Well, doing pretty good in the campaign still. My crew just did the Star League robbery missions and that was a lot of fun. My Warhammer has enhanced heavy lasers which can just *delete* units from across the entire map. But has enough heavy short range guns and jump jets to position myself either for sniping, or for melee depending on the target. It's not often my favorite "designed" mech is also the perfect match for my main character, but it certainly is in this case.
I fought another King Crab in a random mission and THIS time I did it legit. It took 20 rounds of dancing or so. But I was able to get another assault in my roster.
Also for the escape mission, boo, no Atlas, but the Highlander seems pretty cool. I think I'm at the point in the campaign where they just start *dumping* enemies at you. Still, by some miracle I even kept Kamea's soldiers alive. Although the Black Knight and Griffin were shot to pieces.
I'm just a piece or two away from having an entire lance of Assault Mechs, so that will be fun. This game really does make you feel like a tactical genius when you get everything *just* right.

MW2 (Mercs in my case, but it's true about all three games) is kind of hard to get working on anything after Windows 8.1.

Yes, that sounds weird. I'm pretty sure I mean Windows 8.1, not Windows 7. Why? Because there's a costume kernel that was updated all the way to Windows 8.1 (including 7) to allow you to run the Windows 95 release (I want to say 3DFX version, but it may not actually matter at this point) with hardware acceleration. That means environmental and mech textures, etc., as well as a different soundtrack (some people prefer the older audio). It ran at a good framerate on top of that.

But that kernel was never modified to support any version of Windows 10. It's an effective dead end. That leaves what is the most common alternative, Dosbox emulation of the MS-DOS version of the game (which was not 3D accelerated). It does not run well in this software mode--expect low framerates even with a i5 or i7. But it's generally pretty straightforward, even if the lag is bad enough to effect the gameplay and controls.

I ended up buying a used small formfactor Windows 7 machine exclusively for old game. Yes, it was tedious to get running. But ti runs the Windows 95 release of the Titanium Trilogy very well.

It's actually worse than you're making it out to be. The damage model in MW2: Mercs is tied to the framerate. What this ends up meaning is you can unload all your weapons until you overheat and run out of ammo, and not kill a Kit Fox.

It gets so bad that it drove a streamer I watch to rage quit his entire scheduled plan to play through all the Mechwarrior games.

Oh God, I did a full laser Alpha strike on a Quickdraw's head with my new Warhammer's set up and it just... evaporated.
Well, time to try out a new mech!

Shit, that's a bummer. Maybe I was only thinking of MW2 or GBL, but I could've sworn they used the same damage modeling as MW2:M.

Well, I guess I'm glad I have an alternative to run the Win95 version of the game. I prefer it over the DOS version anyway.

I'm still deliberating whether or not to take advantage of that $10 coupon and pick up MechWarrior 5. The feedback so far has been all over the place.

Tonnage limit 250 vs a lance with 2 assaults and a heavy and then later another double lance with something like 2 assaults, 2 heavies, and some mediums? In an urban Defense mission? Christ that was dicey.

MW5. Didnt see anyone respond to my initial question about weapons in MW5, figured this might be helpful to someone here.

    MW5 Weapon Values

Some brief analysis, since things are slightly different from old school MWO and also different from the Battletech adjustments.

    Assuming equal tech levels:
SRMs are strictly superior in DPH as you go up and equal in DPT at any rating. Use the biggest you can mount.
LRM5 followed by LRM15 are the best DPSPT. DPH increases as you go up. LRM15 is the sweet spot, oddly enough.

Lasers have the standard inverse relationship between weight vs DPSPT and DPH. However, pulse lasers are universally inferior to their 'standard' equivalent in terms of DPSPT and DPH. Also note that regular PPCs are more or less identical to LLs for DPSPT and DPH, so pick whatever makes you happiest between the two.

ACs DPSPT go AC/2 > AC/20 > AC/5 > AC/10. DPH is AC/5 > AC/2 >> AC/20=AC/10. -BF is massively superior to a regular AC, to the point where a AC/10-BF compares favorably efficiency wise to a AC/2. AC/5 is probably the sweet spot but any -BF is good if you only have regular ACs available otherwise.

That said, for either Lasers or ACs, pick the appropriate combo of range vs pinpoint frontloaded damage vs extended brawl as makes sense for your playstyle.
this is great and as soon as i have the time i will expand the spreadsheet... but

There are also important damage thresholds to take into account for taking out tanks and helos to consider. So DPS isnt always the most important metric. A LRM 5 or 10 stream fire will probably take out fliers in a single volley and so upgrading to a lrm 15 might be overkill for the specific application, wasting tonnage and ammo.

Mechs usually have enough HP that you can focus on DPS but you always want to have one or two groups that can quickly clear out tanks and fliers before they get close even if you arent firing them efficiently at mechs. This especially because tanks and fliers are, by far, the highest damage/HP units you will face

    wbBv3fj.png
  • SpectrumSpectrum Archer of Inferno Chaldea Rec RoomRegistered User regular
Practically speaking, sneezing on most choppers will do the trick--the ones it won't you just alpha them anyway because they have enough HP where DPS matters. Similarly for hovercraft, shoot them with a brace of MLs (still one of the most efficient things out there) and they die or a couple LLs or the like. Any sane weapon group deals with them.

I wouldn't bother LRMing choppers, you have better things to do than holding for a lock on those. LRM something that matters, look off to swat a chopper or hovercraft with your personal defense weapons, and then look back.

