I think what you're going to run into relatively quickly at this size is that the details will set the scale. That's a really fun scratch-build, but right now it would look really weird beside a dropfleet ship because it's lacking in surface details. Don't get me wrong either - that shit is _hard to pull off_, and I think you've made something genuinely cool. But if you aren't going to - for example - define some panel lines or smaller forms, you're looking at painting some of those in instead.

Get cheap model kits for a ship and a truck. Use the bridge parts, access panels, wheel hubs, anything with some like "knobbliness" to it to add to the ship. It's a process called greebling, and it will make a huge difference to how the scale appears.

I sometimes hate being in mini painting Facebook groups. I saw this really awesome looking Necron tomb spyder and it is making me question my paint scheme.

Tomb spyder for reference. Absolutely not mine.

Because of this I played around with a different Necron scheme on impcat and I'm kind of really digging it.

    During the OT, too.

Speaking of silver, rewatched ESB lately and noticed that the carbon Han gets frozen in is actually a silvery grey and not the brown it so often gets depicted as. It only looks brown in RotJ because of the dark and warm lighting in Jabba's palace.

    edit:
Have to add that the gold on C3PO looks fantastic. Great recipe you ave there

    No, he doesn’t :x

It blew my mind when someone pointed it out and I went back and watched the OT.

I’ve been watching them as far back as I can remember and I never saw it.

The secret is GW Retributor Gold .Good couple of layers for a solid coat, Agrax Earth watch, repanel, then highlighted (drybrushing) with a Retributor Gold/Mithril Silver mix and a leeeeeetle Mithril silver on its own for really raised areas.

Wait, what's the deal with the silver leg? I thought he always had it in TOS? Was it added in the special edition or something?
Is this some "Han shot first" thing that I'm only now becoming aware of?

See, that's what I thought? I always figured it was just a bit of cool asymmetrical detail, you know... because the whole starwars aesthetic was kinda junkyard and cobbled together. Why do people not think he had a silver leg?

Given that the image provided on his Wikipedia page doesn't feature a silver leg, I would wager there is some discrepancy on the matter, but I'm not much of a Star Wars nerd to know what it is.

  • honoverehonovere Registered User regular
There are a lot of scenes where the lighting makes his leg look rather golden. Same with the carbonite block.

Also it gets never mentioned. It's just a bit of background that can get the imagination going.

Compare to TFA where he holds his red arm directly into the camera and says hey have you noticed my red arm wink wink remember I had a silver leg, reference wink wink.

  • ArcticLancerArcticLancer Best served chilled. Registered User regular
Yeah, looking into it briefly this seems like a worse version of the Berenstain Bears alt-timelines thing. >_>
I guess you can find images of him without the silver leg because they removed it for the sequel trilogy. Simple enough.

Sticking play sand to bases with a glue/water mixture, what ratio am I supposed to be using here? 50/50 or just white glue with a bit of water added for thinning?

Most videos I've seen do a 50/50 split. Duncan does video on his website where he basically waters it down like paint, puts it on a pallete and adds water with the brush. Some other videos I've seen use a spray bottle with water and glue to seal the sand after it has dried as well but it isn't required.

I don't think you can really go too wrong with it. I've mostly done what Duncan does and it has turned out really well.

Now I'm thinking if I'm misremembering. Did he actually have a silver leg in the Clone Wars? Not from the beginning though at least, right? I know he has the silver leg in Rebels but I can't remember if tey actually went and had the replacement shown during the Clone Wars.

hmmmm, so it's there in RotS at least

I found a few GW sanctioned recipes that work your way through all the various watery shitty golds they have, but just retribute mixed directly with mithril silver does the job much better/easier

    These look amazing.

I will say, despite enjoying playing Legion (on TTS) and working through my painting my own models, the fact that a unit that features in basically every single republic and rebel list only comes with a terrain piece is peak FFG.

I was just thinking about how I needed to organize my paints again.

Started on the base for my Deceiver. I put sand on the actual model parts as well instead of just trying to match the look of the terrain part of the model with the sand. I think it worked.

For cleaning an airbrush (paasche talon) in an ultrasonic cleaner, do I need to strip out the air valve first? I assume there's a rubber seal inside that I don't want to damage.

I'd advise against putting airbrush components in an ultrasonic cleaner altogether. Anything you need to clean can be cleaned with alcohol/airbrush cleaner and a set of small nylon brushes.

And if you insist on using an ultrasonic cleaner absolutely under no circumstance put solvents in it.

Yeah, sounds like a good way to make a bomb in my kitchen

I've tried getting a deep clean in the main body with some nylon brushes, but I can still see some primer gunk that I can't seem to get rid of.
