They are coming to Edmonton with Run the Jewels which is never a thing I thought would happen and yet here we are! Canada tours are usually just Vancouver>Quebec/Toronto.

I'm sorry, I think you meant to say "it's me, the guy with excellent taste in music."

I've seen them live twice, and walked home hoarse and deaf both times. They're incredible on stage.

The only bands I've seen who tops them are Iron Maiden and Sabaton.

I saw Sabaton four times in the fall and have zero regrets. I’m a big Hammerfall fan as well so The Great Tour was *chef’s kiss*.

So... y'all wanna talk about metal some more? Because Thy Art Is Murder is on tour and I'm super stoked to see them live, especially since Fit For An Autopsy is with them and I missed them when they were here in October.

Primus has announced that they're going on tour this summer and playing Rush's A Farewell to Kings album in its entirety at every show, followed by a set of their own songs.

I'd never really dug into John K. Samson's second post-Weakerthans solo album

Not out of any real disinterest or anything, I just overall prefer his Weakerthans stuff

Anyways, the joke's on me, because it contains two songs that conclude the Virtute the cat saga and I just made the mistake of listening to them at work!

My brain sometimes feeds me a tiny piece of a song and I get to spend the next hour or five trying to figure out what the fuck it's from as my anxiety builds up and nothing will release it but figuring out the song and wait do I have OCD, is that OCD.

It sounds like OCD when I write it out like that.

Oh, some context to those posts for anyone that doesn't know:

The Replacements had long said they wouldn't make music videos, but they'd signed to Warner Bros. and of course the label wanted them to do videos. The band agreed to do a live TV show, thinking they'd never get picked for anything given their reputation.

The label got in a good word with the SNL guest scheduler and when the Pointer Sisters had to cancel their appearance, he called on The Replacements. They were disliked by most of the cast and crew almost immediately, and had to sort of smuggle beer into their dressing room, where they had drinks with host Harry Dean Stanton.

Then they played that set, during which (you can barely hear) Paul Westerberg tells Bob Stinton "come on, fucker" to prompt Bob's solo. You can also see Bob's ass through a tear in his pants when he does a somersault.

Lorne Michaels was furious and banned them from the show, and threatened to have them banned from ever playing on TV again. It was 3 years before they performed on television again.

I learned yesterday that WAAF, a pretty big hard rock radio station from Boston, is going off the air this Friday. Like, yeah, with most rock radio they played a bunch of butt-rock and almost non-stop Led Zepplin/ACDC/Pink Floyd and 80s glam rock shit, but they were one of the stations I listened to back when I was in high school and starting to get more into music, so this is a pretty big bummer for me

They were apparently sold to a company that plays "contemporary Christian" music, which is also what happened a few years ago to an alt-rock station I used to listen to

Wow, WAAF was a huge part of my teenage years. But then again, I don't even listen to radio anymore so I guess it isn't super surprising.

There is something genuinely uplifting about part four, even if it is a song called Virtute At Rest

Like honestly I think part two is the worst, emotionally speaking, but that might be some of my personal bias creeping in as I had something similar happen with a pet when I was young

Not sure if this is the right thread, but I'm interested in opinions around the different Music streaming options? I have Tidal right now and really like it from an interface perspective. However it's lacking in video game music like Final Fantasy and it's lacking the ability to look at local files (which would make up for it). I was messing around with Apple Music as I was able to get it with my cell plan, but I'm not sure how much I like it. Seems you need iTunes to do any local file stuff and it's just not super intuitive. I think the only other option is Spotify, which seems to be doing some content grabbing, so I'd have some more podcasts. Poking around their interface, seems more like Tidal (which is good), but everything was a playlist? Is that because I don't have an account or do folks have to load their music as playlists and that's all you can use?

Interested in any opinions. My ipod nano 3rd gen is still kicking but I really should work on getting the same playlists and stuff setup somewhere else in preparation for when it kicks the bucket haha.

I think that's just because you don't have an account, that doesn't sound like the Spotify I've used before.

I believe based on a "paying people for their labor" scale, Tidal is supposed to be the best, followed by Apple Music, Google Play, and then Spotify (and Amazon and Youtube somewhere below that), but there's not a whole lot of transparency there, so it can be hard to tell where that's actually going.

Also I recommend Google play music because 1 the ui is actually usable and 2 it comes with premium YouTube so no ads on YouTube ever.

Spotify’s mobile app only lets you do mixes and playlist if you aren’t subscribed. On a desktop, it is basically the same experience pay or free.

I use Spotify a bunch because it has the deepest selection of music (Tidal claims to have more but they inflate their numbers a bit by just have one song off certain deeper cut albums that Spotify will have in full). I'm currently also using Deezer and I'll give it a close second especially if you want HiFi audio, and I find it's personalized playlists to be on par with what Spotify offers.

I absolutely did not enjoy Tidals UI and found its search function completely frustrating as well IMO.

Also, you should be able to easily find 1-3 month free trials for any of these services and give em a spin (currently on 3 month for Deezer).

I already used up my trial for Google Music/YouTube and if it weren't for my curated playlists I'd go back because damn YouTube ads are aggressive these days.

Deezer looks good, but it seems to be basically Tidal again. They have some Distant Worlds and such, but I guess Square-Enix only made deals with Spotify and Apple. However they do allow for local files.

I'll do some digging. It may come down to which one has the easiest way to upload local files. Maybe I just need to bite the bullet and download iTunes.
