Quarantivity (or how to stay sane while working from home forever)

CelloCello Registered User regular
Hey! You! I want to hear about the things you're doing or learning while self-isolating at home for the next however many days. Tell me about your projects, artwork, workouts, model kits, cleaning techniques, whatever!

Today, I've been working on an entirely scratch-made chicken tikka masala. That meant a garam masala and tandoori masala spice mix, garlic/ginger paste, a basic curry sauce, and chicken marinade. I've just got to BBQ the chicken skewers later and make the finished sauce! After that, I made a sourdough starter and am excited to bake my first loaf in several days!

I've also set up a little schedule for when to check my e-mail, be productive, etc. and found some specific exercise routines I want to do - yin yoga in the mornings, and strength or cardio in the afternoon/evenings. Apparently I want to emerge from my house as an extremely fit chef at the end of this!

What're you choosing to work on for the next while?

(Sidenote, if we can try to keep things positive in here that'd be great - there's already enough to be anxious about in the media and I'd rather see folks' silver linings.)

I am going to complete the proko figure drawing and anatomy courses that I paid for but never completed.

I may try to follow along with a Bob Ross episode.

I'm going to make bread until I'm good at making bread. I may try making a cake from scratch as well. I have always used a box-mix like a scrub.

Also a looooot of Animal Crossing.

I made myself one of my patented Really Good Grilled Cheese Sandwiches. Country loaf slices, four slices of medium cheddar, lots of butter, pan. With some cream of mushroom to dip in.

I'll probably try to get a sourdough starter going and start making weekly bread again.

I’m in the military and we have been quarantined to our ship since Sunday, which is not overly different to our standard working arrangement save that we’re currently alongside. Which means we can see land... We can see houses from here. As you can imagine, we’ve already invented several games which are potentially lethal and would constitute psychiatric help in the civilian world, and the beer has all already been drunk.

What does this mean for me? Time. Time to write more of my novel that has been gathering dust, time to focus on physical training (stomach and back mainly), and time to play roleplaying games! You’d be surprised but most folks are up for it, and I’ll no doubt have a one-shot set up by Thursday for six players!

Well I had been marathon training, but that finally got cancelled today. Gym's closed though so I can't lift, gonna stick with long runs every day (typically anywhere from 1:20 to 3ish hours)

Today I called and got my car payment deferred a few months as part of their disaster relief program, considering that an accomplishment

I've got a library book I've been putting off finishing, but mostly I've been digging in to TV: A few episodes into Resistance, the last Star Wars show I haven't seen; watching Garo (finished the first series, slowly working through some movies before I move on to the second), finally seeing what all the Schitt's Creek hype is about (just finished season 3). In addition to my weekly shows

Marvel's Outlawed thing finally starts tomorrow and I've been very excited for it. My shop said they're doing curbside pickup-- though that was before the order to close nonessential businesses went out, so we'll see

I'm working from home so I actually don't have more time to spare than usual, except for not going out at all in the evenings. Normally I'd do painting or something but all my paints are in transit somewhere in the midwest. So I'm churning through some TV backlog.

... also I may or may not have just written to a Leonberger breeder << >>

I also have links to a bunch of Great Pyrenees rescue sites, but since we're on lockdown I can't get out to visit any shelters or anything.

I'm supposed to be working on my edTPA portfolio but my motivation has been killed as I don't know if the state will excuse it due to our current situation (should know more tomorrow).

So instead I'm going to spend the day writing up curriculum maps for classes I could conceivably teach in the future.

I am painting so many god damned minis.

I took my first commission job a week or so back, painting the full collection of Gwar's minis from their Rumble in Antarctica game, because fuck yes, it's awesome.

Just finished Oderus last night, minus his sword.

I've been working from home for a bit over a year in a new place where I have to drive to go anywhere, so I'm kind of already adjusted... I think a big part of it for me has been acknowledging that while I can sort of do anything at any time it's really important to try to keep to a schedule even if it's just splitting up "work on stuff (literally any useful thing) | unscheduled loafing". Doing useful things at midnight because you let the whole morning and afternoon get away from you is bad.

Also Ring Fit and having some exercise equipment. Exercise is always good and being home all the time makes it easier to make sure you fit it into the day.

Also if you can going out for walks is nice! Doing it in the morning and evening is a good way to separate a day.

Oh! And sleep way more. Actually sleeping for the time you need makes a lot of stuff way easier.

Take a moment to donate what you can to Critical Resistance and Black Lives Matter.

I’m still in the office 3 days a week and while I feel very privileged to keep working a tiny part of me was hoping for more time at home because boy do I have a backlog of stuff

I have a huge bin of fabric I’m itching to turn into more clothes and maybe a new bag

I have a lot of yardwork to do; now that we’re emerging into spring my poor yard is looking so barren and weedy. I planted Indian plum and Salal and wild ginger and kinnikinnick this weekend and I assembled a giant bed I need to position and fill

Also my pile of books and games is pretty immense

@Moriveth baked bread with the kiddos over the weekend and I was remarking that we need to teach them more kitchen skills! Especially after seeing my friends’ 7 year olds making whole meals.

I'm a full-time dad so this is my everyday, man.

My wife is still at work while almost everyone else in her office (about 50) is working from home. She can walk to work so she's holding down the fort with 1 or 2 other folks. It's possible their whole organization will send everyone home, in the next few days which would be nice.

Literally the only change is I can't take my son to community things like preschool and playgroup and stuff, or city run things like the library or the pool. They're also advising against using playground equipment which suuuucks. So we're going for walks everyday (thank god the weather just turned nice). He's only 2 so he's not completely freaking out with boredom, he's usually cool to just play with toys while the tv is on in the background. I am relating to this tweet with my entire soul

I'm working from home. The tough part will hit on the weekend. I really feel for the folks that work my usual Friday and Saturday night haunts.

I was vaguely hoping that since I could do it solo that I could go flying, but that got nixed with the Bay Area's soft lockdown.

With the weather getting nice I’m hitting the gardens and cycling with equal fury. Plenty of digging and root cutting to clean up the plot from last year. Cycling in relatively empty trails while carrying all my supplies in a backpack keeps things distant enough.

This has demolished my podcast backlog. Gonna have to dig into more audiobooks by the end of this.

I am currently playing a pen and paper roleplaying game that is for just one person. It's called Thousand Year Old Vampire and it is mostly just an excuse to read Wikipedia articles about medieval history.

But also just a lot of my standard stuff - I semi-regularly worked my job from home already, so while I absolutely miss the outside world, there are parts of it that don't feel too different yet. If my partner ends up having to stay home as well, that might change things, but currently her work is deadset on having people come in (even though they absolutely should not be).
