Nah, you can understand Kingdom Hearts' lore just by playing the games (the issue is that there's a ton of games).
Dark Souls is kind of famous for that not being the case, with more than a few people stumbling their way into reigniting the First Fire and not understanding what the fuck is happening because the game is needlessly cryptic about all of it. Not to mention that Dark Souls has some straight-up JJ Abrams Mystery Box shit where they set up a bunch of cryptic questions but don't actually have any answers.
