I think I’m gonna get out of litigation/insurance law at some point

Obviously every kind of law is stressful and never really morally pure but working cases for big insurance companies is... less so, I guess?

I used to practice law for big insurance subrogation too. It was mostly suing poor people for money they didn't have. That was when I started having really nasty anxiety attacks. Not fun.

EDIT: stupid autocorrect doesn't know legalese.

Most of my experience and time have been with probate, and it feels pretty good:
People come to us to get wills and trusts drawn up, to make sure their wishes are followed and their loved ones are taken care of. And we give them the assurance it will be done, just like they want.
And then later/on the other side, people come to us in what's often one of the most stressful times in their life, when they're dealing with grief and everything else, and we tell them: it's going to be okay. Your loved one(s) thought ahead, and made a plan, and now we just follow that plan; and when it's done, you'll have closure on that part at least.

Now, sometimes it gets contentious, often for much the same reasons as divorce - people arguing about who gets what - but most of it, IMO, is about compassion and making/following a plan.

Yeah, I was thinking of looking into probate/family law. Family law would also be divorces and stuff too, which... rough.

yeah I will note that any time you're doing really good work in the law you're almost certainly working exceptionally hard, losing frequently, and not getting paid as well as your peers.

I'm back to work tomorrow after two weeks off.

While I've been away, our tasks within our team have all changed, so I'm going on tomorrow with no idea of what I'm doing and no clue if the things in going to need access to well be available to me.

Yeah, divorce cases are tough. As an older wiser attorney once told me, "there is no such thing as an easy divorce case."

Though I did have one once. A few years after I stopped working for insurance subrogration and debt collection I worked for a small general practice firm. One day a little old lady came in and said she wanted a divorce. Turns out her husband abandoned the marriage 30 years before, but the marriage was never officially dissolved. She wanted to treat herself for her 70th birthday to finally get divorced. So it was shaping up to be a mostly easy divorce. The only catch was I had to find the husband. Best guess was that he was living somewhere in southern Louisiana.

So after some internet sleuthing and the help of a private eye from New Orleans, I tracked him down. In the meantime I researched Massachusetts law about giving notice in other states (basically, if the notice is good for that jurisdiction, it's good enough for Massachusetts.) It was good I did this because the guy really didn't want to be found and the private eye wasn't sure he'd ever find the husband in person (not without a ton more money) So luckily Louisiana law at that time allowed notice to be made at the last known address which was a lot less strict than Massachusetts law.

When I finally brought the case before a judge, the judge got very suspicious that I didn't serve proper notice. Luckily I came prepared and cited the law that allowed me to use Louisiana law. The judge, impressed, granted the divorce right after that. The whole thing went super smoothly.

That Christmas I received the nicest Christmas card and letter from the little old lady thanking me for all I did. Made me feel all warm and fuzzy.

(Later the older wiser attorney responded to my story, "cards are nice, but did she pay you??" Yes, yes she did.)

I'm adapting to WFH kinda too well. Initially I didn't like it because I quite liked socialising with the team, and because leaving work at work has always been a big thing for me. I've never liked doing homework, and I didn't think I'd be able to work - or at least work well - while at home.

Turns out that actually I can work pretty well. Purely because the remote desktop connection is a little unreliable and a lot slower that when I'm in the office, I'd say my productivity is probably about 75% of normal because my hands aren't the size of fucking mouse paws, and laptop keyboards are for mice. But that still seems to put me well above... some other people.

So my alarm goes off at 8:30, I put the kettle on and make toast or whatever, open the back door by the spot where I work to let sunshine and fresh air in, and put some music on. Log in 9:00 and get started in a quiet sunny place where I can watch the sparrows come and eat the seeds and crumbs I put on the doorstep. And I get stuff done. It's not that hard to concentrate at all! And it's nice! I feel pretty OK when I finish!

I don't miss the commute, I don't miss shitty canteen food, I don't miss their crappy office chairs, I don't miss being moved to a new desk every 2 months. I can chat with my work homies on OCS, which if it's not face to face, is also a deeply familiar and normal method of communication to me.

I wouldn't mind transitioning back to a routine where I'm in the office 1-2 days a week - it's really not that far, about a 30min walk. But if they just drag us all in to do 5 days a week, it's gonna feel sad and unnecessary and burdensome and dumb.

Just give me the proper USB-C hub I asked for so I can run 2 screens and a proper keyboard, you schmucks, and I'll be at 95% or 100% or more productivity!

Looking like we're tenatively planning to be open on the 15th, so unless I hear otherwise, that's when I'm back to my commute.

I'm not exactly looking forward to it, but at the same time, I am looking forward to having a work/life separation again.

So far so good. It's been steady, but so far we haven't had any long lines or enraged patrons. I'd call this a successful soft launch.

A saucy old lady did ask me where I get my hair permed, but that's just the kind of abuse I'm willing to tolerate for the free flow of information.

If you design online training that has narration 1) Talking very slowly without any way to go faster while the narration is largely reading the text verbatim and 2) requiring the user manually click after each sentence/slide and 3) Not allowing the advance until the narration is complete, you should be required to serve time in a maximum security US Federal prison for the amount of collected user time you've wasted.

edit: OMG, I have to click to advance each bullet point within a slide

    Plaintiff side I take it?

To me, having done work on both sides of tort litigation, no one's hands are clean overall (some cases are plaintiff's trying to get money they don't deserve and others are doctors trying to avoid paying for mistakes they made), but the insurer's hands are always dirty.

Yeah, plaintiff side. I'm certainly not assuming going to the other side would be morally pure, but... yeah. Insurance companies are always trying to give out less.

Sadly no. Not in real life, either, which is great because actually running an airport is even worse right now.

It's basically portfolio optimizer for aviation fuel. It's also a title that's in play in one of our parent companies, the big worldwide one, so it's also a kind of "in" there. It does mean that I have to give up my old title, which was special to me because someone for some reason allowed me to make it up myself. But c'est la vie.
