I never understood that Man on the Moon movie, what IS the point of calling the movie Man on the Moon if it has nothing to do with the moon? IS andy kaufmann alive? Or is he really dead?

He apparently had been having problems sleeping since he starting playing the Joker.
    According to who?

    The New York Times:
He tends to do that. He is here in London filming the latest episode of the “Batman” franchise, “The Dark Knight.” (Mr. Bale, as it happens, plays Batman; Mr. Ledger plays the Joker.) It is a physically and mentally draining role — his Joker is a “psychopathic, mass-murdering, schizophrenic clown with zero empathy” he said cheerfully — and, as often happens when he throws himself into a part, he is not sleeping much.

“Last week I probably slept an average of two hours a night,” he said. “I couldn’t stop thinking. My body was exhausted, and my mind was still going.” One night he took an Ambien, which failed to work. He took a second one and fell into a stupor, only to wake up an hour later, his mind still racing.

Even as he spoke, Mr. Ledger was hard-pressed to keep still. He got up and poured more coffee. He stepped outside into the courtyard and smoked a cigarette. He shook his hair out from under its hood, put a rubber band around it, took out the rubber band, put on a hat, took off the hat, put the hood back up. He went outside and had another cigarette. Polite and charming, he nonetheless gave off the sense that the last thing he wanted to do was delve deep into himself for public consumption. “It can be a little distressing to have to overintellectualize yourself,” is how he put it, a little apologetically.

Conducting a tour of the house, which he is renting for a few months, he made wry remarks about the art. One painting depicts a crowd of creatures who appear to be in hell, but who seem determined to extract as much sexual pleasure as they can from their eternity of free time; Mr. Ledger has turned another one around and hung it upside down, to no apparent ill advantage.

An open bag with clothes spilling out lay on the floor of the master bedroom. “I’m kind of addicted to moving,” Mr. Ledger said, perhaps on account of having had to shuttle back and forth after his parents’ divorce, when he was 11. He carries his interests around with him, and his kitchen table was awash in objects: a chess set, assorted books, various empty glasses, items of clothing. Here too was his Joker diary, which he began compiling four months before filming began. It is filled with images and thoughts helpful to the Joker back story, like a list of things the Joker would find funny. (AIDS is one of them.) Mr. Ledger seemed almost embarrassed that the book had been spotted, as if he had been caught trying to get extra credit in school.

He seemed like such an awesome guy.

The song "Man on the Moon" by REM is about Andy Kaufmann. Hence the title of the movie.

Now, why the song was called that? Mainly so it sounds pretty.

Playing the joker apparently mentally and physically drained him, or so the interview with him linked on the last page says.

EDIT: They're talking about it on CNN Headline now.

That interview said he lost sleep frequently when he threw himself into any of his roles. I don't think it was death by Joker.

Like I said, I think it's the pressure/depression of his divorce, along with possible drug problems.

I keep hoping its gonna turn out that they've mistake some guy for Heath Ledger, but by now his publicist would've relayed such info to the important people.

Assuming that Joker survives this film nad leads into a third, they would have to replace him but, as against him as I was at the start, he looked and sounded the part. I can't imagine anyone else pulling it off with the same character.

I can only hope, in my heart of hearts, that this is someway tied to the viral campaign and some rediculous hoax... It seems to be in bad taste, but someone earlier is right in that it is exactly what the joker would find funny.

It would seem kind of unlikely, seeing as all the major news networks are involved, but its not impossible. Would it be illegal, i've seen movies based on fake deaths of some celebrities like pauly shore and carrot top...

Again, highly unlikely, but I'm hoping.

Batman looked great and I liked most of his other stuff too.

Setting aside the sadness and mystery around Ledger's death, the story did theoretically call for the Joker to be in the third film and films beyond that, as Nolan had intended for the Joker to remain a nemesis to Batman for the future of the franchise.

For this to happen, they'd have to hire a new Joker. And the only person that LOOKS like Ledger is Joseph Gordon-Levitt, seen here:
    cover_story-1.jpg

    josephgl4.jpg

Apparently he also has acting chops, as The Lookout was very well reviewed. (He's also the kid from Angels in the Outfield).

I just wanted to point him out since I know we're all thinking "What will happen to the franchise?" at this point.
