Yeah, I'm not following @Tox; what's your concern here?

When we submitted the Oosik Irregulars for canonization, I included all of that backstory in the e-mail to CGL. So while it might not be canon-on-record (the record being what's actually printed in the 2SW sourcebook), it's in CGL's possession in their deep lore files.

I've no intention on deviating from it, but at the same time for the purposes of any canon characters in the Clan Invasion era, I'm not sure it matters so much. At least from my point of view, the goal is to tie the canon record in the 2SW book (that says the Oosiks were "destroyed", remember) to characters that are operating within a fully functional merc org in the Invasion era that then is canonized by association.

Now, if you're questioning the professionalism of the unit as a whole....ummm, have you met us? We accept all kinds, as it takes all kinds. That's also why most Oosiks are more-or-less welded shut into their cockpits as MechWarriors (figuratively); the "Professional Mercs" are the few of us willing to make it look to the rest of the Inner Sphere like we're not a bunch of drunk morons. ;)

But everything about the unit is a joke, because stuff keeps coming up that starts out as a joke, and folks just keep running with it, and then it sticks and I end up feeling like an ass for wanting things to be more serious.

I think it's totally fair if you want it played straight with your canon character, and there's room for that. But I also think there's room for people to get wacky (within the bounds that CGL will allow), if that's what they want to do. Again, the Oosiks are a shared commodity; none of us have ownership of the whole.

For what it's worth, I actually am taking this reasonably seriously. Hence the questions and discussion, and my fine-honing of what I'm including in my notes. I want my canon character to be a believable guy, pushing papers for a merc unit that's akin to herding cats. I also want to balance that against what our actual, real-life community is and represents; we're a bunch of casual robot nerds from the Penny Arcade forums that have come together through some games that themselves can be very silly at times. The flavor of silliness varies, but you can't deny it's not there.

The trick is that, at it's core, it's a balancing act. It's also why I haven't submitted my character yet.

Also it's worth noting, I think those ARE jokes from DaMoon and Darkewolfe. I mean I can't speak for them, but I'm not seeing those exact kinds of nomenclatures passing whole-unit muster. And certainly not into canon.

But again, I'm nobody's mother here.

I did not actually think anyone would submit their character as Grand Keg MechWarrior.

Obviously that's classified rank information and we would adopt more common ranks for public facing documents. As our covert libation officer, I take our opsec very seriously.

What is this I don't even.

If you aren't carrying ammo in your Mech, is there any reason to eject from the Mech?

Seems like it would be safer to stay in the Mech during a battle than risk being on the ground.

Do the fusion reactors still blow up spectacularly?

I'd imagine a downed mech may tend to attract more fire if the pilot is still inside, since it's still a potentially active combatant (unless it's gotten both legs off or otherwise been reduced to complete ineffectiveness), but a mech that the pilot has ejected from stops getting shot at because at that point it's salvage.
So, I'd want to eject on the off chance that we still win and maybe get the mech back.

Alternatively, getting bounced around the cockpit when your mech falls over is probably less than pleasant. Not sure how it compares to ejecting though.

    1. No, Battletech Fusion reactors shouldn't blow up. They're designed to fizzle out and power down gracefully when damaged. Anything otherwise is a Stackpole Effect, and screw that guy.

    2. Ejecting sounds...not fun, based on the Sarna entry for the Full Head Ejection System.
Traditionally BattleMechs have used an Ejection Seat to remove MechWarriors from an exploding 'Mech. Though this technology is well-understood (having been available on pre-spaceflight Terra) the Lyran Commonwealth identified several problems: First the 'Mech was a total write off. Second a MechWarrior who used an ejection seat to leave the 'Mech was vulnerable in hostile environments. Third a MechWarrior could be seriously injured by the ejection process, with sharpened "glass" and metal in the cockpit stabbing and scraping the MechWarrior as they rocketed past the damaged cockpit framework.

I'd presume if it was a losing battle you wouldn't want to be in the first place the opponent would look for survivors.

Also with all the stomping around, being stationary in the middle of the battlefield is probably not the best place to hide.

I really think it depends on circumstances and era.

