I had a high Drama stat for most of the game, and there are some quite funny extra dialogue options when interviewing people, where you're being too dramatic for your own good. You're always looking for conspiracies and simple explanations do not satisfy you, it's fantastic.

My prime objective keeps being replaced by much more important tasks!

    Solve murder
    Find saddest karaoke song:

Buy back bling spinners from pawn shop :(

    I am Sorrycop.

I spent the small hours talking to a lady on a boat about the nature of the world and wow. That I was not expecting.

Game's got wonder and awe along with hustle and grime, the former's just less easy to find. It's a shame, too, it's a rare thing for a game to let you choose to be amazed.

Really liked the game. Mainly for how my skills would argue how to best solve the case. Here's some of my favorite bits:

    The Expression.

    Rocking the karaoke.

Failing to get the tie - my smarts cop physical abilities could be described as a "weak spagetti man"

Meeting a man so rich he distrots space and selling him a concept.

The chair - it's the destroyer of worlds and spine of all who sit on it.

Dancing so hard I collapse and talk to the city. Turns out, it loves me!

    Slight spoilers:
    Getting Kim to like me!

    Teleporting to the roof.

I really did enjoy that the game is focused on the one location and how the internal thought system works.

    Word of advice:

If at any point in the game Authority tries to convince you to put a loaded gun in your mouth and pull the trigger to stop some random stranger from calling you a sissy, do not assume you'll be fine just because your Endurance and Pain Threshold stats are very high.

Obviously totally unrelated to that, I do like how Kim rolls with most of your stuff in the moment, but will take you aside when you do something truly insane or destructive

They do a really, really good job of taking CRPG-style conversations trees and managing to actually make them flow really naturally. Like parts where Kim will take over a line of questioning, or the two of you sharing a little bit of dark detective humor. And just striking a good balance between like, skills are necessary sometimes to progress, but you still need and want to pay attention, your skills will give you tips but rarely just hand-deliver everything to you. If there's a piece of dialogue that feels like you shouldn't say it, then it's probably a good decision to just not say it.

One of my favorite little bits of dialogue is after you meet the two different racist dudes on day 1, you joke with Kim that somewhere out there is the magical third racist, and Kim goes along with it saying how yes, when we find him he'll grant three wishes.

And then like three days later I finally found a third racist, and unbidden Kim's like, "We've finally done it, we've found the magical racist" And I go, "Yes, oh racist, please grant us our three wishes!" And the racist is like what the fuck are you two talking about?!

    Kim is very good

Who's the third racist? I can think of a few candidates, but no clear, obvious one. (I think I know who the first two are.)

Day 2. Today I will concentrate on the case and finally look into these unpleasant looking union lads. Onward to progress!

Walks into book shop and does not leave until many, many hours later... and not out the same door.

Seriously though, heading into late day two and yet to actually approach the picket mob. It looks like a bad time.

I figured I shouldn't trust Authority when I learned there was a skill called Authority.

I don't think cops should indulge their authoritarian side, really.

Having consistently fluffed my attempts to jump down to get my coat, I've now reached the skill cap for the relevant skill so can't unlock further attempts. Unless I sample some of those confiscated illegal drugs to boost my stats for a bit.

Just the once I say, just the once and I'll be back on the wagon. Just this once...

But not until Kim has gone to bed.

    Damn this game is thematic.

It seems we’re so committed to being an homage to Torment that the later locations (across the canal) are getting noticeably fuzzy and unpolished compared to the stellar opening location. But it’s still all good.

I’m immensely impressed how the central investigation really hooks you with its many twists and turns whilst still maintaining a very believable investigative thread.

    MhCw7nZ.gif
  • ThirithThirith Registered User regular
I don't think the later locations are fuzzy and unpolished so much as simply less packed with stuff, and for the sake of the story's overall arc I'm all for that. As much as Disco Elysium is about its world, its plot isn't unimportant. There's a narrowing of focus as you explore the later locations that also fits with the sense of urgency that IMO is palpable when you find out about
the mercenaries and their plan to wreak revenge.
If the game had remained as expansive and loose, this would've suffered.

