Is there a consensus on the Swamp Thing series that got axed? The set was released this week and I'm considering picking it up.

Everything I've heard is that it was really, really good and was killed by studio drama unrelated to the show.

Scuttlebutt was that someone fucked up and misunderstood how much of a tax incentive they were getting until well into the show's production. So all-of-a-sudden there wasn't enough money for the last handful of planned episodes.

Does Batman normally cover himself with hate fetishes and steep in pain like he's making organic Kurt Cobain brand tea? I knew he was maladjusted, but that chest plate is pathological.

That comic was wrong the day it was written and it's wrong today. Do you know what the character is describing, built for dexterity with large, intense eyes? An anime character. It's just a different style of art, are we seriously going to say western comics impossible body standards are a "male power fantasy" but eastern comics aren't? Or that both aren't sexually objectified?

As someone who's spent a lot of effort trying to put on muscle and felt very insecure about my body I have serious objections to brushing off the idea that comics/Hollywood aren't causing the exact same negative body image issues for men as they do for women, or that the male form isn't sexually objectified in these covers/posters like this.

Head looks a little odd on the new batman and the collar is a weird choice. Shazam or Man of Steel for best current DC flick so far I'd say.

Wonder Woman needed a better villain / better final fight. That ending was hot garbage and he looked like a bad porn star. No menace whatsoever. We're only two movies in and they're already bringing back the characters they killed too, what the fuck.

Suicide Squad, goddamn that stupid slow mo at the end. And these losers are who is going to beat this hilariously powerful sorceress?

The ending of WW was mandated, hopefully she has more leeway for a better one this time around. As for Trevor, presumably padt of the movie will be explaining wtf is going on.

I actually liked him too, but whenever a franchise makes up a reason to have someone popular return from the dead, the artifice of it really grates on me and it affects my opinion of the character.

Doubly so when, like here, it's ostensibly a female-led feature but it feels like the studio is preemptively buoying it with a popular male actor who ends up being the audience stand-in, so kind of the main character? And then he dies and it seems like it's making way for Wonder Woman to just be her own thing in a sequel but nah dude's back.

I probably sound more bitter about it than I am, the next movie looks fun and I'll probably watch it. I've been tailing off in my attendance to comic book movies recently, though.

By itself, a bat symbol made out of the gun that killed the Waynes sounds horrendously edgy as fuck. But then somebody posted the image from the comics where they did that with Batman actually explaining the reasoning, and after reading that, I was like... ok yeah that actually makes sense.

I'd just like to know how the hell he got the gun in the first place. What, it presumably just sat in some police evidence locker for decades or something?

afaik evidence in murder cases is usually kept for decades (pending appeals and such), so probably

although it'd also depend on when/if the shooter was apprehended; if he tossed it in the river minutes after the crime who knows if it ever turns up

I know it has Derek Mears as Swamp Thing, which is a pretty big deal for me. And it's supposed to be horror centric, which is right up my alley. Screw it, I've wasted $20 on less. Gotta support the Mears and Swamp Thing.

A guy just this last week was acquitted on DNA evidence from the scene of a murder after spending the last 15 years in prison. Murders are also not subject to the statute of limitations so yeah, that evidence really just sit around in a locker for decades.

Forget the guns. You have bows and a terrain advantage. If you jump down to go melee it out you deserve what happens to you

Also ancient Greek statues had color, why would the Amazons just let theirs bleach in the sun

Also also Fritz Haber was a real person and replacing him with evil protoNazis is an incredible disservice to the history of World War I and our attempts to learn from it

Going off how goofy the statues look while painted, I think time did us all a favor by wiping that unfortunate choice away

  • ThirithThirith Registered User regular
I’m pretty sure they mainly look goofy because we’re used to seeing them without colour, not because colour looks inherently goofy on them.

Eh. Modern sculptures in stone, bronze, etc etc are uncolored from the start. It's a cleaner look.

(I wonder how much the practice of painting statues was the result of "we don't have photography or even decent portraiture yet." It was their best option for enduring representational art of individuals, so that's what they used it for.)

Chicken and egg. Do we like them now because we have been influenced by "Classical" design? Or do we like colorless statues because those tend to look better?

I feel like if people were predisposed to prefer statues without color then the entire ancient world would've stopped at the original marble/clay/whatever and called it a day.

I think that Hollywood is causing huge body issues for men with the craze for really muscular male actors. Hollywood seems to do this thing where they take a talented new male actor with a normal (even very attractive) body type and make him build up muscle with the help of an intense personal training routine (and, I might guess but have no proof, steroids.) At least in the old days they tried teaching bodybuilders to act rather than turning actors into bodybuilders.

