The idea I had for a return to New Phyrexia was to do it as two sets.

The first set would be called "Escape from New Phyrexia", and would be about evacuating the surviving Mirrans to an uninhabited plane. There could be a mechanic called "evacuate" that gives you some king of bonus for exiling creatures, for example. This would set up New Mirrodin as a place they can return to if they ever want to do another Mirrodin set.

The second set would be called "Quarantine". Lorewise, it would be about sealing off New Phyrexia from the rest of multiverse for good. Mechanically, it would be a set with lots of alternate win conditions to simulate the feel of racing against clock to stop the Phyrexians before they discover a way to travel across planes.

I'm still upset Garruk never got his big bad arc, just Jason Voorhees-ing his way through the multiverse.

Garruk's big problem, as a cursed planeswalker hunter at least, is the same as many villains: he can't ever kill anyone important. Because he can't kill anyone, he just seems kind of ineffective and bad at his supposed niche.

Like, for a guy who supposedly hunts and kills planeswalkers he only ever killed two, neither of which have cards and one of which doesn't even have a name.

Maybe he'll actually get to do something now that he's been uncursed?

Garruk did kill one of the planeswalkers from the Duels games. People were disappointed they killed of a potentially interesting character to make Garruk more threatening.

Another problem with Kraven-Garruk is that sets usually only have three planeswalkers. Competition for those spots is already crowded, so there's little room for a secondary villain who doesn't have any connection to the setting. There are already people complaining about Ajani being absent from Theros: Beyond Death.

Although Calix has the exact same problem. He and Elspeth being joined at the hip makes both harder to use.

The Machine Orthodoxy is 100% my jam, yeah. Those red exposed muscles and that clean white porcelain makes for one hell of an aesthetic, and it's something that actually feels kind of unique to MtG.

It's also probably the best White villain faction?

Beating an oven cats deck 2-1 with hyper aggro mono B feels real good.

Especially when they duress your opening hand and it's like "I got nothin but creatures here bay-beeee"

As I recall, he's the one character who was timeshifted into the present during Time Spiral block but didn't get sent back to his proper time period during the mending.

Can't remember why that happened to only him and no one else though.

I really want the Phyrexians to invade a plane and get fucking ruined. Like oh shit you invaded Kamigawa or whatever and the Kami just fucking obliterated you, awesome

Man I wish. But I'm pretty sure that's never going to happen.

The heroes have to win sometime.

Yeah, but one, they just did so we got at least twelve sets of everything going the villains' way to go befoore they win again, and two, Phyrexia is never going to get "obliterated". Phyrexia will, at most, be beaten back after much effort and sacrifice and stuff and a minimum of one Deus Ex Machina. They will never just go into a place, get kicked in the dick, and go "oh fuck shit fuck, bad matchup, we're getting smacked here, everyone fall back into the portal and let's go find an easier target".

I wish it would happen, but it's not going to happen.

Oh, you just want a college football style one sided blowout. Yeah, that won't happen, but like, where is the tension and story in that? You spend a year building up to "The Phyrexians are coming" and then the heroes mop it up in a couple hours no big deal and then the rest of the story spotlight is about Ajani getting his nails did and his fur trimmed?

Honestly? I'm just tired of every story being about "heroes winning by the smallest of threads and one or more Deus Ex Machina against perfectly impossible odds" (in addition to the fact that I have been absolutely fucking tired of the very existence of Phyrexians since Invasion). It feels like most media lately needs to turn the villains into absolutely unstoppable, unbeatable juggernauts to a point that where the heroes win no longer feels "earned", it feels like "yeah, suuuure, whatever you say, bud".

So yes, I do want a story about the big bads not being absolutely unbeatable. I want the villains to also fuck up, to get partially defeated without a huge thing. I want the bad guys to get ruined on one set and have to rethink their approach and come back with a vengeance two sets later.

so I got annoyed enough by Cat Ovens a few weeks ago that I decided to make a UW Artifacts deck with Karn and a bunch of utility artifacts in the sideboard to wish for, (Grafdigger's Cage for cats, Stonecoil Serpent for Krasis, etc)

it's worked surprisingly well (Gingerbrute + All That Glitters has taken so many lives), but my favourite part is finding other decks that it accidentally counters. The Izzet Phoenix deck I went up against yesterday apparently did not realize everything that the cage blocks, because they still tried to cast Finale of Promise to turn things around before sheepishly emoting "oops" and conceding.

Gingerbrute and all that glitters is a great combo. I crushed an eldraine draft last night with that combo plus all the cheap artifacts and enchantments I could grab. Several 8 or so power unblockable gingerbrutes is too hard to deal with.

On the one hand, it's weird for promos to be focused on a different format than what you're playing to get the promo.

On the other, promos targeted at a singleton format makes them much more rewarding to get since you are gtg to use them if you want.

New Secret Lair drop coming January 27th, "Year of the Rat." Comes with 5x Rat Colony, and 1x of each: Marrow-Gnawer, Ink-Eyes, and Pack Rat, all cards are foil with exclusive artwork. $39.99.

Probably worth noting that foil Marrow-Gnawer is currently worth about $50, Ink-Eyes is $25 for the BoK art/$12 for prerelease art, Pack Rat is $9, and Rat Colony about $2.50 each.
