How reliable is GoldenCasino? I wouldn't doubt this, considering the stock in retail locations, but wow.

    https://goldencasinonews.com/blog/2020/06/01/nintendo-switch-sales-jumped-60%-in-a-year-reaching-557-million-sold-units-in-march/
By the end of February 2020, the number of sold Nintendo Switch units rose to 51.5 million worldwide. However, with a global surge in video games playing amid coronavirus lockdown, a new 4.2 million units of the popular console were sold in March only, with the combined number reaching 55.7 million.

edit: Really curious where these numbers are coming from since GoldenCasino isn't linking sources, and every other news site is just citing them as a source.

edit2: Regardless, Nintendo's own financial report says they sold (to customers, not just to distribution) 7.67 million units from Jan-Mar 2020 in NA alone. 18.1mil "Worldwide" (Japan, NA, EU)

We already know March Switch sales were double that of March last year in the US, so that figure is potentially in the ballpark.

Still, worldwide sales numbers? Either they're leaking an embargoed Nintendo press release or they're making shit up.

I think regardless of the actual numbers, it is a really good time to be in the video games business. I went into a Fred Meyer the other day and their games section looked like locusts had gone through it*. They had so little new product available that they had dug a bunch of old Xbox 360 Skylanders sets out of some back room to fill up the empty shelves.

I rather regret passing up on Ring Fit all the times I saw it in the Before Times, but at least I preordered my Animal Crossing switch instead of waiting to see one in the stores to decide whether it was really pretty enough to warrant buying one.

    * To be fair, I used to live in corn country and the locusts I encountered do not play video games as far as I know. It's a metaphor. Simile?

Curious to see the April/May numbers in due course too. Not least because that's when I went from mulling one over to deciding to get one to managing to hunt it down without having to resort to scalpers. But a scalper will still count as a sale to Nintendo, and the only real constraint is going to be supply to that point. With production temporarily halted and potentially still slowed for a while afterwards, just how cleared out were the supply lines? The sales have to be comparable to March but I wonder if they'll be a little higher or a little lower.

Hey, Animal Crossing edition Switch twin! :bro:

    (Also, metaphor. I think.)

So I've been playing overwatch lately, and realized the need for a traditional controller. Is the pro controller the go to, or is there a third party one y'all recommend?

Most people say either the official Pro controller or the 8bitdo SNES style pro controller. Or you can get that 8bitdo Bluetooth adapter and just use an Xbox/PS4 pad

Yeah if you want/need a larger controller with amazing battery life you go with the pro. If you need good D-pads and a smaller form factor then you go with an 8bitdo one.

I have two pros and 2 8bitdo controllers.

In case someone missed this: drifting joycon sticks might be solved by using contact cleaner (WD40 seems to be recommended online, I used another domestic brand). I tried this and it solved both my drifting left sticks. Not sure if this is a temporary or permanent fix, but worth a shot in case you are vary of disassemble your controller.

How does this work? Dose the stick, wiggle it around?

Yep! Lift the rubber skirt at the base of the joycon, spray just a tiny bit of cleaner and move the stick around for a bit. Let it dry out for an hour or so and you're good to go. It's not recommend to have the joycon powered on before drying out.

Just a can of WD40, huh? Might do that to my neon set that's drifting, currently using the grey cons from Switch release day that are working fine. Pretty sure my drifting started due to KidGrime. Keep special electronics away from toddlers, folks.

Do NOT use WD40! At least not the bog standard blue can you're probably thinking of. Everybody says it'll just make it oily and attract more dirt.

What you specifically want is "Electrical contact cleaner". There is a specific version of WD40 that is that, and that's safe. But make sure it's "Electrical contact cleaner".

That's why I wanted clarification. Irked that the formula name is the brand name now, rather than the specific product, but I can't Karen at their Marketing Manager so whatever.