Umm so weird question, I might just have to replay the last half hour.

I was reading books in the kitchen of the Whilrling-in-rags and went past 0200 and the door closed. I have no idea how to get out, even looking for cheats to teleport me out has been fruitless.

I ended up reloading, I had spent most of the time interacting with books so while my last save outside the kitchen was a while back re-doing everything wasn’t so bad.

My first run I cancelled because I went straight Inland Empire and Shivers and had no idea what I was doing and by the end of day one I didn't know who I was, where I was, or the recent history of the city or even if I was a cop. It just got a little too out there.

Run 1.5 I did Empathy and Inland Empire for some weird, but a lot less of it and I'm having a great time. Also a socialist this time.

My favorite part of this game is when you get deeper into questioning of Klaasje and
Volition keeps piping in asking why are the rest of your skills making wild conjectures that makes her not a suspect? Volition points out that every single piece of evidence really suggests she did it so why are you ignoring them?

I was just telling a friend about that moment. I'm pretty sure it was my favorite "check" in the game.
    Late game spoilers:
I really want to know what all the option for the tribunal are, it seems so open ended. For me 3 Hardy boys died (Glenn, Theo, and Fat Angus, and I got shot. Threw a Molotov "Spirit Bomb" in Korty's face, dodged the rifle shot and gave Kim my gun.

Just got to the confrontation with the mercenaries. Don't think I could have botched it any harder if I was trying. Absolute shitshow from start to finish.

Despite passing the rhetoric check, decided to continue trying to talk them down instead of taking the shot. Big mistake. Got some super bad roles on two Reflex Speed checks. Ended up getting shot twice. All but two of the union vigilantes are dead, Kim is in the hospital, two of the mercenaries escaped, and my new sidekick is a drug addicted Irish tween.

Guess that Evrart guy is going to get the war he wanted after all.

Yeah, kinda figured. I was hoping to scrape up a few Real and it does talk a lot about the range of fines available, how people react to lower than average amounts, and so forth.

That's roughly what I got (plus minus some survivors), and I considered myself lucky
    because Kim didn't die.

This game loves to troll the player in small ways.

For example, giving the player several articles of clothing with very useful stat boosts after the point of no return, when you can no longer use them.

Spoilers for literally the last thing that happens in the game:
I've replayed that debrief a few times now. Wearing one the jackets you can get from the wannabe Skulls who try to steal Kim's car will also get you a unique reaction, especially if you did the sidequest to return Doom Spiral's jacket. However, to my great disappointment, going in naked does not get a unique reaction.

Also, Cuno gives a much more spirited speech in your defense than Kim does.

Wow! Now that was an ending to satisfy my Inland Empire signature skill.
Given that you could easily entirely ignore the cryptid stuff that must make that scene even weirder!

Shortly after the tribunal I had the terrible idea that I was the murderer as I was actually the dirty cop Ruby accuses you of being. Massive relief to be wrong there.

I was left with one hanging thread though. There's a flat you need to use bolt cutters on to break into, that has a communist symbol outside and a bust and some other stuff inside. I never broke in as the plot never called for it, and reloading a save to break in now out of curiosity, I'm still none the wiser why it was there. Are you just meant to break in because you can, or is there a plot line that leads there?

    In that room is
one bullet for your gun, if that ever matters.

Also if you examine the bust when you know Mazovian socio-economics (not cabineted, just unlocked), you can get the idea for The Suicide of Kras Mazov as a thought. +1 Rhetoric and a full morale heal when you fail a white check.

  • Ivan HungerIvan Hunger Registered User regular
One trap I fell into on my first playthrough was being too curious about thoughts. I wasted a lot of skill points removing old thoughts so I could slot in new ones, just to see what they do upon completion.

This was a bad idea because of just how often the game throws new thoughts at you. If you get too curious about them, you won't have very many points left for investing in skills. Better to treat thoughts as a roleplaying feature and only slot in the ones that match your view of who your detective is as a person.
