As of Sun/Moon and this gen, some returning Pokemon have regional variants exclusive to where the game takes place. They look different (not just a recolor, like, different models) and different typing and sometimes different evolutions
But in Sword/Shield they're all the Galarian ones then right? Because it's in Galar?

You can get a regular Meowth if you.... either pre ordered or bought it within a week of release or something? But I don't recall if you can carry any others forward

There are a few trades for the old variants. In the first gym you swap Galar-Meowth for Kanto-Meowth and in the fairy gym swap Galar-Yamask for Unova-Yamask--these are notable because it's the only way to get Persian and Cofagrigus, who're needed for completing the dex. There's also a trade for Kantonian Mr. Mime in Spikemuth, but why would you?
And the Kantonian Meowth from mystery gift can't evolve because it's got its special gmax form

Hah, I was dipping around the Chirchester Bay area to make sure I hadn't missed any items or trainers, a Mantine leapt right into my face, which would have been a mildly annoying time waste if it wasn't a very slightly different shade of blue. I think that's the first wild shiny I've encountered since the games moved to 3D models.
Well i did one exhibition challenge with gmax meowth, made $300k and immediately shipped him off to attack power school because oh damn that makes money real easy and i need to buy out all the boutiques still
Luxury balls grind seems both way more fun and way easier. Just grind out raids in the wild area and spend all the watts in luxury balls. Each active den gives 2k watts, which is enough to buy like 20 luxury balls, which is 30k. A full 999 set of luxury balls sells for like 1.7 million. Plus you get all the treasures and xp candies from doing the raids.
The partner Pokemon in raids seem to be like level 70 if you bring in a level 100 Pokemon, so it's pretty easy to solo everything

I tried to do it online mode and it just sat there for 3 minutes and then timed out. How am I supposed to do the online raiding?

double-double check you're actually online, which requires going to the y menu and THEN hitting +
it's no guarantee people will join you, even then; if you've got something lucrative like a gmax or a popular mon like Gardevoir it's a lot more likely to fill up
Grats! By the way, what constitutes a complete Pokédex at the moment? Aren't there still a few no-one can get yet, like Mewtwo?
The 400 pokemon in the Regional Dex for Galar
The bit I was confused about was whether "special" pokemon like Mew and Mewtwo counted towards that 400, but it seems they aren't assigned Galar Pokédex numbers (Serebii.com just has "FOREIGN" for their Galar index). Which makes more sense in hindsight, it would be a dick move for Nintendo to make everyone buy a Pokeball Plus just to get all 400.

Alcremie's Aroma Veil with Falinks's Defiant would be pretty fun, I think
Then Alcremie uses Decorate while Falinks uses No Retreat... I think that's a teamup that could work, even if it's got weaknesses that aren't instantly occurring to me

But if a pokemon is in, any variants it has can be imported
So for example you can transfer an old meowth in and he will look different
