What also might help, especially with these landscapes, is rather than outlining the big shapes, have the big shapes be a certain VALUE (i.e. darkness level). I see some evidence of that thinking in the longer sketch, but I think using a BIG brush at the beginning (to define the big shapes), and then smaller and smaller brushes as you move into detail and texture could be a good approach.
