Enjoying this one, they're almost like a continuation of Bathory's later-era Viking metal stuff (after Hammerheart) but probably better. They've got a few earlier albums too which are solid.
I'm just getting around to the new Hank von Hell album and it's also pretty solid, clearly a bit of a Ghost theatrical metal influence to this one, in fact some more metallic elements on a couple tracks that I'm not used to with him, but still got that smut-punk heart from his alma mater.
Overall sound is nice, they're sticking with what they found on Apex, which is good, because it was their best sounding album to date.
Sad to see the bassist go, but Brittney is still powerful as hell (I've spoken before on how she's on my Female metal Rushmore because she was overpowering the PA when was a good 4 rows from the rail) and I respect Scott for having perhaps the smallest/least pretentious drumkit in the power or prog metal scene, but still putting in great work.

Fit for an Autopsy may not be everyones cup of djent, but the guitarist is trending on social media for good samaritanism.
I wish there were a way to 'officially' use Bandcamp for manufacture-on-demand CDs, so the creators/labels got a cut. It just irks me that I can't get Vaisseau's Horrors Waiting in Line on the CD format, and this isn't the first time that's happened. I don't want a vinyl, I'd just have no use for it.
Biff Byford of Saxon has a new solo album out and it's great, if you like the last few decades of his mainstay's sound you'll love it. Ordered a CD immediately.
Alright, Palimpsest slaps. After several spins, there are no bad tracks. It's weird hearing Rody post-surgery and took some adjusting, especially when I first had heard The Canary and From the Sky, but man. Some of the best lyrics they've done, songs easily both catchy and complex. Granted I am one of those weird people that would put Kezia and Scurrilous at the bottom of my list, but this is a highlight of 2020.

Toehider is always hit or miss for me, but when I like his stuff, I really like it. I could go either way on this song, but the video's kind of fun: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fx3rYwCuB98
So as I am eagerly anticipating the next Hellripper album, I realized James also has a death rock/post-punk kinda thing going on too which is quite good.
And here's the new Voidceremony if you're seeking out some more of that 20 Buck Spin gruesome death metal madness. Not quite as fond of this one as the new Ulthar but it's cool.

What if you dig cult of Luna but don't get much out of yob?
Side question for the thread: anyone have any hypnotic and/or proggy and/or stoner and kind of relaxing metal recommendations similar to bands like elder?
Really digging their low key, "let's get stoned and listen to this music and zone out" vibe lately.

They have a few moments that reminded me of either, you might still like them anyway.

Their newer albums have a pretty unique sound, but a few you could try out are Spaceslug, Weedpecker, Om, Hallas and Earthless. Maybe even go more into psychedelic dream rock stuff like Suns of Thyme or Death Hawks.
For older...elder...Elder there's a much broader selection of the usual suspect stoner rock bands you could compare it to.

i'm going to echo this because apex is an album i play constantly from front-to-back and even though i initially dismissed these dudes for brain-numbingly dumbass fucking dipshit reasons, they've proven to be a magnificent group of musicians to listen to.
the riffs are good, the vocals are an underrated gold mine, and the theme has me drawn in even though i didn't necessarily give a shit about the story the first time around. it's one of those dumb moments where you didn't take the theme seriously when you first listened to it a few times, but you absolutely fell in love with everything else.
now these glorious fantasy geeks have another full story continuing the tale and, based on this one track*, i feel like i see what their trajectory was from the beginning: to weave a bittersweet yarn about the immortal that taps into a variety of themes, from conflicting loyalties and the brutally clashing interests of family to the more abstract-yet-visceral concepts of our fear of death and the never-ending cycle of revenge that drives us to operate in the extreme. afro samurai taught me a lot.
i want to listen to more of this and i'm sad that i can't fast-forward time.
(* i've only listened to one single and i think i know what i'm saying plz hire me for decibel magazine)

I've never really listened to them, but that song was nice. The video was something I could absolutely see Dethklok doing if they were a power metal band.
This song was certainly the catchiest I've heard from them. Puts them right in that niche with Triosphere, MindMaze, SevenSpires. Also little hints of Angra, Pagans Mind, bands I really love. I prefer this sound without the melodeath which I believe they used to feature a lot, but maybe I've got them mixed up with another band.

UTA's last album is just power metal cheese top to bottom. I guess there were hints of some darker metal here and there but really it's just fun stuff.

Bout all the darker Apex gets is 2 instances of death growls and some BM style trem passages, the rest is grade A queso.
Its definitely an album that makes time fly at work.

Yeah, I've been getting Dragonforce vibes from them.
But like, remove the instrumental wankery and the insufferableness and have instead actual musicality and good writing.

Loving the cover art for the new Varathron album, definitely going with the old Greek vibe, like this could have been an early cover for them or Necromantia.
Got some new I, Voidhanger promos, and the new Ars Magna Umbrae is pretty good, chaotic and atmospheric black metal.
I guess he's reissuing this Finnish album, too, which has a very cold, one-man, bedroom black metal feel with programmed drums, almost industrial feeling in some places; but the more I listened to it I started getting hypnotized.
The music and clean vocals on that Unlucky Morpheus jam are great, the generic melodeath snarls kind of butchered it for me though.
I can respect that. I find them mostly harmless and don't detract too much from the overall ambience. And I'll admit to being mesmerized by Jill's violin and thigh-highs.

Did I post this solo album from Moribond of Forteresse? Extremely beautiful stuff, lot of straightforward blasting black metal dowsed with graceful synthesizers to achieve peak airiness and rustic wonder. Nothing new, but I'm hooked. Also I always love ordering CDs from Canada because when I get the bill it's smaller than it looked

Bell Witch and Aerial Ruin - Stygian Boughs Volume 1

It’s two hours, which is both a commitment and a runtime fraught with the potential for missteps
But it’s totally magnetic
It leaves space so it’s not just two hours of tremolo picking and black metal shrieks
It ebbs, it flows, the production lives up to the name
Album of the year, or at least black metal album of the year from me