FYI that Waterfield is back open for business. The Switch Lite case I ordered showed up today and it's wonderful. The site images don't really convey how quality this thing is (which for the price it damn well better be lol). I went with the pouch for the Lite, for an OG I would recommend the Pack for the extra space. I *can* fit an OG in the pouch but it's a tighter fit than I'd be comfortable with for frequent use.

I felt like it did start off slow too. Which is odd because they pretty much set you up with everything you need early. I think like, they are starting with a little bit too much boring badges instead of throwing in a cool on here or there.

I was totally hooked by the first real boss fight though. I don't find the presentation bad at all either. But I tend to like Indies of much worse production value anyway. This game looks solid. The gameplay is definitely top notch and it has plenty of stuff to do.

Does Bloodstained run like absolute garbage on the Switch in general, or do I need to reinstall it from scratch or something? Like, I saw it was a disaster on release, but supposedly most things had been fixed. I've had two outright crashes, slowdown and stutters are fairly regular, and I just went through the train section, and christ. Having the timer up just made it obvious how much the game was struggling to maintain a framerate. If this is what fixed is... yeesh, I can't even imagine the original release.

You shouldn't need to do a reinstall. But then again I'm probably one of the few people who hasn't noticed any issues with Bloodstained on Switch.

From this I infer you already purchased the Switch version, but have yet to play it yourself? Grow that backlog, collect all the titles, yes. That is the way.

I played and enjoyed it on the Switch. There was definitely a little slowdown in any areas, but I was fortunate to not have any crashes. If performance is a premium to you though, definitely look at the Steam version.

For me, curling up on the couch and playing a metroidvania was absolutely a critical part of the experience, so that added to my enjoyment way more than the slowdowns detracted from it. Priorities will vary, though, and I understand that completely.

  • Options
    urahonkyurahonky Registered User regular
Those of us who think anything under 20fps is painful on the eyes made it unplayable on the Switch. Even after all the optimizations. I hate that I paid for it twice but in the end I wanted a metroidvania game and definitely got it.

If you are at all sensitive to slowdowns and stuff like that then you should avoid it on the Switch.

My mom bought both my little cousin's switch lites for their birthdays and watching them carry them around hurts me in my soul i have seen them drop on the ground already three times in a week and each time i feel like my hearts about to leap out of my throat.

Also cleaning the screens every day has been a chore.

Sounds like they need some late birthday flip case/screen protectors!

I grabbed Virtua Racing on sale, after checking out the DF Retro video on it. It's weird that it took so, so long to get a genuinely great home version of the game, but it really is an incredible port. It has the most astonishing array of split-screen modes I've seen in any game, ever (2 players can even go cocktail-table style, while it maxes out at a whopping 8 players simultaneously, previously only possible in a huge arcade). The sale price is like four goes on the arcade machine if I could even find one now. And this version is a Switch exclusive. Highly, highly recommended.

In fact I might do a mini-review for the OP:
    • Sega Ages Virtua Racing
    • $7.99 (eShop only)
    • Arcade racing
    • F1 meets Out Run, maybe?
    • Groundbreaking 1992 racing game from the early days of fast 3D in arcades. The Switch port is upgraded from the original arcade game, courtesy of retro wizards M2, with big performance improvements and even replicating the arcade's 8-player setup if you're so inclined. Great fun in short blasts without eating all your quarters!

I have literally dropped my OG Switch face down on a bumpy bar floor and then accidentally kicked it, sending it skidding across the floor. It was fine. Maybe I was just lucky but

My Genki Dock arrived this week. First impressions are that it does what it's supposed to - plugging the Switch into it seems identical to the standard dock. It'll be nice as a second charger, and easy to throw in my bag when travelling. Seems like a nice bit of kit.

Wow, thanks! It looks like it’s almost everything online, except for some obvious stuff. It’s actually easier to list what isn’t online:
    • Slot Cars
    • Fishing
    • Team Tanks
    • 3 Solitaire games
    • Sliding Puzzle
    • Piano

So, 43 games with online play. And you apparently choose 3 to match with other people online? Interesting take I guess. Will be interesting to see if the game offers more games down the road as DLC.