    XNnw6Gk.jpg
  • GoumindongGoumindong Registered User regular
You need AC2s or ER large lasers or PPCs to hit fliers as they approach. You can also lrm tanks but the same logic applies

I've been watching someone's playthrough of Mechwarrior 4 Mercs. Man, it sure is nice how you can just find unmanned mechs to scavenge in the mission. Or how you can deviate from the mission to go destroy an optional mech lance and get full mechs from it, no need to quibble over shares. And every planet sells mechs and they're not all broken garbage, with assaults showing up for sale within like 5 missions. Also, a radar that works over hills. And behind you. And shows you all objectives at all times.
Oh, what's that, an intricate AI lancemate command menu where you can tell them to go to certain objectives while you take others? Of course, that requires that missions have more than 1 objective to begin with...

Fun thing about the fliers (Igors in particular): like mechs, they do have damage sectionality. If you aim for the fuselage, it'll take multiple PPC hits to take down. But, if you aim for either of the engines, it'll only need a single PPC shot to bring down.

Just had a weird bug(?) while doing an escort mission (career mode, BEX3025, Toll the Hounds FP II) - I fired at the OpFor mechs but they just ignored me and kept on attacking the APCs. I know they can eventually switch targets if you ignore them for a round or two but they straight out just didn't care even if I attacked them the same turn, every attack they made was against the APCs. Thankfully the convoy was super-armored Vargrs so they didn't die from a single salvo but I still lost half of them. Never seen that before, unlike the other escort bug where the APCs stop moving.

I found something similar and I run that with LLs instead of PPCs and just more heatsinks.

Lost a torso a few days ago so lost some of the doubles, sadly.

I don't much mind radar not penetrating terrain. I mean, it's radar, not a magical omniscient bad-guy finder. That said, baddies who are in line of sight of you outside of the 45-degree slice in front of your mech? Yeah, they should definitely be lit up like Times Square on New Year's (especially if you're piloting a mech whose main purpose was anti-air duties and thus have a different radar/sensor suite than other mechs). Also, turrets that are directly in front of you and shooting at you...they should also be lit up. Joined into another person's campaign last night and nearly had my Cent's arm blown off because I was looking for a Scorpion tank or Igor that was pinging me with AC fire. Turned out it was an AC2 turret sitting 200m away from me that didn't want to get picked up by radar. I only spotted the turret because I was looking at it when it fired.

Oh man. Marik space is where it's at for goodies. Picked up a Stalker and Highlander. Even found an Atlas and Widowmaker Warhammer. Neither of which I could afford. Oh well.

Slapped my Gauss I picked up earlier in the 733C and a streaming LRM15 with Artemis. It's a thing of beauty. Which is lucky because I had a high reward mission right after I got that bumped me from the 50s to the 70s. Highlander, Stalker, Grasshopper and Warhammer were beat all to hell, but managed to stay in one piece.

Every time you bump up to a new area it's a juggling match trying to make 3 lances to fit in the tonnage requirements.

Yeah, right now, I'm still in the 270t weight limit, and my 2-lance drop deck looks kinda like this:

    Drop1 - Highlander (Heavy Metal), Warhammer-6R, Thunderbolt-5S, Phoenix Hawk-1
    Drop2 - Highlander-732B, Battlemaster-1G, Blackjack (Arrow), starter Centurion

This does leave a couple substitutions on the table, mind you: I can swap out the Grasshopper for the Warhammer, and, if I can free up a little tonnage, I have a Marauder-3R that can join the fray.

I took the weapon value spreadsheet, removed everything but tier 5 and added DPS/Ton and DPS/Ton+1* so that its easier to look at and search though (its on page 2 of the copied spreadsheet here)

    https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1Oy3FUWvs-VGAu23OM2AMp_5QO-xq6VDHos9bX5L74dM/edit?usp=sharing

I will eventually get around to doing sum Damage/Ton and Damage/Heat and DPS/Compensated* since i think this also matters in some/many cases

*That is assuming you take one tonne of ammo for every weapon you equip.

**that is DPS per tonne of Heat Dissipation and ammo weight

If they're obscured from LoS, I don't have a problem with not having them show up on radar. They're not a threat. Like, at all. Hell, not even the LRM carriers, since they're not firing on you until they do have LoS on your mech. As we've both said, it's the things that spawn in and are in plain line of sight of you, are shooting at you, and still not being picked up by radar that are the most egregiously not-fun thing in the game. And that I agree with.

WOO!!! I finally moved the story forward in Battletech and finally got the Argo. My main and someone else is in the hospital for 20 days, but I got a new Trebuchet for my pains.

Now I have an Atlas II.
    Ho, Ho, Ho.
Wow does the Black Market give you access to craaaazy stuff. I was trying not to get any one faction to hate me too much, well, except for the Taurians and Directorate that is, and it looks like it mega paid off.
Why is it so much cheaper to buy the parts rather than the whole mech? That seems real weird. Not to mention this game has the WORST example of economic player hate I've seen in a while. Everything you buy costs 10x what it costs to sell! The same stuff!

Whelp, now @manwiththemachinegun and crew are going to encounter an "accident" and the mech will "disappear" and the whole affair shall become another periphery legend.

Can't sabotage my ship if it breaks down first!
My ship is still a rust bucket, I'm prioritizing getting all the goodies.

Dear Dispossessed of the Inner Sphere,

Your new ticket to ('Mech discussion) salvation has arrived. Please stow all carry-on Light 'Mechs in the overhead compartment bins, and check all your spare heat sinks at the dropship bay doors.

See you on the other side, Mech Duders!
