Have you seen the Netflix She-Ra cartoon?

Because that is leagues better than it ought to be, and it seems to exist purely out of an example of what happens when talented people try to make a good cartoon.

I wanna hear Mark Hammil's Skeletor "Nyah!" though. That's the only thing I liked about He-Man.

    Nyah!

i unabashedly love the incredibly stupid lore of he-man, but i don't know how that translates in 2020

I think it's possible to make a decent cartoon out of something that existed for the express and exclusive purpose of selling cheap plastic junk to dumb kids, but it's real tough and I'm not sure Kevin Smith is someone I'd give that project to

here's hoping, though! that cast sure is interesting!

For me it's Kevin Smith being involved, as well as it being billed as a direct continuation of the 80's cartoon

Independently both of those seem like terrible ideas

Together? I feel like that's a trashfire you could see from space

I'm willing to hear Smith out but yeah if you're pointing to She-ra as proof that an update of this type can work its important to remember that it worked by basically tearing the whole thing down and using the trappings of She-ra to tell a very modern story.

She-Ra getting rebooted into a really good modern cartoon is proof enough to me that you can take some goofy ass 80s property and do something clever and great with it. The He-Man reboot being...a sequel to the original series is...not exactly what I would look for

Interesting swerve in the story, can't say I saw that particular thing coming. I figured there would be something, but not "woman drunk drives and kills someone, then falls in love with the victim's fiancee". B-plot was good too, but Grey needs to figure out what he actually wants, if it's the bar or Other(tm). And Hoffman's Dad was a great asshole lawyer that loves his son.

Also we got another, cover of song turning into original version of song when the fist fight gets going, bit which I continue to like.

On the subject of another High Fidelity adaptation which no one brought up:

I watched a couple of episodes.

It's surprisingly decent, if you're looking for a messy drama about music and breakups. Rob's a tough character. Obviously they're kind of a disaster, but the show does a decent job of making them less insufferable than the Cusack version. It pulls a lot directly from the book, and strikes a tone that's pretty similar to the movie, but Zoe Kravitz carries it through the sheer power of her seemingly limitless charisma. She walks this particular line significantly better than Cusack did. The movie was very into making Rob out to be the entitled, put upon hero, and I feel like the show is more interested in making Rob come across as flawed but earnest.

It's also, weirdly, a half-hour drama, and it feels pretty good in that format. It's paced really well and doesn't overstay, like a good 10-song album. Misery and pop music and all that.

    Exactly.

Rob is a nearly irredeemable shitbag and Zoe is impossibly likeable.

So it strikes a real weird balance and I just keep watching.

At an hour per episode, Rob's misery would turn into pointless wallowing. At thirty minutes per episode it feels engaging and important. I think, aside from the really great casting, the half-hour runtime is the smartest decision this show made.

well, part of the reason the show went off the air in the first place is that a lot of people in India found the show's portrayal of Ghandi offensive! plus, unlike many other shows that got second lives on places like Adult Swim, Clone High never really showed up on any other service. I think you can maybe watch it on some MTV site that I don't remember how to access
