Dual montior setup issue

Verla LombardiVerla Lombardi Registered User new member
Hello.
Is it possible while using a dual monitior setup, that having one plugged into the integrated gpu port and the other in the dedicated gpu(geforce gtx 1080) that your pc restarts itself no warning and no blue screen? I've been trying to narrow down my issue for weeks and everyone just ends up saying temps or psu. It's neither all I'm asking is: is what I've described possible yes or no? If it's not then it will make my troubleshooting much much easier.
Again please just simply is it possible for this to happen yes or no?
Thank you :)

If it's just restarting/shutting off without a blue screen or a crash dump you're looking at heat or a power issue. If something is physically failing, possibly a short or bad capacitors on the motherboard/PSU. Could also just be draw from the GPU if your psu isn't rated high enough (500w+ should be fine)

Use something to monitor heat like CPU-Z. Physically check the board for bad capacitors, they will look bulged compared to other capacitors and possibly be leaking if they are bad. They also smell like maple syrup when they fail, this is more evident in the large PSU capacitors.

To address your specific question, was it working fine before the 2nd monitor?

You really should be running both off the gpu.

Only thing I can think besides a power issue is that when you went into the bios to enable discrete graphics to run the 2nd monitor off your mobo that something else got changed in there.

I've never heard of a PC functioning at all with both onboard and dedicated GPU running together. It wouldn't surprise me in the least to have that happening - usually plugging in a dedicated GPU disables the onboard in BIOS.

The 1080 has multiple video ports, get yourself an adapter if you have the wrong cable and do this the right way.
