I just got back from the theater

    I feel

very comfortable saying Birds Of Prey is my fav comic film, at least of the modern era, maybe ever

Margot Robbie might be one of my fav actresses now? I came away from Suicide Squad thinking her as Harley was basically the one good part, now I'm absolutely confident she's the perfect person to be that character. And it's single-handedly gotten me interested in The Suicide Squad

    This was so much fun!

DC has announced the roll-out to 5G, a series of extra sized one shots covering the distinct eras of the DCU

Generation One: The Age of Mystery
Generation Two: The Age of the Metahuman
Generation Three: The Age of Crisis
Generation Four: The Age of Rebirth
Generation Five: The Age of Tomorrow

The first is out in May. The One-Shots will be written by Brian Michael Bendis, Dan Jurgens, Andy Schmidt, Robert Venditti, and Joshua Williamson and art from Doug Mahnke, Bryan Hitch, Mikel Janín, Ivan Reis, David Marquez, and more.

Andy Schmidt is referred to as the "lead scripter" so it sounds like the writers might just be, like, plotting ideas.

Honestly this is a very unexciting way to build up to a big revamp. The only writer out of that brain trust that I actually like more than "eh, he's fine" is Bendis. And Andy Schmidt is an editor and has only written a handful of things in the past 2 decades so his being the "lead scripter" is...very weird.

Plus the combo of no women or PoC on the writing staff and just the idea of HERE ARE 5 GIANT ONE SHOTS TO EXPLAIN CONTINUITY I am really not feeling it.

Even before this announcement, word was going around that all the big writers are avoiding this thing because they know fans are going to hate it, but they can't convince upper management that it's a bad idea.

The whole thing is starting to remind me of Before Watchmen. Except Before Watchmen was a side project that people could easily ignore if they found it distasteful. 5G is actually replacing the main universe, so there's no ignoring it if you're a DC fan.

The 5g rollout sounds iffy right now but I'm all for giving new /younger characters the spotlight even if it gets replaced in a year or two

Then I can have a side universe to write

Yeah I like the end result a lot, hypothetically

But boy they are botching the lead in

And it is a bummer because that means it is even less likely to stick for any period

So, some speculation based on the names of the one shots. I was thinking it would be neat if each generation were separated by six unique phenomena, and each phenomena leads into the next, like a chain reaction going off.

    Generation Zero: Gods Among Us
    Time Period: 20's and 30's
New Frontiers: The eight godrealms and the first superhero.
Example Heroes: Wonder Woman, The Spectre, The Wizard Shazam, Orion, Mister Miracle and Big Barda, The Demon, Zauriel
Example Villains: Ares, Simyan and Mokkari, Neron, The Demons Three, Trigon, Asmodel

Representatives of the gods begin to arrive on Earth, but few openly reveal themselves to the world. Instead, they plan and prepare, as if in anticipation of the events to come.

Generation One: The Age of Mystery
    Time Period: 40's and 50's
New Frontiers: The reawakening of magic and the invention of super science.
Example Heroes: The Justice Society of America, Giovanni Zatarra, The Freedom Fighters, Sargon the Sorcerer
Example Villains: Vandal Savage, William Zard, Per Degaton, The Thinker, Solomon Grundy, Axis Amerika

The presence of divine and demonic beings on Earth causes the power of magic, which has been lying dormant since the middle ages, to suddenly reawaken. As if in response to this chaotic new force, a generation of scientific geniuses emerges to perform miracles through the power of order and reason. The first public superhero and supervillain teams reveal themsevles to the world.

Generation Two: The Age of the Metahuman
    Time Period: 60's and 70's
New Frontiers: The next leap in evolution and outer space.
Example Heroes: The Justice League of America, Infinity Incorporated, The Teen Titans, the Green Lantern Corps, Highfather
Example Villains: The Injustice Gang, Brainiac, Starro, Despero, Mongul, The Psions, The Manhunter Robots, Darkseid

Exposure to the otherworldly energies of magic and super science causes the metagene mutation. Physical trauma that would normally be fatal instead causes rabid cellular adaptation, with superpowers being a common side effect. The larger galactic community, who up until now had been happy to dismiss Earth as a useless backwater, suddenly takes a keen interest in this new subspecies. Many of the divine and demonic beings who had been biding their time since the 30's begin to reveal themselves openly, making their play for the souls of humanity.

Generation Three: The Age of Crisis
    Time Period: 80's and 90's
New Frontiers: The multiverse and the dark side of superheroism.
Example Heroes: Power Girl, Blue Jay, Wally West, Justice League Detroit, Justice League International, Kyle Rayner, The Bloodpack
Example Villains: Bizarro, The Crime Syndicate of America, The Extremists, The Anti-Monitor, Psycho-Pirate, Parallax, The Bloodlines Parasites

Knowledge of the universe outside our planet leads to the discovery of the wildest and most dangerous frontier of them all, the multiverse of alternate realities. But unlocking this door proves to be a pandora's box, as it sets the cosmic supergod known as The Anti-Monitor loose upon all of creation. While the Anti-Monitor is ultimately defeated, his brief presence seems to have a permanently corruptive effect on the universe, causing an end to the sense of innocence and childlike wonder that dominated the previous generations. Some heroes become trapped in pocket dimensions, unable to escape. Others become prisoners within their own bodies, as evil spirits make them into thralls. Violent and grim new heroes begin to appear, fighting fire with fire in the battle against evil.

Generation Four: The Age of Rebirth
    Time Period: 00's and 10's
New Frontiers: The impermanence of death and the return of optimism.
Example Heroes: The JLA, The JSA, Young Justice, Green Lantern, The Flash, Irey West, Damien Wayne, John Kent
Example Villains: Alexander Luthor Junior, Superboy-Prime, Nekron, Professor Zoom, The Empty Hand, Barbatos, Perpetua

While the cloud of cynicism the Anti-Monitor seemed to cast over the universe is never fully lifted, the blurred line between heroes and villains begins to sharpen again as heroes from previous generations, thought lost forever, begin to return to mentor their wayward successors. But just as the light of the heroes begins to shine brighter, so too does the villainous shadow they cast grow ever darker. Forgotten villains who were once nothing more than harmless mischief-makers begin to take on monstrous new forms. A super baby-boom occurs as an unprecedented number of metahumans, alien citizens, and vigilantes have children of their own, taking on the new challenge of parenthood.

Generation Five: The Age of Tomorrow
    Time Period: 20's and 30's
New Frontiers: The retirement of the super-parents and the revolution of the super-children.

One century after the arrival of the first superhero, one generation of heroes lays down their capes and masks, adopting new administrative roles, while their eager proteges take to the battlefield. Can these young heroes handle the responsibility of ushering in a new age, or will their parents have to step in and resume their old mantles for the good of the world? Only time will tell.

As I said at the beginning of the post, it's just my personal speculation.

But I felt like I had to include a Bloodlines nod because there's no other story that captures the spirit of superhero comics in the 90's quite so quintessentially.

Like Gus said this feels both utterly shocking and also not surprising at all

He skated through so many disasters and flubs that his actual ousting is crazy

But post buyout DC got a lot more scrutinized and the parade of Editorial issues (Snyder's JL ending 11 issues short, with an event cliffhanger, King's run being very publicly cut short, books changing schedule last minute, the reported chaos that is 5G, etc.) Combined with both his public comments about not wanting to change with the times in terms of publishing models, Black Label launching with nationwide controversy and super delayed books and his constantly publishing extremely poor selling pet projects he wrote

It makes a lot of sense