Rank and file FWL Mechwarrior losing a battle against the Lyrans during the Succession Wars? I probably stay in my cockpit, and wait to be ransomed back to my unit.

Clan on Clan combat? Generally staying in my cockpit, even if it means being taken as isorla. Maybe a little bit of a question mark, depending on who's doing the taking; some Clans are known for treating bondsmen better than others.

Mid-level noble from the Davions losing against the Capellans? I'd nope right the fuck out if I could, because capture means potential Maskirovka interrogation. Noooope.

Surrounded by terrain favorable to escape? Against the Wobbies during the Jihad? Or an enemy Clan during the Reaving? Every. Single. Time. I'm punching out.

I can't remember where I read this, but I'm pretty sure at least among the Clans, once you've ejected you're functionally a non-combatant.

Same for merc vs merc. If you've ejected, you're off limits, but that's more of an honor among thieves thing. House vs House probably has a similar understanding among nobles, but whose to say.

It probably also depends on the presence of conventional troops. If you've got infantry/tanks on the ground, I'm captured either way (unless I have my own that can scoop and scram).

Wasn't murdering ejected pilots a big thing in the Clan invasion? They'd only spare pilots they wanted to kidnap into their own forces?

Most of them look so much better than the order form images indicated. I originally was under the impression that they'd be solid color dice, so I went with Wolf's Dragoons for the red on black colors and because rolling dice with a merc company logo seemed appropriate. I still like how they came out, but I'm not sold. Hmm, might want to switch, but not sure to whom. Both the Lyran and FRR dice look a lot better than I thought they would (even after finding out they'd be translucent). Fed Com one is actually pretty neat too. If I liked the background color they usually use for Snow Ravens stuff I'd be seriously considering them as well...

The only one that seems like a big let down is the Draconis Combine ones. Why, for a faction logo that's almost always depicted as a black dragon on a crimson disk, would they choose to have a black disc on an orange die? Actually, all the ones that should have a red background are some variety of orange, which is weird. It works well for the Wolf Clan, but the DC, Kell Hound, and Blood Spirit dice look kind of sad as a result. I don't get why, it's not a technical limitation, cause there are great transparent red casino dice.

The Fed Suns one also seems like an odd choice, red on clear? I would've gone with some variety of yellow on a red-orange, similar to the Wolf Clan and Hell's Horses dice colors.

You can still change your order. I just did a couple hours ago.

I'm gonna end up with 5 clans (Coyote, Widowmaker, Blood Spirit, Ice Hellion, Snow Raven), and two houses (Lyran and Rasalhague).

I kinda like the Cloud Cobra and Star Adder, and would grab those, but I'd want another one to make it a full 8 and I don't like any others enough to go for it. So 5/2 it is. Dice and coins.

Looking at the discussion on ranks and titles and organization, I'm still happy with Dropship Pilot / HR Rep. I like the idea that, no matter what, the 'mech jocks can turn to the guy getting them in and out of harm's way for mediation and emotional butt-pats. If not Fruit Cup, they'd probably call him Big Momma in the fiction of that setup. :D

Honestly, if you're going for a unified rank system, I think getting rid of "Captain" as an explicit rank (since it occupies two very different pay grades in army & navy structures) and exclusively using it as a title to address the senior officer of a ship while they are aboard & in command, regardless of their rank (which it also is currently naval etiquette to do) makes a lot of sense. As I understand it, regiments are kind of a vestigial organizational layer anymore, brigades mostly operate as a set of battalions, so you could shuffle down the ranks of Maj through Col one spot each in army systems, and 'navy' ranks could be padded with Major between the Lt.'s and Lt. Cmdr's. This has the bonus that Colonel and Commander (and their respective Lieutenant forms) become equal as well.

Having thought better of it, we shouldn't have the rank of Captain at all.

I just feel like that's ... probably not a word you wanna say around a bunch of drunkards

Jeez. So this week our campaign's GM stepped back from the position to become a player. Today's mission was in a heavily forested area and they were the slowest 'Mech in our lance (HBK-4G). He spends whole turns trudging towards the center of the map, finally getting off a few shots at an OPFOR 'Mech that's already done for.

