The cheese was too much for me. There's unintentionally cheesy stuff in the earlier games but they're largely serious in tone and REMAK2 upped that with the sheer visceral visuals on the enemies. I prefer that tone to spin kicks and body slams and knife fights and QTEs. I get people like it but it's not for me. I returned DMC5 after completing it because I just had no impulse to replay it because they'd changed, so significantly IMO, the core of what I wanted from a DMC game. Playing as Dante, big gothic cathedrals, Metroidvania backtracking, and charismatic enemies.
I don't need to fight
Vergil for the umpteenth time, I don't care about Vergil's son or any of that faux drama and the spread of combat among so many characters diluted it.
The enemies from DMC1 still are memorable to me because they repeat and they have character on every appearance + backstories about what they are about and why they are doing what they are doing. Even for a giant lava crab.

RE4 was virtually perfect. Literally the only thing I would change about it if I could would be to add RE5 style context sensitive melee attacks on grounded enemies.
I've played RE4 before, but I'd really, really prefer the RE2 remake control scheme. The aiming in 4 feels stiff and a bit awkward in comparison. It's sort of like how original MGS controls, while awesome at the time, are even a bit awkward now.
On the cheese front, I think RE1 has the sweet spot. The acting and setpieces are B-movie, but have the appearance of trying for A-quality . Sort of how B-movies that are made to be intentionally bad B-movies aren't usually as good as B-movies that creators pour their heart and soul into. RE4 starts getting a bit too on the nose and over-the-top with its B-movie awareness. Plus, zombies > ganados.
Thinking about it hard, Resident Evil 5 isn't that cheesy next to 4. It's as plain as a vaguely racist zombie in the noon day sun that Capcom was rigorously trying to capture the Hollywood war film atmosphere of Black Hawk Down and other vaguely racist super-cool war story films and plays it pretty straight, or at least attempts to. Sheva, for a one-off female heroine, is played pretty straight and with less Capcom gaze than you'd expect in the franchise (with her default costume anyway). It's not actually scary either, though in retrospect I don't find RE4 to be scary personally, but goes for a bleak, nihilist feel about it.
And then Wesker shows up. Total cheese saturation.
RE4 has some good scary parts (the regenerators, especially), but on the whole doesn't really strike a horror tone.
I didn't even find those parts scary the first time I played through it, missing the infrared (?) rifle scope. A moment of panic, followed by anger and frustration that I was exhausting all my ammunition (upon learning that I was doing it wrong), but not scary.
That, and a moment with the armored knights, came closest. But they weren't actually enough to cross the threshold into "horror."
I had a similar feeling about the Baker parts of RE7. The parts with the Molded, that felt like horror. Those parts were scary, creepy, and wonderfully gross.
But the Baker parts just felt like gore porn. Random dismemberment just for shock value. I didn't feel tension or fear. I just felt like they were trying to shock me with extreme violence.
I'm also one of the few people who loved the boat section in RE7. That's my favorite part of the game, because that part was 100% molded and felt the most like traditional Resident Evil to me.
RE7 is heavy on the gore porn, to the point of making RE5 look like a stage performance. It's David Cronenberg: The Game. But it very much plays to that.
Yeah I think the whole FPS thing was just to hide it being Jill.
It was a decidedly unhype trailer. A different cut might have made it better, I think it's because it's CGI and seems absent of anything iconic of RE3 bar the protagonist, but none of that made me excited to play 3make. I'm still not fond of the Nemesis design change, it just looks like a malformed Tyrant at the minute. Nice to see Brad is still around though.
It looks like there might be an introductory sequence--or even more than one--that puts you in a first-person perspective for Jill, since it continues well after its established who it is, but aside from getting to see Jill see herself in a mirror, I doubt the game is going to continue in the first person for particularly long. Capcom increasingly favors weird camera/perspective tricks as bookends in the franchise, RE2 had something similar. Given how well the third-person gameplay style works for RE2, though, I doubt Capcom is going to radically change things up for the RE3 remake.
Well, I’m hyped. Got goosebumps when that clock started running backwards. I’m curious as to why they’ve seemingly dropped the subtitle this go-around.
I'm annoyed at the leak, now. This would have been a great way to announce 3 by surprise; "Resistance is totally going to have a single-player mode, here it is."
“Hey, you know that new game we’ve been hyping up the last couple of months? Just kidding, it’s actually a side mode in our other new game, which we secretly developed in tandem with our last new game, just because we knew you fuckers would love it. We were even coy about it, just to be cute.”
Fuck-You-Monster Hunter money is apparently the best thing that’s ever happened to this company.

I don't like leaks specifically for this reason. I'm as excited for new games as anyone else, especially one like this which furthers the revitalization of a beloved franchise after the slow tumble of 5, 6, ORC, Rev1( which IMO setting wise is good but gameplay was bad), and Umbrella Corps. Rev2, 7, RE2make, and now RE3make have shown to be a steady incline of great RE games. I'd much rather see the studio's reveal teaser of something like this instead of a text article that reads 'RE3 confirmed, trailer coming soon'.
I think that's what made the RE2make reveal trailer so good, besides the content, that just filled me with excitement. Like "oh man, this was announced years ago and has been completely hush hush and it's finally coming out, oh shit... it looks great."
Apparently RE spawned from an NES game called Sweet Home? I'm looking into this now... And apparently it's an RPG with switching team mates (like Manic Mansion). It looks really good.

You joke, but I 'm watching the State of Play, and this is exactly what they did.
"We've got an exclusive reveal of the unannounced campaign portion of Capcom's Project Resistance."
Then they cut to the trailer. Presentation-wise, the 1st-person segment makes a lot more sense now

I'm not joking, I'm saying that's what that was, and would have been awesome if we hadn't known RE3 was coming already.
Just watched the State of Play. "Unannounced campaign portion of Project: Resistance" is an absolute money line and would have been fire for fans. Not sure who screwed up on the PSN side of things but man that would have been very exciting.
. . .at least though we know when Resistance will come out and I imagine those servers are going to be getting hammered next year.

I'd also accept REmake, REmake 2, and REmake 3.

I disagree with this. I was a scared teenager playing 4 when it first came out on GC. Instant kill bag on head chainsaw man was enough to scare me.

Not very long to wait. The game includes the previously announced Project Resistance, now called Resident Evil Resistance.

Shades of the RE Movies in there too, with the hospital design, and the surgery on Nemesis scenes.
I wonder if we're getting some first person gameplay sections in this one? Seems weird to mix up both styles together.
I believe you mean, this is the campaign for the multiplayer game Resident Evil Resistance

I'm unsure. It could have just been mimicking the RE2make reveal trailer where it was first person from Leon until they showed him.

I don't think it was a 'good' game but Ive always wanted to play it because of RE. Did You Know Gaming did a good video on it:
