Living like introverts: a [COVID-19 lockdown] survival resources thread

edited March 2020 in Debate and/or Discourse
The mods will be creating new threads Soon(tm) for actual COVID-19 news and resources. This is not one of those threads.

There's a growing number of people that are going to be spending weeks (months?) in lockdown/quarantine/shelter-in-place, and while we try to weather this pandemic, there's some very amazing people out there trying to help us all make it through, particularly those of us with kids. This is a thread to collect all resources like this, to make it easier for all of us to share and find said resources.

Starting with:

mo.doodles.head.jpg

Mo Willems, children's book author and illustrator, has started posting a weekly* video teaching kids how to draw and also talking about some behind-the-scenes stuff about his process and history. He released the first video today: https://twitter.com/The_Pigeon. I put an * on weekly because it said weekly but at the end of the video he said "see you tomorrow" so maybe he'll be doing it daily instead, can't tell for sure yet.

Another resource: McHarper Manor is going be posting a bunch of free weekly craft projects for kids to do: https://www.mcharpermanor.com/post/supply-list-for-our-first-week-of-projects

Basically, feel free to post/collect resources for making these weeks indoors fly by, especially (but not limited to) those that are specifically providing free resources/videos/etc to help us all get through this together.

In addition, there's a YouTube channel called Science Mom that is starting up a daily two-hour livestream called QuaranTime all about science experiments and lessons for kids:

If I get sent home from work in the next week or so, like I expect to, I vow to use my time wisely.

    1) Start using my exercise bike every day, to get some exercise.
    2) Do a spring clean, and general purge of unnecessary crap.
    3) Fulfill my life-long ambition of finally playing through the other 2 faction story lines in Elder Scrolls Online, and the expansions I bought but still haven’t played through yet.
    4) Watch either The Wire, or Breaking Bad.
    5) Do my Destiny 2 dailies, every dat I’m off.

In reality, I’d settle for 3 out of the 5.

Also, this requires creating a (free) account, but The New York Times is putting up daily writing prompts for students to write stories against. We do this already for our daughter (we homeschool her) and she loves the random prompts, but I'm guessing the ones posted here would be good too:

As an Introvert I have tons of things to do at home like paint my 40k stuff [sadly I need to get more primer} I have tons of books to read/reread and the general cleaning I planning on doing when it got warmer
But my hellish summer and into the fall/winter lean times showed me how little food I can live off and still function. Just getting it is the problem

The Metropolitan Opera has cancelled their upcoming performances.

But they are actually streaming past Opera productions for free on their website.

    Tonight's Opera is/was Bizet's Carmen

    https://www.metopera.org/

Just in case you were wanting to give Opera a try, but never really had a chance before.

And if the Met isn't enough, the Vienna operahouse is doing the same: https://www.facebook.com/wiener.staatsoper/photos/a.10152346775795717/10163324267780717/?type=3&theater
THE WIENER STAATSOPER IS CLOSED, BUT CONTINUES TO PLAY DAILY ONLINE!

Like almost all major opera houses and concert halls the world around, Vienna State Opera had to cancel all performances up to April 2, 2020. Great restrictions in private and public life are to be expected.

In this difficult situation, Vienna State Opera is now opening its livestream archives, so that music lovers all over the world will still be able to enjoy opera and ballet. Starting on Sunday, 15 March 2020, Wiener Staatsoper will broadcast recordings of previous opera and ballet performances daily via its streaming platform http://www.staatsoperlive.com – worldwide and free of charge. This online programme will even follow the originally planned schedule at the house, with a few exceptions only. Streams start at 7 p.m. or 5 p.m. CET respectively (for Die Walküre, Siegfried, Götterdämmerung) and remain available for 24 hours.

After registration at www.staatsoperlive.com the subscription can be booked free of charge until further notice. Subscribers of http://www.staatsoperlive.com or customers who have already bought single tickets for the livestreams planned for the time of the closure will be contacted directly. Contact for all questions regarding this offer: help@staatsoperlive.com

Please find the complete programme here:

I can't save enough about Great Courses Plus. It's a Netflix style college lecture site with hundreds of various courses on a wide range of topics. I love the history and art ones myself. It has a free trial, and in my opinion well worth the subscription. I'm currently finishing up an Egyptology course on there which has been excellent. They recently released a revised app and website. Check it out!

Looking for something completely off-the-wall to keep a grin on your face what with sports all shut down?

    Try marble racing!

Jelle's Marble Racing has different events and races, from several years of the Marbleympics to cross-country to the current rage, Marbula 1. There are lots of different races and competitions posted to watch, and currently new races are posted every Saturday (qualifying) and Sunday (races).

What makes these so special? There are teams. The marbles are named, and the events are narrated like a major race or sporting event. There's even a "live" stadium audience... of more marbles.

As a librarian, I came here to recommend this too. Some library systems also have access to video streaming sites like Kanopy and Hoopla. Kanopy in particular is one I wish I took more advantage of; they have a lot of Criterion releases, including The Seventh Seal.

And while a lot of libraries are now closed to the public, my own library system and a neighboring county's library system are allowing people to sign up for temporary online cards that give patrons access to many of these resources. Once they are open to the public, you should be able to walk in and pick up your physical library card.

New house isnt quite rural, but pretty close. There's a bit of a hill between us and the mall area that's about half a mile away and our back yard is the darkest sky I've seen since I was a kid. Talking my wife into getting a nice reflecting telescope to try and get the boys into.

In the mean time, making a hardware store run later for some stuff to finally build this fancy charging station my wife's wanted for two years for all the tools and battery and and controllers and some pockets with various adapters for guest cell phones and shit, all mounted on pegboard in a frame with the cable nightmare hidden inside.

My wife actually believed me when I joked I needed a power ratchet for the job. Don't tell her.

    Bodyweight exercises!
OK - This program is directly scalable to your strength and cardio ability and will evolve and become harder as you become stronger and are able to complete more sets.
As a total body workout, it can be done in virtually any park or backyard in your home town or even in a car park. But it’s a very intense 12 minutes (minimum), so you need to have a water bottle handy.

This body weight training circuit hits every major muscle group and will build hard, dense, strong and fast muscle fibres.

***Each exercise is performed to maximum reps until failure or a duration of 60 seconds; whichever comes first. Rest for a maximum of 60 seconds between exercises; there are 7 exercises with 60 seconds rest in between equalling a total of 12 minutes from the start of your first exercise to the end of your last exercise. This is geared to shred your frame of fat and build hard muscle. If you still have energy and strength to do more exercises after completing the 7 exercises, then start the circuit again and do as many exercises as possible.

Half or partial range-of-motion reps are allowed if you have exhausted your full R.O.M strength within the 60 seconds– just try to get to that 60 seconds of muscle movement.

    1. Push Ups - for 60 seconds

Get into push up position, straighten your arms with hands under your shoulders. Keep your hands in this position as you bang out max rep push ups while pointing your elbows BACK with each full-range downward motion. Keep your arms 'close' to your body - do not flare out your elbows. Try to keep legs straight wth knees and ankles together! Breathe deeply, in through your nose and out through your mouth. If you tire, proceed to partial reps to complete the 60 second time duration.

    Rest 60 seconds

    2. Double leg squat jumps -for 60 seconds

For these, stand with feet shoulder-width apart with toes pointed slightly outwards. Bend at the knees, lower your butt down and then jump as high as you can, almost straighten legs and then land smoothly, bending at the knee, using it as a ‘shock-absorber’. Use explosive plyo-metrics to launch your butt high into the air; reach up with both hands to maximum altitude. Land back down to earth as smoothly as possible using both legs as steel-spring shock absorbers. Go the full 60 seconds, even if you finish by doing pathetic little micro-squats. It’s all part of the process; you will become stronger! Rest 60 seconds then move on to the next exercise.

    Rest 60 seconds

    3. Push-through crunches - for 60 seconds
Find a flat surface, get on your back, bend knees, feet flat, point arms forward then raise your back and shoulders - curl at the core/abs - and push your hands through the gap between your knees.
Keep your neck tucked in to your chest. Exhale as much air out of your lungs as possible; take short sharp breaths, exhaling on the contracting/up movement. Use your abs to lift your back/shoulders. Aim for as many rets of ten that you can do in 60 seconds.

    Rest 60 seconds

    4. Human Plank & Side Plank - for 60 seconds
These are great static holds for total core strength and toning. Do them anywhere, anytime – aim for 60 seconds, then build up to 2 minutes and more. Exhale everything in your system. Hold your body up on forearms (elbows under shoulders) and toes, pointing straight down. Take short, sharp strong breaths throughout. Do not ‘rest’ or ‘push’ on the balls of your feet by arching your back; all the weight pressure should be pointing down vertically. When you get strong enough try variations such lifting alternate feet off the ground for as long as you can or progress to a side-plank.

    Rest 60 seconds

    5. Bicycle Crunches -for 60 seconds
Get on your back, put your hands lightly behind your head, then raise your shoulders/core and twist your shoulders so your elbow reaches towards your opposite knee (eg; left elbow to right knee), which you bring up towards your chest. Be sure to extend your other leg out nice and straight. Do them fast and smooth – every single one you do means a flatter, healthier stomach. So go for it! Aim for 60 seconds non-stop. Do these as often as possible. Stop immediately if you feel any pain.

    Rest 60 seconds

    6. Push Ups Part 2- for 60 seconds

Get into push up position. straighten your arms with hands under your shoulders. Keep your hands in this position as you bang out max rep push ups while pointing your BACK with each full-range downward motion. Keep your arms 'close' to your body - do not flare out your elbows. Breathe deeply, in through your nose and out through your mouth. If you tire, proceed to partial reps to complete the 60 second time duration.