Next turn he takes a golden BB or a back hit or something to his left torso. Three crits. His only two crit slots were AC/20 ammos.

    He was understandably sour.

I think rank-wise the rank and file aren't always the tip of the spear, but in a lance the ranks could have one Key Grip and three Shafts. The Tip is in a command lance elsewhere on the battlefield.

As the dropship pilot I can tell you firsthand; you never tactically insert The Tip unsupported.

I've had one KS project fail, but I don't feel too bad for supporting it because it was one dude trying to make a video game and follow his dreeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaams. But yeah, that one failed hard. Even that said, he's gone on to make something of the failure, and roll his work into smaller things that he could release, so there's that.

And now that I'm looking at my Kickstarter pledge list....hoo boy, have a I given to lot of projects over the years. None so much as Battletech, nor as many as some board game nerds out there, but I had forgotten just how much stuff I'd supported over time.

My KS list is this, a couple of board games, and Mage 20th. This is probably the most I've spent on a single pledge, though my wife and I have almost the absolute entire collection of Zombicide: Black Plague, stuff, so that probably edges out total amount spent.

Meanwhile M20 is absolutely the longest delivery I've had to deal with. Worth it! But I think I'm still waiting on some of it to be delivered.

With all the cash I've thrown at this and the pile of minis that will be at my disposal, I'm going to change my rank to Director of Acquisitions

Between your love of battletech and Black Plague, i am officially becoming your second wife.

Well ive been looking for my "catch phrase" for my kickstarter character... and there it is.

Alright, I've written up my Notes for my canon character. It's late, so I'm going to let them simmer a bit a look at them in the morning with fresh eyes; I think I've said everything important.

I've also added the book/page reference to the {Member} note, if anyone wants to be pedantic like me. If you've already submitted the character, I'm to understand you can reopen the survey and change the fields and it updates the data on the backend, if anyone cares.

-"Paperwork" included all business and legal contracts, along with maintaining the unit's official history and TO&E

Some food for thought in regard to Oosik ranks.

In the real world PMCs don’t have rank structure. They operate just like any normal civilian company. They have project managers, team leaders, supervisors, etc.

Oosiks could be similarly run. In that the Unit itself doesn’t have ranks, but when out on mission you could have some (probably silly) terms to designate who is in charge of a Lance and who is second (and third and fourth).

That way you get to keep the Oosik feel of a free form Unit, but still have some organization when it is required. Plus that way everyone could be their own hero if they wish.

Edit- Hell, this way you can even have it as SOP that Lances decide who is running the OP and come up with their own dumb terms for rank structure before each mission. If you like the idea of getting silly with it.

“For this OP Axen Moon has been selected as the, uh, Lord Militant General Supreme of Bravo Lance. Seconded by Praetorian First Class Darkwolfe.”

Edit 2- the bonus of this is that PAers submitting their own characters for canon can give themselves whatever rank they want without breaking Oosik “lore”.

The answer is Yes But; those kits are made in resin, which means they pose the potential to be a total bitch to clean up and assemble. Not saying they will, but it's best to go in with eyes open and tools at the ready.

I will say, the renders look hot as hell.

-The Oosik Irregulars were reconstituted by the time of the Clan Invasion, contracted out to the FRR
-Brian "Hydro" Chapman joined as a Mechwarrior near the end of the Fourth Succesion War, but became the Director of Acquisitions because of already established connections with the black market. And also a large stock pile of various pieces of mechs and equipment already on hand in his completely legitimate business operations.
-He typically "acquires" parts and pieces through dealings on the black market or through contracts posted with the MRBC, which he like to refer to as "Repossessions".
-Joining the Oosik Irregulars allowed him access to lucrative contracts to fulfill black market supply chains. In return, he supplies the Oosiks with extra salvage, funding, and frequently himself (as a competent pilot), to further their operations as a unit.
-Rumor has it he was able to cobble together enough parts and pieces over the years to assemble his custom Catapult hes dubbed; The Ultracat. Its been said hes been able to almost max out the armor on a 65 ton chassis and cram in an XL300 Engine, 4 Medium Lasers and 2 Ultra AC/5s with plenty of ammo to spare.
