if somebody had said something about the shade's vulnerability to fire during the last tournament then he wouldn't have made it past the third round
it totally just occurred to me today
in one of his journals that's in the fourth trade he mentions a big theater fire
an actress he likes is stuck in it but he can't get to her
Yet fire is not my friend, nor that of the creatures I create from the shadows, so I was powerless to do anything but sit there and await the bad news.

Fuck you, shitfucker, that's not what I do. What I do is this: I look at each contestant and their powers and personalities and weaknesses, and I pick the winner accordingly. If I'd known about the Shade's weakness to fire, I would have adjusted my picks accordingly.

To be fair, sometimes a small flame significantly weakens martians (like when Batman made a ring of fire to beat up three white martians) and sometimes a martian can be completely engulfed in flame and still not be hurt (like when J'onn got lit up by nanobots). Then there's the whole thing about it having never been firmly established as to whether J'onn's fire weakness is a physical thing inherent to his race, or a mental thing gained from seeing the millions of funeral pyres burning across the surface of Mars. J'onn's powers and weaknesses seem to fluctuate pretty erratically.