    Rest 60 seconds

    7. TOE-TOUCH AB CRUNCHES - for 60 seconds

Hop down on your back onto the ground, exhale to minimise the air in your lungs, contract your core, lift your head and heels off the ground for a second, then simultaneously reach your fingers up to meet your toes as you raise your straight legs off the ground as high as you can go.

    END CIRCUIT.

IMPORTANT! - If you still have energy and strength to do more exercises after completing the 7 exercises in the allotted time, then start the circuit again and repeat as many exercises as possible.

YOU CAN AND YOU WILL SUCCEED! NOTHING CAN STOP YOU!

    OPTIONAL EXTRAS:

If you have a access to a Pull up bar: Pull ups

Grab the pull up bar with your palms facing forward and commence pull ups to max reps, even if it's ONE REP. When you can’t do any more full reps, proceed with partial reps. When you are too weak to do partial reps then just hang on the bar for as long as you can... until your finger grip diminishes and gives in and you drop off... Then, if you can, grab on again and try to complete the 60 seconds on the bar.

Hanging leg raise ab crunch (using dip or hang position)

You can do these hanging from a bar or on a dip bar. The trick is to keep your knees together and lift them up as high as possible to your chest very quickly. Then lower them slowly- but only as far as your thighs are parallel to the ground, it’s quite a tight, short movement; about 30cm – do not lower your knees all the way down. You must maintain core intensity throughout. However, when you are totally spent, you can go to partial reps to complete the minute.

    FAQS:
Replacements for Jump Squats: Lunges, single leg squats, super slow squats
Extra back/shoulder work: Pull-ups, inverted rows, Dumbbell rows (use milk or something heavy!), jumping jacks, Pike push-ups

Project Gutenberg is still a thing and has over 60,000 ebooks available for free with no limits on access, no registration required, and nobody will be tracking you for future marketing purposes.

Here's a page with a ton of links to education companies offering free subscriptions while schools are closed. The page itself is inundated with ads sadly, but there's a TON of links here:

    Sharing from the parenting thread:

For parents stuck at home with their kids with no idea what to do next, might I recommend this...

    o4lyias9bnea.jpg

My friend of 30 years is doing free, online art tutorials to anyone who wants to watch. Mostly beginner and tutorial stuff for kids 10+, although I imagine younger kids might enjoy the stream. He's extremely talented and laid back, so it's worth a watch.

You can find his stream here.

Cooking is also something people should be thinking about. Gotta prep your own meals as restaurants are shut down, it's a good life skill to have anyway, could be something different to do with the kids, or if you just need something chill and relaxing you can watch some Townsends cooking videos.

Does anybody know if https://www.netflixparty.com/ works well? Considering using it to schedule movie nights with friends/family/coworkers.

It was awesome when the Xbox 360 Netflix app had that functionality back in like 2011. It seemed ridiculous to me that they dropped it. Glad to see it being resurrected, in a way, and if it works! (Even if it only works on Chrome, what the hell.)

Anyone learning to play piano, or with a kid learning to play piano? Hoffman Academy already has a ton of free lessons on YouTube, but they shared a link today of a bunch of "popular" songs kids might enjoy more. (The overworld theme from Super Mario is on the first row....)

Playbill has a list of 15 Broadway shows that you can watch at home.

I see streaming options like Amazon and Youtube, but I'm guessing those are rental and/or for Prime holders, so probably not free.

    Edit:

Also, some fun things to do with the kids at home?

    Wool/Yarn dyeing!

This is the ChemKnits Tutorials Youtube channel and Rebecca has a few hundreds of videos about dyeing wool at home.

Food colouring, Easter egg tablets (which should be conveniently in the stores right now!), candy sprinkles, Koolaid, and other household goods, as well as some other commercially dyed stuff.

Wool yarn dyeing like this requires an animal or protein based yarn (wool, alpaca, silk for examples), acid (Rebecca usually uses white vinegar or citric acid), and heat (microwave, steaming, or simmering in a pot, or even solar dyeing!)

Ellie and I have done this a few times on long weekends and LOVE doing this.

This is sightly more pushing for a friend, but a high school friends of mine does remote private lessons and is offering first lessons free.

What other games are good online for nongamers?

Jackbox games and online Codenames and pictionary type games so far.. any other good online board games or simple games to do with friends?

(In other news, a local club / event space that i like is both doing online streams of dance music and other content e.g. https://nowadays.nyc/ )

I will never not hype the shit out of Star Realms. It's a deckbuilder available on mobile, Steam, and as an actual card game. It's easy to learn, has a great meta to master from set to set, has a TON of content for cheap, and I think the base game is free. I'm pretty sure your purchases from one version carry to another version too (excluding the physical card game).

Any of ya'll old Mtg players that gave up on the cardboard scene because of poor local support or just feeling priced out, Arena is goddamn fun. I've got multiple decks that would cost literal hundreds in paper magic, entirely free (I haven't spent money since rotation so most of the cards I 'bought' aren't included in that).
