Picked Bannerlord back up because I am weak and mods and patches have fixed a fair few of my issues with the game.

Got my cavalryman leveled up enough and joined Vlandia as a vassal. Right now the faction balance has been in favor of Vlandia, who has been at war with the Southern Empire for most of the game and has swiped most of their holdings closest to Vlandia. After my warband went on some adventures into Empire territory, beating up much larger forces and gaining a large amount of influence, Battania declared war on us and took a castle. In response, the king summoned a massive 1700-man army and marched us from the ass-end of Vlandia all the way to the capital of Battania, Marunath. I replenished my troops and joined in, and it was only through the grace of my very robust food stores that the army even had enough food to last the trip, and were one day away from being out when the siege was finally ready and we assaulted the city.

After the siege, the question of who gets the city comes up, and I had enough influence built up from basically being the sole source of our army's food that I was able to apply enough leverage to score myself a faction's capital city with its surrounding villages.

    Feed your troops, people.

The nice thing about being part of a starving army is you get quite a lot of renown for sharing your food with them. But I do think the AI needs to handle resupplying itself better, seems like every 500+ army eventually starves.

I'm trying to make something happen in the banner maker, but it's either not possible with the way it's set up or I'm missing something. I essentially want one of the images you can add to be split down the middle with one color on one side and another color on the other.

Say, I found one of my old Lego soldier shields in the dirt today. Dunno how many years it was buried in the yard, but it's still in pretty good shape. Could somebody that is pretty good see if they could recreate it (or close to it) in the banner editor for me?

Also it's worth mentioning for anyone who has a super complex banner for their faction: if you join another kingdom as a vassal (and maybe even as a mercenary?) your banner will be forcibly changed to conform to their color scheme.

Any background patterns you make will be changed to a solid color matching the faction, and your sigil, no matter how complex or colorful or multi-pieced, will change to another color to match the rest of your allies.

I'm guessing the piece it would change would be the last one in the list, so making a zero width symbol for that might avoid it, but the background would still change, which potentially could be cool.

I'm starting to think that Battannia is just... not very good. They're jacks of all trade, masters of none, as opposed to the Empire who actually are decent at everything.

I may be extrapolating from incomplete data, but I've not seen Battannia win a multiplayer game yet, and it always feels like I'm at a disadvantage when I'm made to play as them.

My experience with Battania is that their cavalry are functionally worthless but the Oathsworn are very generically good and between peasants having access to 2H axes and their shock infantry being solid you can absolutely massacre once you get into a big melee.

The tough part is actually forcing that when so few troops have shields.

Is there a command that sends out horse archers to go skirmish and harrass the enemy army?
Like every battle begins with the enemy horse archers opening things up trying to skirmish and Id like to return the favour, but I prefer to hang out with my stabby cav so I cant really micro-manage the horse archers with the 'move here' command. So is there any button combo I can press that will just let them go do their thing?

Figured it out. its F6. removes them from your command so they go do their thing

So is there any button combo I can press that will just let them go do their thing?

    From Reddit:

    ""Advance"

-Melee infantry - moves towards the enemy in a formation and keeps a 5-8m distance moving either forward or backwards depending on how the enemy moves. This can be useful to move them closer to the enemy in a tight formation like shield wall, before ordering them to charge.

-Skirmishers (Melee with ranged) - Same as above, but they move to a distance where they can throw their ranged weapons and keep that distance.

-Archers - Same as skirmishers, but they keep a much longer distance between them and the enemy, but still so that they're able to shoot at the enemy.

Note: Like a friendly user suggested, be wary of using advance command on archers if the enemy has cavalry, since your archers retreat unnecessarily from them when they're using hit and run tactics.

Instead try using the Stop command once they are in firing range.

-Melee Cavalry - They move as a formation and on my tests always clash at the enemy formation. Requires to order them to charge in order to get their full fighting potential out of them.

-Ranged Cavalry - they move closer to the enemy and then try to keep their distance while shooting at them. They try to avoid melee at all cost unlike with the charge command. I found out that cavalry with javelins will get too close to their enemies. So the charge command was best for them since only then they actually started circling their enemies.

    "Charge"

-We all know this one. Your units attack in an unorganized manner to kill everything that breathes.

    "Fall Back"

-The unit will fall back in an formation until they're ordered to do something else or untilthey reach the borders of the map

    "Retreat"

-The unit will retreat to the border of the map and then out of the battle. (This can be valuable to those players who refuse to save scum and want to preserve whats left of their army)

So I've never really used the advance order, but after testing it out I figured that it can be really useful and saves you from a lot of the micro management you have to sometimes do with your units.Keep in mind that they really do advance and fall back in the formation you ordered them to.So if my any chance you ordered them in a column formation, they even retreat in a line and keep 2-3m between them. So your whole formation will be dead before even the fifth guy has joined the retreating line.

