could stretch out the con into infinity.

What makes Thrawn work is that he's one of those competent and charming characters that you'd expect to eventually turn hero, but he's utterly committed to order enforced by violence. He just prefers the velvet glove as the first approach.

Ah, so the issue is you don't consider the main characters of this trilogy to be the main characters, and you don't care about their story.

Like, Finn is only just now a full-on member of the Resistance. Poe didn't have anything about him outside of "hotshot pilot what crushes on Finn maybe?" in TFA. There is plenty to explore in both of them.

"Why are we dealing with Leia's backstory in RotJ? We should have known this stuff sooner than the last movie in the series."

Thats quite the leap you are making. I'm not sure you could have forced a less charitable reading of such a small post.

I like Rey/Finn/Poe. They are good additions to the overall story.

I'm only saying that the final movie in a 9 movie arc is not the place to start filling out backstory. There's too much else to do. Thats all I'm trying to say.