I've noticed online that any time a guy gets depressed and wants to turn his life around he feels he has to start by hitting the gym, so its definitely reaching into male body image.

But what it isn't for is women. When you look at teen heartthrob types, they tend to be a lot leaner and more like the Batman in the cartoon you are commenting on. I personally find six-packs repellent (but I can't speak for all women I admit.)

Saw Birds of Prey. I had fun! It reminded me a lot of a lower-budget Aquaman--funny jokes, enough plot to hold the thing together, but the plot is still a bit clunky and not all of the action scenes work out.
Despite how silly it was, the police station attack was delightful. The final battle in the fun house on the other hand just ended up feeling silly. But I did enjoy how they undermined The Crossbow Killer Huntress.

It's too bad it's bombing so badly because let's be honest: it beats the crap out of anything by Snyder. It's even a good time as long as your tongue is planted firmly in cheek.

I'm pretty sure they look goofy because there's only so much color information you can recover from a statue after the paint has been removed. The upper bound for statue coloration is photo-realism, (if that's the right term here) and there's no real reason to assume that the Romans were bad at painting statues. Many of the reconstructions look like the person doing the reconstruction was using the info as a paint-by-numbers guide, without bothering to shade, texture, or do any other advanced artistic technique. While there's something to be said for not putting in details we're not actually sure about, I find the current reconstructions dubious when it comes to the finer details, and those finer details are important if you don't want your work to look goofy.

For a modern example of what people can achieve with painted statues: (Work-safe)

Just finished episode 2 of Swamp Thing, and so far this is absolutely the best damned thing DC has done since DKR. This show is proof that hardcore horror and comic books can be artfully combined into something magnificent.

DC execs are fucking stupid, and cancelling this is the final bit of proof for that statement.

    Negative. I trust it's good?

Also, secondary super hero who shows up in Swamp Thing spoiler.
I dont know who Blue Devil is in the comics, and I'm not usually an Ian Zerling fan, but now I want my got damned Ian Zerling Blue Devil spinoff. And I want it now.

This is seriously good stuff. There's bits of The Thing, Buffy, Aliens, True Blood, Evil Dead, and all of the Swamp Thing media that came before. I'm simply loving all of it. Well, the eyes are hit and miss, and the bwaaawuhhh theme gets used too often. But that's all I have for complaints.

Of the four shows that launched the DCU streaming service, Titans was the weird dud that didn't belong. The other three (Doom Patrol, Swamp Thing, Young Justice S3) were shockingly good.

I'd be careful assuming that the ancient world had anywhere near the quality or range of paints and dyes that we take for granted.

You'd be surprised at how good some of the pigments were, though many of them were toxic (it wasn't until the last couple hundred years that toxic lead oxide white was replaced by non-toxic alternatives, for instance). There are many pigments still made today the same way they were tens of thousands, even hundreds of thousands, of years ago; I use Umber and Yellow Ochre all the time, and those have been in existence since before written language. But even for oil paintings, which are usually varnished thoroughly for protection, UV light is hell; well-maintained oil paintings can have their varnish removed and reapplied to continue protecting the painting beneath, but even paintings kept out of direct sunlight will probably need restoration after some centuries.

I dunno if ancient painted statues were varnished like paintings, but I'm betting you'd have to repaint statues in direct sunlight at least every couple of decades. The color quality could've been as good as anything modern depending on the selected colors, but constant UV exposure murders even modern colors.

Doom patrol is interesting because at it's core it's about a group of people who are fundamentally broken at the most basic level who live together and happen to have powers as opposed to being a team of super heroes.

Also, they fight some of the most straight up bizzare shit you can imagine.

Coupled with being four of the more unique super'd characters I've seen (Cyborg excluded), including Jane, who's 65 shades of awesome.

And the cast they gathered is way better than I thought it had any business being. How does Titans (of who I recognized only one actor from previous work) get what seems like a throwaway spinoff that has Alan Tudyk, Brendan Fraser, Matt Bomer, and Timothy F'n Dalton?

Doom Patrol felt like they went "Oh, you think the DC stuff is too dour and 'realistic'? Fine, you want bonkers shit, here's some bonkers shit."
Like they're trying to find a level where people go "Oh come on, this is too much", but they can't.
I loved that they had a villain who respects the fourth wall even less than Deadpool. He'll dump on the heroes. Then the show. Then the audience for watching the show.

Nobody remembers the singer. The song remains.

And at the same time, DP is extremely dour but in a way that makes us care about the characters and what they're going through.

It's almost like they earn it or something.