    "Stop"

-Your units will stop to their tracks. They won't even return to their formation.
    "

Basically Advance is your "do the smart engagement" button

I think you can also hit F6(?) and it has the AI take over, like when you're in someone else's army and they're giving the commands.

  • GokerzGokerz Registered User regular
I found that when playing defensively putting my cavalry on F6 is really good, because it will automatically split into two groups and dynamically protect both my army's flanks. Would be far too micro intensive to do that myself.

I'd like some advice on what to do now. I've been puttering about for a while and the map has deteriorated to 2 powers - Vlandia and Khuzait.

I picked an empire start for my guy and kind of want to stick with that.

I'm pledged to Northern Empire but we have no settlements. I took a weak castle and it was given to another clan that first banned me from entering it and then lost it again.

It seems that to get a sizeable army I need to give my companions parties of their own, but that seems to always end with them losing a battle and their soldiers.

So what should I do? Pledge to the Vlandians/Khuzait and work for them? Try to take settlements for Northern Empire? Go solo and start my own kingdom?

What I did was swear fealty to a faction. It is a pretty good way to work up renown and thus increase the size of your army. Plus you can always go solo at a later date after you’ve made a name for yourself.

This is super helpful stuff about the orders. What this game REALLY needs though is a default setting. Something that says "until I say otherwise, here is how you will behave in battle: infantry start in shield wall, archers start behind, melee cavalry on a wing (s), horse archers under AI." You can adjust it on the fly, but being able to go into a battle with a set template would be incredibly helpful.

There's a tactics option that actually lets you set up before you start I think it's 75 for tactics

I saw that, but also heard it wasn't working. And lord knows getting up to 75 in tactics would take a long ass time of struggling for a feature that seems pretty critical.

Story time: the North Empire went war happy on my Empire (the South) and hired what seems to be every mercenary company in the world.

Unfortunately within a few days their Emperor wandered into my army and got himself captured and since then they haven't fielded a cohesive army, instead choosing a strategy of having dozens of individual 20-50 man armies that cant do anything but avoid the bigger Southern armies

Thanks to our larger armies that were assembled with the goal of actually taking cities we eventually we got them down to a single city, Epicrotea that seemed to spawn armies as fast as it was humanly possible.

The Battarians and the Khuzaits both joined the war and attempted to take Epicrotea, but both failed in successive sieges. (it had a ridiculous sized garrison plus all the lords/mercenaries inside it)
Then came the Southern Kingdom. 1450 men, (260 of them mine, with my army being the largest and most experienced component) versus 780 defenders my biggest siege so far!

We had 2 siege towers and a ram. I went with the right side siege tower, let about 15 men go before me and then climbed up. Fought my way onto the wall, through one tower, across the gatehouse, down a tower, then up some stairs to go assist the left siege tower as they were still furiously fighting to get onto the wall.

As I approach the stairs I watch bodies fall off the wall, one after another. Turns out there is that many bodies crowded around this siege tower that basically no-one has room to actually swing a weapon and everyone is pushing everyone, theres a pile of bodies 4 deep with all the pushing on top of the pile. Its basically that scene from Game of Thrones; Battle of the Bastards episode only on a castle wall.
I spend a good 3 minutes watching bodies get pushed off the wall/slip off until victory was ours!

Nice bloody siege, only thing that annoys me is I still can't get given any castles or a city. I've helped capture half a dozen, got the largest individual force, have fed every successful siege because n-one else is bringing food and yet everytime its time to award a castle I dont get it, even if everyone else votes for me, the Empress is like 'I'll give it to some other chucklefuck who didn't even help capture it'.
I just want a city, instead of my one castle way down in the South West far from everyone else.

Is combat supposed to be this clunky? It doesn't feel satisfying at all. I'm just at the tutorial trying to get a feel for the combat, and the AI constantly attacking seems kind of busted as well as the general "aiming" of attacks. Also not a fan of tying attack swings to direction of mouse or keyboard movement (neither feels particularly good).

On foot, the goal is to interrupt their attacks by blocking and then landing your own attacks. This means you want to look at the direction their weapon is coming in at and block as close to the impact time as you can. The closer it is, the more recoil the enemy experiences. Shields don't need to be as exact in terms of positioning but most still don't offer full coverage so you still should aim your blocks to a degree. After blocking, your mouse cursor is already in position to ready an attack based on where you already are so you just go with whatever attack that is for your counter attack. Early on, you're not going to have the skill to do a barrage of attacks and don't have the armor to really do it safely anyway. Early game enemies often go down in 2 or 3 melee hits so you don't need to land a lot of attacks anyway. Your movement and looking around is much more about positioning and defense. Your attacks are much more about what's opportune based on your positioning than trying to deliberately go for something.

Better weapons also help, obviously they do more damage but they'll have other benefits over the starting weapons like longer reach.
And the more you practice the better you get at timing weapon strokes to actually land, so your not just swinging and missing.

try other weapon types too. I started out wanted to use single handed axes but found them (for me) to not be good. Found a tier 5 sword amongst some loot and found out swords were much better for me.

Axes have a pretty clear role of just demolishing shields that helps make up for their lower reach or slower swing times.

Know what really inspires fear? Playing multiplayer entirely in first-person. It's so intense, especially since everyone else is in third-person and has better situational awareness. Big melees are pure fucking chaos, even more so than usual. Duels inside a building aren't so bad though

It's something you pick up on real quickly in multiplayer where Battarian rabble are carrying two handed axes that literally blow shields apart in two strikes.

How do you manage more than one party? If I let them wander off, they'll eventually lose a battle and the party. If I create an army so I can have them with me, the army cohesion will eventually force me to disband the army.

Seems like I'm limited to my own party and it's a little hard building an empire with ~100 troops.

    New day, new patch:
    Multiplayer - Other
Added a maximum limit to the number of characters a player can type in multiplayer chat (500 characters).

    Crashes
Fixed a minor crash in the main storyline.
Fixed a crash that occurred upon completion of the “Lord Needs Garrison Troops” quest.
Fixed a crash that occurred upon completion of the “Gang Leader Needs Weapons” quest.
Fixed a problem with fading out agents without fading out their mounts. This especially affected quests and when you equipped your companions with mounts.

    Performance
VRAM leak fix for the Party screen.

    User Interface
Fixed a bug which applied changes without deducting funds from the player when switching screens from the bottom left menu.

    Clan and Party
Lords and minor faction party leaders will now visit settlements to trade if they are carrying a lot of loot (especially after successful battles and raids).

    Kingdoms and Diplomacy
Ending mercenary contract with a kingdom through dialogue will no longer result in a relationship loss.

    Economy and Trade
Fixed a bug where bartering items with lords that were staying in settlements was not possible.
Made some economical management improvements to clan leaders’ finances over an extended period to try and reduce the chances of them becoming too rich or too poor.

    Quests & Issues
Sending the culprit from the “Family Feud” quest as an alternative solution to an issue is now blocked.

    Conversations & Encounters
Bandits will now surrender more easily if their opponent is vastly stronger than them.

    Other
    Simplified Chinese translation improvements.

Amazing thing just happened in a siege.
Im watching our siege tower reach the wall on the right side of the gate and some troops start climbing up, then abruptly stop and climb back down and begin running to the left side of the gate where some ladders are stashed

Just as they all safely reach the ground, a flaming catapult shot lands right on the assembled defenders, flattening about 20 of them in what I thought was a one of a kind shot

30 seconds later a second catapult shot hits the same spot, killing another 20+ guys who rushed in to defend against the abandoned siege tower.

Whoever was operating that catapult is getting a knighthood

Edit: In the ensuing vote to see who owns the settlement I won! I own a city at last! and the 2 castles next to it are mine aswell. Things are going great this game!

So I restarted mostly for the companion fix, and on day 100 I now have a capable scout (yeah) and and a master engineer (meh, might be handy later). Plus the usual fighters.
What i did do differently this time was buying workshops (Woods as the are apperently the most profitable). I now have 3 and it almost pays for my 75 man/girl army. Amazing!

No more end of the day "you loose 564", I actually made a profit at some time before I upgraded some dudes.

    Another small patch today:
Fixed a rare crash that occurred when players created their own kingdom in the main storyline.
Fixed a crash with the text management system.
Fixed a rare crash that happens when attacking a besieged settlement after an external interruption to the world map siege occurred.
Fixed a rare crash that happens when attacking hideouts after leaving during the attack and returning to the preparation.
Fixed a bug that made the “Escort Merchant Caravan” quest's remaining days an unreasonable number.
Fixed a bug that occurred when determining opposition kingdoms in the main storyline.
Fixed a cloth simulation issue which reduced FPS in big battles.
Fixed a flickering issue with flag marker UI elements.

Okay, getting pretty sick of the "find the nobles" quest (yes, I broke down and started playing). Sometime mentioned a mod or something that let's you teleport to the remaining lords to finish it off? I'm having zero luck finding it and I'd really appreciate any help.
